L’EPICO ULTIMO NUMERO.
Hiromu Arakawa (author: 荒川弘) is a Japanese manga artist, best known for Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no renkinjutsushi). Her real name is Hiromi Arakawa
Arakawa was born and raised on a dairy farm in Hokkaidō. She thought of being a manga artist since she was little. After graduating high school, she took oil painting classes while working on her family's farm. During that time, she also created dōjinshi manga with her friends and drew yonkoma for a magazine. After eight years she moved to Tōkyō and started out as assistant writer for Hiroyuki Etō. Her debut as manga artist is in 1999 with STRAY DOG. In 2001 she started working on her famous and award winning series Fullmetal Alchemist, that soon gets a successful anime adaptation. Other works include Silver Spoon (銀の匙 Silver Spoon, Gin no saji Silver Spoon).
I have a weakness for finales where everyone comes together for the final showdown. I love how hopeful and strong this ending is. I think FMA is a work of art, an incredible piece of story telling and I will always enjoy coming back to it.
Aún sabiendo cómo iba a acabar, me he emocionado igual.
A lesson without pain is meaningless, because gaining anything worthwhile requires sacrifice. But if you can overcome that pain and achieve your goal, you can achieve a fullmetal heart and that is irreplaceable.
It's been a long time that a book has managed to get me to fully breakdown in a full-body sob. But leave it to Fullmetal Alchemist to do that very thing. How do I put into words what this series means to me? As a kid, I liked it for the artistry of it and because Edward made me laugh, but now as an adult, there is just layers upon layers of meaning behind every character. How do you choose a favourite character when everyone is so rich and multi-layered? Even the "villains" of the series are given facets to their motivations and choices, and they are humanized by them.
This is a series that perfectly balances character and plot. There is a richness to the characters, their flaws sparkle for all to see, but they persevere, they don't give up, even if they are bloody and broken. There is an intricacy to the story that Arawaka painstakingly prepares from the very beginning. She is a master story teller. Being a female author/illustrator in a predominately male genre in the manga industry, and telling a story that is unflinching in its themes on anti-war, anti-racism and equity for all human lives, I hold the utmost respect for her. It's gratifying to me that this continues to be one of the top-ranking series, even decades after it's release. There is so much heart in this story. I was gut-punched again and again by the beauty of humanity and the resilience and compassion that permeates the entirety of this series. I literally cannot stop thinking about Doctor Knox when he says, If I'm a doctor who's meant to save lives, then why am I here killing people instead? The Ishvalan war is just a whole bucket of emotions that I can't unpack right now.
Literally no character is forgotten or without it's purpose in the story. Every person that the Elric brothers meet come back in their lives again, aiding them and reminding them how not alone they are or reminding them of their purpose, instilling in them the hope and strength they need to continue. The love those brothers have for each other...never mind, I'm crying again...I think you get where I'm going with all of this
This series is so familiar to me, it's one of the anime series (actually the only) that I watch again and again and find myself completely swallowed into the story. However, being able to read it was an especially beautiful experience and I will forever treasure and love for a long, long time. But I really need a nap now because I've been reading these books nonstop. And water. I've been crying way too much and Olivier Armstrong has only made my constitution weak.
Also on a lighter note, my brothers are also huge fans of this series and one of them named their dog Winry, and so now the name Winry has kind of been ruined for me (in a good way) because not only do I think of Winry Rockbell but I also have a big fluffy black dog that pops up in my head. Thanks big brother.
This will serve a bit more as a review of the whole series since idk how you even rate volume per volume. Also doing this here cause this is for the physical volumes and idk they feel like books to me.
I love this series. I was worried it wouldn't hold up to whatever my young brain took from it, but I still love it. I feel it has its silly moments and clichés, but overall the story, characters, and concepts are incredible. You have a deeply political and focused story here, along with such a cool portrayal of humanity and mortality. Also coming up with the sci fi concepts used here is so bizarre, I don't know how she did it.
Also the art is just gorgeous. Its nothing grandiose or super detailed, but just serves the story perfectly.
I loved this series! Especially towards the end where things really all started to click and the characters coming to realize their true purpose. I would highly recommend this read. I would say more but I can’t do it justice so instead Ill leave you with a quote that really resonated with me from the end of the book, “A lesson without pain is meaningless because gaining anything worthwhile requires sacrifice”
i don’t think that i have words for this manga, and if i did it would’ve felt like they weren’t enough. i’m always in awe of this story, and reading the last two very short stories that i’ve never read before made it all come full circle (and im not gonna lie i cried like i always do)
10/10, can’t wait to reread and rewatch this again.
