The 1960s comic book adventures of The Phantom return in full, glorious color! Hermes Press has delighted collectors worldwide with it reissue of fully digitally restored archival collections of the Gold Key, King, and Charlton versions of The Ghost Who Walks. Featuring cover art by famed painter George Wilson with interior artwork by Bill Lignante and stories by Bill Harris, Volume 2 of the Gold Key years completes the run with issues #9-17.
The amazing thing about the Phantom is that it tries to provide really good explanations to jungle myths. The phantom tries to be a real life person, his character so believably designed. There is only one story in this collection where supernatural powers are seen, in the story of the Samari queen. But, that too was told by a jungle storyteller to children. The Phantom basically shows how these myths are created when words travel from mouth to mouth.
This was another good volume. One thing about Gold Key, their comics are always consistent. If you like one issue, you'll probably like more. If not, then there may not be much to change your mind. I myself like the Gold Key "House Style" art well enough. The stories are really not quite as campy as most 60s comics, but it's not always complex lots and characterization either. It's fun though, and sometimes that's enough.
