Tales from the Chicago White Sox Dugout: A Collection of the Greatest White Sox Stories Ever Told

Rate this book
The 1983 American League West champion Chicago White Sox will forever be remembered by their trademark “Winning Ugly.” The star of that colorful bunch was an unlikely hero, a twenty-five-year-old rookie from Northwest Indiana. Ron Kittle led the 1983 White Sox with 35 home runs, 100 RBIS, and Rookie of the Year honors. Now Kittle shares the adventures, struggles and triumphs of his incredible journey from the South Side to ’83 champion. A one-of-a-kind collection of stories, anecdotes, and humor, Tales from the Chicago White Sox Dugout opens a window into the life of more than just one Sox legend. Kittle shares insights about manager Tony La Russa, catcher Carlton Fisk, outfielder Harold Baines, Cy Young winner LaMarr Hoyt, and a host of others. Peppered with stories from on and off the field, Tales from the Chicago White Sox Dugout catalogs more than just stats and facts; Kittle shares inspiring stories of overcoming the physical pain he dealt with every day, as well as his dedication to raising funds for cancer research, adventures in the dugout, and so much more.

I am writing this book review based on witnessing the 1983 White Sox season first-hand when Ron Kittle exploded on the Chicago baseball scene. The stories in the book are humorous and give insight into what it was like behind the scenes during the 1983 season and beyond. You will learn about pranks and encounters with other major league ballplayers. I learned about the reasons behind his efforts to support charities and people who just need some acknowledgement or a smile. I have been a Ron Kittle fan since 1983. That was the year I witnessed one of his seven roof-top home runs from the stands. I met him at a Zayre store in 1983 when I was in high school and was impressed with his generosity. I have since met him on over a dozen occasions and I admire his friendliness and all he does for charity. The book is filled with many great stories as told from the one and only Ron Kittle. My wife gave me this autographed and personalized book for Christmas last year. I loved the book!

It's impossible not to like Ron Kittle. He always had a great attitude, could hit the ball a million miles, and signed autographs for everyone. But this book has identity problems. It's mostly a tribute to the 1983 Sox with a little biography and some assorted Kittle stories thrown in. It's hardly "a collection of the greatest White Sox stories ever told." There's not doubt that 1983 was a great team, but so was 2005. It all seems a little dated.
