Ô pays, mon beau peuple !

Rate this book

This is a novel set in the Casamance (the part of Sénegal south of the Gambia) in approximately 1948 to 1950, between the end of World War II and the beginning of the Liberation struggle. The hero, Faye Oumar, returns from France where he had taken part in the war, with a white wife, Isabelle, and a new outlook on life. The book follows his struggle to make a living, his relationship to his parents, and his clashes with the white merchants and authorities. Ousmane deals with questions of race and identity, and with the economic and social evils of French colonialism. While it was evident from the beginning that this was not a novel which could have any sort of personal "happy ending" for the main characters, it was generally upbeat and much more optimistic than most of the later African literature that I have read.

Dnf
