Waterness- na muthuswamy
ಮುರಕಮಿಯ 'ನಾರ್ವೇಜಿಯನ್ ವುಡ್' ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಯಕನಿಗೆ ಒಬ್ಬನ ಪರಿಚಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆತ ನಾಯಕ ಓದುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನೋಡಿ ಅವಜ್ಞೆಯಿಂದ ತಾನು ಮೂವತ್ತು ವರ್ಷದಷ್ಟು ಹಳತಾಗದ ಯಾವ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನೂ ಓದುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯವೆಂದರೆ ಸುದರ್ಶನ ದೇಸಾಯಿಯವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಬರವಣಿಗೆ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೆಯುವಾಗ ಅವರಿಗೂ ಕೂಡ ಬರೆದದ್ದನ್ನು ಕಾಪಿಟ್ಟು ಮತ್ತೆ ಓದು. ಆಗ ಸರಿಯಾದುದು ಮಾತ್ರ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಸಲಹೆ ಬಂದದ್ದರ ಕುರಿತು ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.(ಅವರು ಬಳಸುವ ಉಪಮೆ ಜಾಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟ ಮಾವು)
ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರೂ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಬರೆದು ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷ ಅದನ್ನು ಹಾಗೇ ಇಡುತ್ತಾರಂತೆ. ಮತ್ತೆ ವರ್ಷ ಕಳೆದು ಓದಿ ತಿದ್ದಿ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರಂತೆ.
ಇದೆಲ್ಲ ಯಾಕೆ ಈಗ ನೆನಪಿಗೆ ಬಂತು ಎಂದರೆ, ನಾ ಮುತ್ತುಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರು ಅರವತ್ತರ ದಶಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದ ಈ ಕಥೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅವರ ಕೊನೆಗಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಅವರಿಗೆ ನೆನಪೇ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲವಂತೆ ಅದರ ಕುರಿತು.
ಈ ಕಥೆಗಳೂ ಹಾಗೇ. ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಏನು? ಏನು ಹೇಳಹೊರಟಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದರೆ ನಿಮಗೆ ಗಾಳಿ ತುಂಬಿದ ಬಲೂನಿಂದ ಗಾಳಿ ಹೋದ ಮೇಲೆ ಉಳಿಯುವುದು ಏನು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಷ್ಟೇ!
ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಯಾಕೆ ಈ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತವೆ? ಯಾಕೆ ನಮಗೆ ಪಟ್ಟಣದಿಂದ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಯಾಗಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾದರೂ ಗ್ರಾಮಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಬದುಕು ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಎಂಬ ಹುಸಿ ಕನಸು ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಬೀಳುತ್ತದೆ?
ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ!
ಹೌದು.
ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗಿ ಬದುಕುವ ಬಯಕೆ.
ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಥೆಗಳೂ ಹಾಗೇ. ಎತ್ತಿನ ಬಂಡಿ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ವಾಹನವಾದ, ಪಟ್ಟಣದಿಂದ ಬಂದ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಸುದ್ದಿಯ ಮೂಲವಾಗುವ ಕಾಲದ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಇವು.
ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಘಟಿಸುವುದು ಏನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ.
ಹಸಿರು ತುಂಬಿದ ಗದ್ದೆಯ ಬದುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದು ಹೋಗುವಾಗ ಗಾಳಿ ಬೀಸುವಾಗ ಜೀವಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾಯೆನಿಸುತ್ತಲ್ಲ ಅದೇ ಭಾವ. ಎತ್ತಿನ ಬಂಡಿ ಸಾಗುವಾಗ ಎತ್ತುಗಳ ಕಾಲಿನ ಗೆಜ್ಜೆಯ ಕಿಣಿ ಕಿಣಿ ನಾದ, ಸಂಜೆಯ ಧೂಳು, ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಕಟ್ಟೆ, ಪಕ್ಕದ ಮನೆಯ ನೀರು ತುಂಬಿದ ಕೊಡಪಾನ ಹಿಡಿದು ಸಾಗುವ ಹೆಂಗಸರು, ಮನೆಯ ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಹೀಗೆ ನೆನಪಿಗೆ ಸಂದುಹೋದ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿತವಾಗಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ.
ಪೂಂಜೈ ಎಂಬ ತಮಿಳುನಾಡಿನ ಊರೊಂದು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕಥೆಗಳ ಸ್ಥಳ.
ಒಂದು ಕಥೆಯ ಹೆಸರೇ ' ಪೂಂಜೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಯ ಕಳೆಯುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ?' ಎಂಬುದಾಗಿದೆ.
ವಿಷಾದವೆಂದರೆ ಈಗ ಇವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳೂ ಸಿಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
ನರೇಂದ್ರ ಪೈ ಅವರ ಒಂದು ಬ್ಲಾಗ್ ಬರಹ ಓದಿ ಆಕಾಶ ಭೂಮಿ ಒಂದು ಮಾಡಿ ಇವರ ಎರಡು ಕಥಾಸಂಕಲನ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸುವ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ಜೀವ ಬಾಯಿಗೆ ಬಂತು.
ಹುಡುಕಾಟ ಮತ್ತು ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡಾಗಿನ ಖುಷಿ ಕಥೆಗಳ ಓದುವಾಗಿನ ಸಂತಸ ಇವಲ್ಲವೇ ಬದುಕಿನ ರುಚಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವುದು!

‘Neermai’ is a Tamil word that translates to ‘the nature of water’, ‘neer’ being water, and ‘-mai’ being propensity. Lakshmi Holmström translates this word, that is about the essential nature of water, and so much more than fluidity and moisture, and calls this translated collection of Na Muthuswamy’s ten Tamil short stories, ‘Waterness’.
Na Muthuswamy, a renowned playwright, director and founding member of the theatre group, Koothu-p-pattarai sets these stories in the land and routines of the agrarian Punjai, in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district. As I read the stories, I found Muthuswamy’s characters, even those who have moved to the city for better prospects, exhibit a certain Punjainess, rooted in their land and its people.
The themes, however, are universal. Grief, ennui, regret, curiosity, and even frenzy. Four of the stories stood out for me for different reasons.
In ‘His father’s school’, I was drawn to the little boy and his inexplicable grief that leads to a drastic emotional decision. One wonders about the trajectory the boy’s life could have taken, if his father was still alive.
In ‘The Honeycomb and the Snake’, the story of a man and his doomed relationship plays out as a scene from nature, with only one paragraph in the beginning to set the context.
In ‘Waterness’, a boy’s curiosity about the life of an old woman in his village sits alongside the lives of his mother, grandmother and other women in the village, whose destinies may have played out differently from the old woman’s, but are punctuated by similar routines, and daily preoccupations.
In Battlefield, Muthuswamy draws on his vast experience in performing arts, and depicts the scene of a koothu performance that will be performed alongside a commemorative statue for Duryodhana from the Mahabharata, who is deemed not as an enemy of the Pandavas, but an antagonist. This story features a real-life Koothu performer called Kannappa Thambiran whom Muthuswamy knew and worked with.
I’m still processing the depths in the stories I loved, and need to reread them, so this review is more like a wade in the shallows, rather than an immersive analysis.
