Born into poverty and hardship, Ruby Skinner's decision to approach the unscrupulous East End villain, Donald McCoy, for help, ends in disaster. In a desperate bid to move her ailing mother to the fresh air of the countryside, she realises that she has made a huge mistake, which will shape the rest of her life. Robert Thornton, a wealthy business man, also had the misfortune of suffering from the under hand dealings with McCoy, and when curiosity forces him to pursue Ruby Skinner, the barriers which divide the social classes of the 19th century are put to test by the power of love. The thoroughly spoilt Clarissa Parker who has had her eyes set on Robert Thornton, is not prepared to give him up easily, and with her malicious plans, sets out to destroy Ruby and Robert's happiness.

Wow! This book was so involved and intriguing, I was torn between wanting to find out what happened and not wanting to read about any more despair. All the characters are full of life, most good and kind hearted but others cruel, devious and inhumane.
Our main character Ruby, suffers so much and I just wanted her to get a break. I almost stopped listening because she seemed to go from one tragedy to the next, but I'm so glad I persevered.
Ruby is a battler and her resilience is so admirable - definitely the strongest heroine I have read about for some time. Although I found the book harrowing at times, I felt I had to keep reading for her sake.
Really well written By Lily Adam and well read on this audio book. Highly recommend.
