They Meant It for Evil

Rate this book
What do you do when the very people who are supposed to love and protect you are the ones who hurt you? Lucinda Pennington suffered unimaginable abuse as a child. Left by her mother at the hospital at three days old, Lucinda became a ward of the state, entering Maine's foster care system. While in foster care, she was physically, mentally, and sexually abused by the very people who were meant to care for her. She was sexually abused at the hands of her foster brother; starved, beaten, and locked up by her foster parents; and ignored by her social worker. Unfortunately, she suffered the same fate at each foster home thereafter and even after she was adopted. But through it all, there was one who never hurt God, her heavenly Father. He gave her hope. Now, as a grown woman, Lucinda's faith has helped her overcome her past, and in They Meant It for Evil, she encourages those who have suffered abuse to take a step toward healing. God can help you turn what was meant as evil in your life. Allow Him to use you and turn what was meant for evil into something good for Him. Show your abusers they did not ruin your life! Your abusers no longer have this power over you! Stand up and be proud you are a survivor!

Really Connected with My Past......

I was so moved by the life Lucinda faced as a child, as I am also a survivor of sexual abuse by a relative. It really was uplifting to see I am not the only one who referred to myself as "damaged goods" at one point in life. While I do not have as stringing relationship with God, I could feel her faith. I find myself struggling with the effects of my past, so to read another's coping strategy is hopeful. I also have a supportive husband that has helped me through my struggle of acceptance. But I also relate to the feelings of not belonging, avoiding conflicts and fear of hurting others. This book is a must read for anyone looking to strengthen relationship with God and oneself. It was an easy read that I couldn't put down, it just flowed so steady off the pages.

I had a hard time rating this book.
This isn't a book that will leave you. You will be affected by the it.
This book is not an easy read. It has left me thinking about kids in foster care and in other abusive situations. It is scary to think that the people that should have noticed what was happening didn't, or if they did they didn't get involved. No child should have to endure that kind of treatment.
My only issues with the story is that I would like to know how certain aspects of the story happened, how she and her adopted mother moved forward, and how things ended with her birth father. (Guess I am a bit nosy)

Very touching

This book tells a very touching story and shows how to overcome a troubled childhood with faith in God through Jesus. The stories are very compelling and though I wouldn't wish any abuse of any kind on anyone in some way it made me feel better to know that victims of abuse and sexual abuse are not alone. It was very refreshing to see a woman who turned to God through all of those trials and succeed at having a meaningful life and family through it all by loving Jesus. I recommend this book to everyone and have a new spring in my step after reading it knowing that with God anything is possible!

I found this book to be very poorly written. I feel bad for the author about what she went through. But I also found contradictions in things that she said, so I was very disappointed with the book overall.
