I lived from 1878-1950. I was from the United States, and am in the Americas category. Probably best known for the poem “The Master’s Hand” written in 1921, Myra Brooks Welch was born in the late 19th Century in America. Thanks to one of our Oldpoetry readers we believe she was born in Illinois 1878, daughter of John Brooks, and she married Otis Welch. She was a resident of La Verne, California. As a youngster her special joy was playing the organ but this was denied her in later life as she suffered badly from arthritis and spent much of her time in a wheelchair. She wrote with an inverted pencil in each of her gnarled hands and would pick out the words on a type writer. She said that the joy of her writing outweighed the pain of her efforts. She was known as “The poet with the singing soul”
I have long love the poem The Touch of the Master's Hand. I've read it many times and have even seen a short movie adaptation. I jumped when I had the chance to review this illustrated picture book version of the classic poem.
I loved this book. Beautiful pictures bring the poem to life. This picture book does not disappoint. It teaches a great lesson and I'm excited to share this story with my children.
The first time i came across with "The Touch of the Master's Hand" was through a short movie shown in my class. It remained in me. It is a message of an assurance of God's love too special to ignore.
Really cute book. I really didn't care for the drawings. Wish it was more life like. Other than that the story is great and touching. I must have for my library.
Absolutely gorgeously illustrated with a tale I grew up with, it is touching the tale of the old violin that’s worth grew a thousand times over because of the touch of the master’s hand.
I have known this beautiful and inspiring story for MANY years, but I did not know there was this book with amazing illustrations. Everyone will want a copy of this book--one for himself/herself AND copies for others. It would be a great Christmas preent.
This is the first time I have read this poem and I wish I had read it sooner! What a beautifully written reminder about how our Lord Jesus can change those who put their trust in Him.
ok so yes I do play the violin. So this book holds double meaning for me. Spiritually it means that with help from the lord, friends, parents, and teachers we can be shaped into wonderful people. And musically it means that the value of an instrument, a musical piece, peoples feelings about classical music can change "by the touch of a master's hand". And besides I memorized this poem and it made my violin teacher in VA cry!
Beautiful and inspiring. I love the illustrations in this book. Greg Newbold does colorful, vibrant, rich work. I had the privilege of watching this book come together, peering over the art directors shoulder at each illustration as they were developed. Definitely one for the home library. Oh, and the classic story is good, too!
I actually know this story from a song by a group called Afterglow. I am NOT an Afterglow fan, I dislike their wobbling vibrato voices, but I have always liked the song based on this poem. I actually didn't know it was a poem, I thought the Artist had adapted, So I liked..the pictures are great, and aren't we all grateful for a touch of the master's hand!!
