Dignity for All is a pretty quick read at only about 100 pages that gives teachers and future educators some tips for making their classrooms more inclusive to LGBTQ+ students. There were some decent words of advice in this book, and of course I loved the premise, but overall, I was kind of disappointed!
For one, this book is extremely outdated. It was written three years before the Obergefell decision so most of the content was common sense to me. The book was also hyper-focused on gay men in particular and the trans community was completely omitted! If we are to gain acceptance in society then that means ALL members of the community must be included in our activism, not just the ones most palettable to the conservative eye.
While the author had good intentions with this book, it needs some major updating to truly push for equality in the classroom.
A good overview of issues faced by students who identify as LGBTQ, as well as suggestions for how to create communities that better support them; however, the 2012 copyright means it is time for an updated edition. This was a required text for a class I took or I would have looked for something more recent.
While some of the resources and strategies are helpful for school based staff, over all this book is outdated and needs a serious facelift. This was a required book for a class i am taking, and it is very very basic, there are much better resources out there.
The harassment and discrimination of LGBT students in the educational setting and action steps to implement positive change in the school's culture toward LGBT students, such as Gay/Straight Alliances, school board policies and codes of conduct, and bullying policies to be taken by the institution, are discussed. Very easy read and well indexed.
