I was not sure I would like this book, not being a big fan of fantasy novels, but I loved it. It has something for everybody action, romance, intrigue and clever plots that unravel at a perfect pace. I think this book has the same type of appeal that pulled readers into other well loved stories such as Buffy, Harry Potter, Twilight and even Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: that is the lead characters are all ordinary, somehow different, underdogs who are thrown into fantastic worlds where they are special or 'chosen'. This book is also written in such a way that the reader truly believes the story and perhaps this could happen to any of us. I was sad when I finished this book. I hope there is more.
I was very skeptical about this book. And not sure if it would be something I would enjoy given the religious content. But never did i feel as though the book was being pretentious or "preachy" about faith, religion and belief in God. in fact I found myself really connecting with the main character Aaliya and her search for religious clarity and purpose. The book was fast paced and interesting with each chapter developing the story in broader and more exciting ways. The characters were easy to relate to and their struggles, although based in a supernatural world, were true to the every day struggles we all face. A book like this one is hard to put down because I was constantly wanting to know what was going to happen next, which I loved about it!
I bought this book from the author at Supanova in Brisbane, mainly to support a local author. I really did enjoy this. It was a touch tedious in the beginning and it's a bit long, but the story is solid. I look forward to reading the next in the series :)
I wouldn't normally read this kind of book but I took a chance and loved it. I was surprised to hear that this was the Author's first book. Amazing stuff I will be buying the second book very soon.
What a brilliant start to this trilogy! An unexpected delight with twists and turns that keep you on your toes - and most importantly, keep you reading.
Careful what you wish for: Our heroine in this one is dreading the beginning of another boring, uneventful year. Oops! Wonderful message in a smart, fearful yet fun fantasy adventure. Great characters with just the right amount of attitude are brought to life for us in a very well told story.
