HOW DO YOU STOP A HERO? Van must be convinced to leave Zoltan before he brings greater harm to this peaceful corner of the world. Changing the mind of one so zealously devoted to twisted beliefs won’t be easy, though. Red and the others decide to start by swaying Van’s companions, Lavender and Ljubo, hoping the Hero will listen to his allies. But will that be enough? Van needs someone who will get him to question his decisions and guide him to a better path…
Van the new Hero has left Zoltan after his defeat by Ruti, but Red and his companions are well aware he will return. So they prepare by investigating Van's companions and making other preparations to deal with the young man. After all, killing is not exactly an option since it would draw unwanted attention, but more importantly it would be bad for the people facing destruction by monster and demon.
The series shines in its characters and their growth, not just of the heroes of the story, but also the opponents. The dynamics of the Blessings might at times feel a bit heavy handed, but personally I like it and how the author explores its nature and impact on the world. It seems Gideon cannot flee his role as a Guide after all. Add in a nice mix of wholesome romance between single couples as opposed to the usual harem antics and it is a great change of pace.
It is a bit short though, light on action and at times a bit overly dramatic. Van's reaction to Gideon's probes felt a bit extreme even though it is blamed on his blessing and skewed upbringing.
Still, I liked it, and I am very curious where the story is going. I hope that we will finally learn more about the origin of Blessings and the nature of the Hero in the next volume.
