Beautifully written, exquisite Orientalism that will delight or offend, depending on the reader's tastes. Nerval indulges in exoticism, perhaps at the expense of truth and certainly at the expense of political correctness. Saturated in hashish fumes, the sweat of slave-girls, and Freemasonic mythology, Nerval's is an Orient of the mind and heart, a fever-dream of sorts. Read it for extended poetic reveries and provocative story-telling.

I've had this book for 40 years and have just re read it. Dreamy and daring for its time. He ended up hanging himself from a railing as I understand it, he was utterly overwhelmed and judging from the third story in the book (my favourite), The Queen of the Morning, it's no surprise. I remember reading somewhere that he had a major dream of an angel that landed in his back yard and he could never assimilate it. Who knows but I love his writing.

Mi s-a părut, de fapt, chiar o contopire a lumii Orientului și Occidentului și nu neapărat o prezentare distinctă. Desigur că există și unele diferențe, însă esența rămâne aceeași: “[…] De aceea străinul nu are să se teamă în această țară nici de fanatismul religiei, nici de intoleranța de rasă din celelalte părți ale Orientului; cucerirea arabă nu a putut transforma până într-atât caracterul locuitorilor; și dealtfel, nu rămâne el oare pământul antic și părintesc în care, prin lumea greacă și romană, Europa noastră își simte originile?”
Mi-a plăcut prezentarea “Femeilor din Cairo”, care nu sunt atât de diferite de femeile din Europa, ci sunt un raport dintre esență și aparență, sau chiar dintre vizibil și invizibil. Mai mult, cred că experiența lui Nerval demontează toate conceptele europene despre lumea, obiceiurile și faptele orientalilor.

The first third of the book was intriguing! But when de Nerval got into the hashish dreams, it lost its appeal for me.

Nerval va a zonzo nel Medio Oriente e ci racconta il suo viaggio che, a dire il vero, mi aspettavo con descrizioni piu’ ricche di immagini (immaginifico?).
Le descrizioni piu’ belle sono i travisamenti della realta’ dei luoghi del viaggio mediati attraverso la memoria di libri letti da Nerval su quei luoghi.
Rincorrendo Proust: vale piu’ la memoria o la realta’? Il reale diventa memoria l’istante successivo del momento vissuto e pare che non ci sia mai realta’!
Alcuni brani:
Da Fenimore Cooper a John Ford, il Far West incarna la moderna epopea del viaggio verso Occidente. Il suo momento forte, tutto iscritto nel saldo ottimismo puritano, e’ il tranquillo possesso di un bene: il mito del Far West, alla cui radice sta l’inquietudine della mancanza, il desiderio di cieli e cose nuove, e’ un mito borghese, appena corretto da vaghe reminiscenze cristiane. …

A partire da Chateaubriand il viaggio in Oriente e’ una sorta di pellegrinaggio laico che, almeno una volta nella vita, bisogna affrontare: in fondo si sa gia’ quello che riserva, niente di piu’ e niente di meno di quanto e’ gia’ ben custodito nello scaffale della biblioteca o in quello, polveroso e robusto, del cuore. Nerval's account of the 'orient' is told through such a dreamy haze of ideas that smokey become the boundaries between his recounting of fantastic tales and his own tale of a journey.
The world of story and Nerval's world may be very one and the same place, for his days spent in the Orient are full of owning slaves, smoking hashish and listening to storytellers for the length of entire days. Thus the richness of observation with which a travel biography would otherwise record the details of foreign locations is used instead to capture elaborate and magical worlds.
Quite a journey just to read this book.
The world of story and Nerval's world may be very one and the same place, for his days spent in the Orient are full of owning slaves, smoking hashish and listening to storytellers for the length of entire days. Thus the richness of observation with which a travel biography would otherwise record the details of foreign locations is used instead to capture elaborate and magical worlds.

Uneven, and obviously problematic by modern standards, but not without charm and wonder. The final third of my edition features an immensely psychedelic retelling of the story of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, purportedly from the mouth of a trained storyteller but clearly filtered through de Nerval's esoteric and baroque lens, presaging the overwhelming visionary experiences later documented in his masterpiece Aurélia.

While reading Gérard de Nerval’s Voyage en Orient, I was deeply impressed by his observations of peace and coexistence within the Ottoman territories. Nerval portrays, with clear yet powerful prose, how the Ottomans managed to keep diverse peoples united and harmonious. Through his account, my admiration for the Ottomans and Turkish culture grew even stronger.
As someone familiar with the region, I recognized in Nerval’s work a strong sense of the Turkish understanding of living in harmony with the “other.” This approach stands out especially when compared to Europe’s long and difficult struggle to accept diversity. Europe only began to embrace this acceptance after World War II, often through a lens of superiority and exclusion. In contrast, Turks, inheriting the legacy of the Seljuks and Ottomans, have successfully practiced coexistence for nearly a millennium.
This profound respect and understanding of pluralism and humanism among Turks deeply moved me, reaffirming how deeply rooted the cultural values I have admired all my life truly are.
As someone familiar with the region, I recognized in Nerval’s work a strong sense of the Turkish understanding of living in harmony with the “other.” This approach stands out especially when compared to Europe’s long and difficult struggle to accept diversity. J'ai débuté la lecture de voyage en Orient au mois de Juin 2024 et j'ai décider de l'arrêter en août. J'ai tout de même réussi à finir la deuxième partie donc "Les femmes du Caire". Mais mon Dieu j'ai cru jamais finir. Bon vous l'aurez compris cette lecture n'a pas été des plus simple pour ma part mais je ne l'ai pas pour autant détesté, loins de là. Mon soucis avec ce roman n'est ni l'écriture, ni l'histoire, ni les propos. J'ai adoré lire du point de vu d'un orientaliste français du 19e siècle qui découvre de nouvelles cultures. Le seul et le gros défaut du livre est sa lenteur. Il y a tellement de longueur et le roman est si dense que je n'arrivai pas à profiter malgré l'écriture qui merveilleuse. Je pense que c'est la première fois que j'arrête la lecture d'un livre malgré sa qualité littéraire. Je suis tout de même heureux d'avoir pu découvrir Nerval et réussi à lire les deux premières parties.
