Tucked quietly away in a wooden box, of the buried family secret, no one talks. May 9, 1978 – Anger seethed from every inch of her body. I knew better to get in her way, yet I wanted to protect Sissy, for I knew that she would be the target of Mother’s rage. It was always directed at one of us, but usually Sissy. My dad was no longer around to protect us, so it was me who had to step in, even though it was I who usually ended up getting the worst end of Mother’s wrath. And I could just tell that today was going to be one of those days. I just didn’t know how an eight-year-old was supposed to protect not only himself, but his three-year-old sister against a woman who, even though she was our mother, hated us with every inch of her body.
