This book shows you the whys and the why nots. It is a good quick desk reference for designing your own speakers. An argument based on the minimalistic jargon and discrete use of equations allows most anyone interested in starting from scratch or uncovering a previously unknown mistake in design to benefit from this book.
Mr. Weems has an excellent, if rather dry, book on designing and building speakers.
I'm in the process of building a set so I'm going through it again for specs and information.
I'll note that as a woodworker, I'm appalled by his construction methods -- they're not pretty, but will produce a speaker housing. The points at which we differ are essentially materials and methods, Mr. Weems favours (he writes with a shudder) medium density fibreboard and chip-board as housing materials, assembled with drywall screws. I favour Baltic birch plywood and hardwoods properly joined.
I'll note that a friend who's also an audiophile theorised that cast concrete would make the best speakers as it wouldn't resonate and the sound will be "pure". I couldn't care less about "pure" sound, I want sound that's pleasing to ME.
