I really liked this read. There were a couple of things that made me go "hmm". While there's nothing unusual about an eight year-old little girl having an imaginary friend, especially when eight year old Jane has the most self-absorbed mother and the most disinterested father. An imaginary friend who is a good looking thirty-five-ish year old man...that's a bit of a twist. And, I wasn't entirely sure what Michael was. He was visible only to Jane, unseen by everyone else. Was he a ghost? An angel?
Anyway, as the story goes, Michael says goodbye forever on Jane's ninth birthday because, that's what happens with imaginary friends. Jane is supposed to forget all about him after he vanishes but, that isn't the case here. He remains forever in her thoughts. And she, in his.
Fast forward twenty-three years in the future. Jane is thirty-two, working for her mother and has somehow not turned into a vacuous b-word despite her environment and remained sweet and kind. And Michael, while still mid-thirties, is no longer invisible to everybody else. He eats real food, goes out with friends, is seen by the general public, yet he still has his job as an imaginary friend. Another hmmm.
Then one day, as fate would have it, they meet. Face to face. Both tangible and real. Is Michael back in Jane's life to guide her as an adult or is this the case of soulmates finally reconnecting at the right time.
All in all an enjoyable, light. And I have to make note of the romantic, wintery cover art scene.
No disrespect but can we all talk about how perverted this backstory is? A child, a 8 years olds imaginary best friend ends up having a relationship with the adult after seeing her again after decades? Loved the love between them but still was kinda gross.

This book gave me major nostalgia because I watched the movie when I was a kid. I thought it added depth to the characters and really brought me into the shoes of the FMC. I thought the ending was a bit rushed compared to the pacing of the rest of the book, but that is my only complaint. I love a wholesome love story where the MMC is perfect and comforting and emotionally intelligent.
Ok let’s get into this. 2 stars in whole. 1 star because it reads extremely well and quickly. Your not questioning what’s going on. And the second star because I don’t read romance often and it had a good ending. So I think that constitutes 2 stars in total.
Now, as a whole I wish I never read this book. The first half was intriguing and had me wondering what was going to happen next- usually impressive for romance. I think that it really delved into how women can feel in different situations. Especially the chapter where Jane finally felt comfortable in her slim pink dress going to the MET with her jerk boyfriend. The description of her routine, and her playful attitude coming out in her sarcastic thoughts. The first few chapters when she was 8 tugged at the heart strings and hooks you in.
However, after the first half it all goes downhill. Where as the first half is a page turner, I forgot about the book over and over as soon as Jane and Micheal reunited. Jane has zero personality throughout the entire book. She’s got the complete “oh poor me” attitude and she is not well rounded as a character. She lacks all possible intelligence and briefly mentions past happenings that should certainly be expanded on. The authors consistently take the easy way out of writing conversation by Jane quickly explaining what happens next. Where is her father? Why does she never speak with him? This book is over the course of probably a year and she has a best friend that she has ONE phone call with? She mentions how much she loves her dad as a child and then he’s mentioned once throughout the rest of the book. She mentions by name one of her stepfathers and how close she was with him. Never mentions him again and we are expected to remember who he is by name when he is mentioned in the last chapter. Her best friend doesn’t come to Vivienne’s funeral and she should have.
Also, money? We are given small insight into Viviennes character and out of all of these characters, I believe she had the most potential. She’s rich but Jane is the one spending ALL the time completely randomly. Don’t get me started on the 13,000 dollar ring that makes no sense. No one ever even notices the ring and it was just filler content. Why didn’t Micheal mention that she was wearing a ring as soon as he saw her again? And the girl, what’s her face, that Micheal took out to st Regis, she sees Jane and just politely walks away even though she has a right to be awkward?
Micheal CARRIED this story and even he’s pointless. He’s stop dreamy, too pointless, too unrealistic. He’s an imaginary friend supposedly become human and how they tried to make the reader understand that he was human really irked me. When he cuts himself shaving it is completely random and had so much possibility. He cuts himself but he still has other worldly powers. It’s just weird. He remembers only his most recent assignments but he remembers every moment of Jane? And her family? Weird.
This story had so much potential. And don’t get me started on Micheal’s random medical issue in the end. Or Viviennes. She’s some sort of mega millionaire and yet she… what? Can’t recognize that she’s sick? It’s so random. The heartfelt conversation in the end with her mother was essential and sweet but we did not see enough of their bond and instead we were consistently swept away on fairytale dates with Micheal and Jane that weren’t even well written.
Then when Micheal has some random, completely unnecessary medical issue, just quickly inserted because the book should have just ended right after Vivienne’s funeral, they realize what did not need answered for the reader already. Micheal has a heart. Uh… duh? We know? Thats supposed to be the "Ohhh" moment that makes everything click into place? He mentions over and over the way that Jane makes his heart beat faster. That entire ordeal was so pointless. Blythe coming in and confirming with Jane just how weird this is is unnecessary. How did the friends even find out he was in the hospital? Oh wait, they probably just KNOW because that’s how these authors cheat the readers out of a solid explanation.
This was such a let down of a book. I felt like I was reading a romance watt pad story written by a talented 15 year old.
I can agree on how this was such a fantastic plot line. It’s creative and original enough that it’s eye catching. But it leaves you in a swirl of nothingness. Answers nothing logical, and then because the author knows they’re letting people down, they just throw in medical issues. It sounds like there was no predetermined plan.
Oh yeah, Jane was producing a movie? There were no deadlines or things she was missing when she just ran off to Nantucket? And Micheal ended up playing Micheal in the end? How did the production of Thank Heaven even go?
It’s all just so random. They were trying to do so much in such little space when they had enough content just staring right at them that needed expounded on.
I should have given 1 star.

More thoughts to come later, but for now I’m just gonna let my little heart feel warm and fuzzy 🥹😭♥️
*more thoughts later have made an appearance*
This book isn’t deep, but it has some depth. Sure, things aren’t explained, really. But, this book was everything an early 2000’s romance book would ever need. This gave me all the nostalgia I needed and now I want to watch the movie.
Did everything need an answer? No. Did everything need to make sense? Also, no. I just loved what this book brought which was feel good romance with some magical realism in it 🥹
It didn’t need to blow me away, I enjoyed every second I read it and that’s all the matters right now
One of my favorite books of all time. I would be over the moon if they ever turned this book into a movie! I remember reading it and thinking, “this NEEDS to be a movie”! The imagery that I had while reading this was out of this world. The way that it is written, you can really get such a good picture of the scenery, the characters, and the spirit of New York City! UGH, SO GOOD!!
As usual I wish that I could give half stars to bump this up a bit more but I'm not sure I would give it a 4. It was a light, quick easy read. I found it enjoyable.
