Along the way, will they find each other-or will it cost them their lives before they can unravel the mystery of generations past?
I would have totally given this book a 5-star rating if it weren't for the abrupt ending!! It was a fantastic read and I really enjoyed learning about the civil war. The main characters were well developed and kept me interested to see what would happen next. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but I felt that the ending was too abrupt. It went from the end of one crucial and nail-biting scene to the epilogue. I just wanted more to the story than a few sentences summarizing how everything happened at the end. Still a great book, and I am looking forward to the next in the series!!
Although I have a rather large stack of library books (32) to read, I kept hearing Tyler and Amber calling to me and I decided to skip the library books and go for a familiar favorite. This is the kind of book that sucks you in right from the start. Under normal circumstances Amber and Tyler would probably never meet. They are both workaholics and it takes a little time travel for them to finally get together. I like the struggles Amber has to go through as a doctor. I can only imagine how awful it would be to be thrown into the horrible medical conditions of the Civil War; it would probably drive me crazy. Amber handles it well and does the best she can to save and teach those around her. Tyler is a natural leader, the troops are drawn to him and he commands their respect. Although Tyler has had a hard past this experience is able to help him get closure and ultimately peace. I like the relationship between Amber and Tyler; it was fun to glimpse a part of their story. Great book, well researched and very entertaining.
This is the first book in a set that can be read separately but I like to read things in order. I really like this, it's one of my favorite I return to when I just need a sweet love story.
I just ordered this one and it came in today. I'm over a third of the way through already. Good read so far! ---
I can't believe how fast this one was to read. It isn't too long, but it was a good book! I just love time-travel books, especially those that don't get to technical or specific about all the ramifications of the time travel. I can't help but be surprised about the quality and quantity of LDS fiction these days. I knew things had changed from when I was a teenager when I stumbled upon Betsy Brannon Green. Nancy Campbell Allen is another great LDS author. I've already ordered the next book along these lines and I look forward to getting it delivered.
It was an enjoyable book. It had a nice pace. There were aspects of it that were very unrealistic (everyone accepts them and Tyler get promoted after a week). Also, while understand that when people meet in high tension times, the emotional bond can be stronger, I still thought they came to love each other too soon. I also didn't realize how religious this book was. I read and enjoyed the book, but I felt almost blindsided, especially toward the end when it progressed from a few mentions about her faith, to mentioning and explaining it every other page.
It was okay. Most of the books I’ve been reading lately have spent much more time fleshing out the characters. I felt that, while the main characters referred to why they were falling for each other in their thoughts, it wasn’t really backed up by the scenes that were developed. It all wrapped up way too easily in the end. And, one of my biggest pet peeves... the author left out what should have been the concluding scene of the book, and just jumped ahead in time to show that everything was now just hunky-dory.
I gave this book four stars because it actually got an emotional response from me. I admit I cried twice. I'm not normally one to enjoy books with anything that couldn't really happen (like time travel), but I enjoyed this one. Great love story! Plus, perfect length -- quick read.
This novel was pretty good. It had a very intriguing concept, lots of historical background, the addressment of sexism and other bigotry, likable characters, and little inclusions of many Latter-day Saint things, like a priesthood blessing, family history, the scriptures, and Amber's patriarchal blessing. There is also some humour --- I especially liked what I found toward the end of Chapter 18! --- and I wouldn't know if the author had read the play Trifles before writing this novel, but seriously, Amber's mention of the word "trifles" while talking to the icky general toward the start of Chapter 12 I was just like, "Uh-huh...!" (: I also have to say that I agree with Tyler about those romance novels. That may be just because I have very strong opinions on what comprises a romance novel versus a smutty one, though! And thankfully, this book in particular I WOULD call a romance novel, and it was done well. Tyler and Amber seem to have a bit of a Much Ado About Nothing relationship, which can be fun and bantering to read about.
Tyler's true change in character was kind of fast, however, and sometimes, I felt like his understandable protectiveness, especially from his trauma, did bleed into him being a little sexist. I also am just not personally used to everyone being so blunt to the point of being rude to one another and still liking one another, haha (: I really like fiery heroines like Amber, her Hermione-ness included, but I'll admit that many characters in this book's "tempers," as they put it, were a bit surprising to me!
For the most part, all in all, I enjoyed this novel and found it to be an easy and compelling read. For fans of Latter-day Saint fiction, time-travel romances, and/or historical feminism, this one's a great place to start!
This was a fun quick read. I like how the author didn't try to explain any science or more explanation about the time travel, it was just, it happened and lets move on. It really wasn't that deep of book anyway. It dabbled a little in historical facts, but compared to the whole civil war, really not much. I enjoyed the budding romance amidst tragedy. It's always interesting to learn more a little bit more about the civil war. I liked the characters.
I loved this book. ( 4 1/2 stars!) It had a unique plot, was interesting (taking place during the civil war) and was also funny and sweet. However, it ended so fast. There was an epilogue, but I felt like there definitely could have been a little more to the ending before the epilogue. Overall it was a great book!
I really enjoyed this book. The only thing I struggled with is a few of the things in the book didn't make sense. Time travel books can be hard to be plausible but other than the one item it was well written.
I am not usually a fan of time travel books but I will admit that Nancy was able to weave a sweet story that included many surprises at the end where she very neatly wrapped everything together in a heart-warming and well done love story that is to be appreciated!
Really like this author. I really like this story and the two main characters. Auther did a good job weaving the story together. Loved her gospel touches, without going overboard.
I loved it!!! The adventure mixed with falling in love in such harsh times was breathtaking. I loved the fact that Tyler was so protective made me like him even more. And the ending, loved it!
Everything in this book seemed forced. The plot line, the love story, the ending. Written well enough that I plodded my way through it but merely for the sake of finishing it and not much else.
A twist on a love story mixed with history as well as some family history. Reminded me of the movie "Somewhere In Time" A quick read. No bad language or any sex implied! Really enjoyed it!
time travel book. clean romance. Amber and Tyler both get a strange injury and find themselves transported back in time to the civil war. while back in time they try to stay together so they can protect each other. they both meet ancestors of course. She is a Doctor manages to save a few peoples lives by just cleaning better.
