THE FAMED EVANGELICAL WRITER CRITIQUES CALVINISM

Dave Hunt operates (with T.A. McMahon) an "anti-cult"/apologetics ministry, "The Berean Call." He has written/cowritten many other books, such as 'The Seduction of Christianity: Spiritual Discernment in the Last Days,' 'Beyond Seduction: A Return to Biblical Christianity,' etc.

He wrote in the "A Brief Word" introduction to this 2002 book, "multitudes of sincere, Bible-believing Christians ... (t)hinking that the only choice is between Calvinism with its doctrine of eternal security and Arminianism with its falling away, and confident that salvation cannot be lost... consider themselves to be Calvinists... It is our prayer that the following pages will enable readers to examine more carefully the vital issues involved..."

Hunt states that "It is neither stated in Scripture nor does it follow logically that anyone, as a result of his depravity... is thereby unable to believe the glad tidings of the gospel and receive Christ as his Savior." (Pg. 96) He argues that for man to be a morally accountable being, he must have a free will. (Pg. 184)

He asks, "Why must God's infinite mercy be limited to a select few?" (Pg. 111, pg. 189) Noting that Calvinists admit that God could save ALL---yet condemns billions for His "good pleasure"---Hunt adds, "Aghast at such doctrine, one can only repeat in astonishment the title of this book: What Love Is This?" (Pg. 224)

Hunt explains that "Election/predestination is always explained in the Bible as resulting from God's foreknowledge." (Pg. 197) He summarizes his own position, "knowing in advance who would believe the gospel, God made certain that those individuals heard the gospel, and He predestined them to partake of the many blessings He planned to bestow on the redeemed throughout eternity." (Pg. 229)

While Hunt's arguments aren't likely to convince many Calvinists (see his debate with James White in Debating Calvinism: Five Points, Two Views), they are a forceful presentation of the non-Calvinist position.
