Frieda Fromm-Reichmann was a revolutionary in the treatment of schizophrenia, manic-depressive bipolar disorder, and patients with psychotic depression. Her innovation in treatment included her bold creativity, especially at a time, where these disorders may have been considered by many clinicians as untreatable mental illness. In this book, she describes her approach, experience, and treatment of psychotic patients, at the Chestnut Lodge Hospital in Maryland. Both personally and professionally, I was deeply touched, intrigued, and inspired in reading how she pioneered the treatment of patients who have had an unfortunate break with reality. As a clinician, artist, and To do this, she used many daring and effective methods such as entering into the figurative and symptomatic world of the patient, treating symptoms as metaphors and smoke screens for underlying conflict and guilt, always focusing on and presenting reality and, both beneath and combined with all these, employing broad empathy, flexibility, courage, and special understanding.

It's been years since I've read Frieda Fromm-Reichmann's books and papers, but this is one of two books that I still own. Her outlook on psychiatric illnesses might be somewhat dated, but her humanity, intelligence and common sense come through. Above all, she is a compassionate voice. And that never goes out of style.

She is the therapist of the girl in the fictionalized biographical novel I Never Promised You a Rose Garden by Hannah Green/Joanne Greenberg. Loved her in that book then went on to read her real writings.
