From beyond the galaxy. From beyond human understanding. They came with one mission.
To kill us all.
Some call them aliens. Others call them gods. Their tentacles grip worlds. Their malice destroys civilizations. They've crushed a million planets.
And now they crave Earth.
Marco and Addy, veterans of the Alien Wars, are retired. They fought for many years. They saved Earth many times. Now they're raising their children in a peaceful forest. They've earned this peace.
But Earth needs them. More than ever.
Because a war is coming. A war unlike any before. A war that can devour our very galaxy.
The enemy is almost here.
From the shadows of despair, heroes will rise. Heroes will sound the cry of our world, the prayer of our people. "Hear, O Earth! We will live!"

Marco and Addy are adjusting to their middle-aged selves. The children are young adults. But with a lot of childish behavior friends from time to time. They are the Emery children, after all! The oldest, Terri, 18 and legally an adult, was the product of a lonely night in the company of a warm body to take away the pain of war for a brief instant. It didn't work, but Marco was not displeased with the outcome. Terri would be joining the Human Defense Force in a few days, with all the other 18 year olds on Earth. Marco and Addy's twin, Sam and Roza, are 10 year old versions of Marco and Addy, and they are the apples of Marco's eye. And Einav and Noah added their ten year old son Carl into the mix, mayhem was sure to follow!
But the Methuselah treatment changed everything! Noah developed the treatment and gave the first doses to Marco, Addy, Einav and himself. In a short time, everything changed. Now their bodies were youthful in appearance and energy! They were no longer middle-aged, now they were young and would stay that way for a few hundred years, maybe. But they quickly learned that the wonderful treatment had a terrible side effect - there was a fifty-fifty chance that they would die, age and die instead of being young again. 50/50 odds were pretty good, right? For three of them, it was a wonderful thing. The other aged and died in front of their eyes! They couldn't keep the drug a secret, I mean we're talking Marco and Addy - heroes of the many wars Earth had faced! They were young again! Now everyone wanted the drug and it was soon synthesized. The older the person, the worse the odds became and people were aging to death in front of the world, but the lucky few didn't care! The world went crazy.
Then came the Voidgazers! From the farthest end of the galaxy, they stared into the Void beyond the light and waited. Their god was coming. Foretold and awaited, the Hyds are coming! Terrible, many tentacled monsters ranging from small moon-sized monsters to behemoths that could swallow planets, they were crossing the Void and would arrive at the edge of the galaxy in a short time - only a little more than 100 years from now! The Voidgazers wanted the Methuselah treatment so they could live to see their gods arrive! And nothing could stand in their way. Except maybe Addy and Marco!
Our favorite heroes re-emerge from obscurity and stand ready to defend humanity once again! This long-awaited tale brings our favorite things together, like hot dogs on a rake, some things are just meant to be! This is a great read!
Full disclosure: I received a free advance copy of this book in return for a promise to review it on Amazon (the book will be released Sep 5)
My first Daniel Arenson novel and I have mixed reactions. The story and the characters are a lot of fun - but not necessarily believable. That's not automatically a problem if you are looking for a fun escape into a fast-moving story that literally covers the full expanse of the galaxy and covers decades of human colonization of it.
For those that enjoy pitched military battles, as well as heroic individual fights and escapes, there is plenty here - all wrapped around a love for one's companion and family.
The characters are a little bit exaggerated and the science is lacking - I should say there is lots of science, it's just not very realistic. For many readers that won't be an issue - it wouldn't have been for me when I was younger.
After the war with Lalani Tala disappeared for some time. Where did she go? Also, what happened to McIntosh and the rest of the starlings? Did they just magically blend into the population? You made these people stand out and then just poof they were gone. I enjoyed the continuing story, but sometimes you rehash things that are overly repetitious and forget about the characters you brought to the forefront.
I like some good sci fi and this was it! The biggest way to unify Earth is to have an outside force threaten us. The characters were fun; my favorite was Addy. She was quirky, but had more depth than I had at first thought. The best line was "You are the pushiest missionaries I have ever met!" when she and her husband were attacked by cult members. Too funny
Great read like mint tendons previous books you don’t want to put it down lots of twists and turns lots of action can’t wait to see Marco Enav and Addys next chapter
This is a thoroughly great book with characters that many have become very attached to and which those new to this saga will quickly feel the same. It is quirky, hilarious, melancholy and uplifting all along the way.
I found the story to be great. The storyline is excellent and the characters are well developed. The story was filled with action, suspense, intrigue and drama throughout the story.
The story continues with Enaiv, Marco and Addy. They fight conquer and have families. Great story once again from Daniel Arenson. This is the first book and now book number 2.
An exciting and thrilling read. I enjoy ready space-based books, though I would never want to venture there myself. I plan on reading the rest of this series, if possible, but my TBR pile is ever growing.
Human sacrifice. Implausible aliens. A 45 year old Israeli woman, former commander of Earth's armies, now president of the world and its colonies. A psychotic heroine...
I must confess I haven't read the other Earthrise books yet but this one makes me want to. Loved the "Canadianisms" in the book especially the Maple Leafs digs. The book was a good mix of humour, suspense and action. Very enjoyable read.
