This book we read after our trip to Brazil and Argentina. I filled in a lot of things we didn't see plus added some new information. Only 8% live in the countryside with the other 92% living in the cities. The tango is a popular dance in Argentina. It was started in the port of Buenos Aires by the Italian seaman. Pato is Argentina's national sport. The players ride horses and try to throw a ball with ropes on it into the other team's goal. Dulce de leche is a sweet carmel used in making desserts like cake and ice cream. Mate is like a tea that has caffeine. It is ground and put in a container and a straw with a ball at the end sucks up the juice produced when it has hot water poured onto it. Empanadas are a bread pastry filled with meat and ground vegetables. Argentines celebrate Carnival with widely attended parades. South American cowboys are called gauchos and they roam the Pampas of Argentina. Many of them are descended from the Basques of northern Spain. An interesting book.
