SOMETIMES FIRE AND ICE ARE PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER.

Brigitte Meidell belongs to a noble family, which means high expectations were placed upon her spirit contract. However, her bonded spirit turned out to be a weak no-name, and ever since, she has been a source of shame to her family. She thought her engagement to the prince would turn her life around, but when he publicly breaks off their relationship, she finds herself alone again. After her haughty, villainous behavior as the prince’s brideto- be, no one shows her much sympathy―except for the duke’s son Yuri, who attends the same magic academy. Yuri is feared for his incredible abilities and icy personality, but with him on her side, her fortunes might have changed...

Pretty darn good. I’m glad the MC h learned to be herself, just wish she had done it before the jerk Third Prince did what he could to ruin her. And THAT ENDING! Cliffhanger! I hope she gives him what for!

4, I am invested, stars.

Take a few tired villainess tropes, mix in a couple of reverse harem tropes, bake for an hour at 350, and you'll get this, a story that somehow manages to give us a surprisingly good book about Brigitte, a young woman grossly abused by her father and then dumped by her fiance in the classic denunciation scene. Brigitte's self esteem is in the garbage, and no one person gets her back on her feet - but Yuri (the stoic one) and Nival (the puppy one) both work with Kira (the girl one) to show Brigitte that she's not worthless. Plus I'm pretty sure that the Joseph (the prince one) isn't exactly as advertised, which should create drama. All in all, much better than I was expecting!

Real CW for the way Brigitte's father treats her, though.

This was a nice light read that required no mental effort. This is a slice of life story at a magical academy where students are paired with Spirits (Fairies).

The prince breaks up with his fiancè Brigitte publicly because she is mean to his friend Lisa. Lisa has an ulterior motive in spreading rumours. Prince Joseph is also responsible for Brigitte reputation as the Red fairy.

Brigitte decides to be her old self, but it is not going to be easy due to her reputation. She meets the 'Frozen Blade' Yuri, and slowly a friendship forms by being competitors . . . enemies to lovers.

Triggers: Bullying, abuse.

Such a cute romance and pallet cleanser after Case File Compendium.

I’ve already read volume 1 of the manga before the light novel, but something about the light novels make me so happy as I get more information and see the original story.

Brigitte and Yuri are two adorable villains who are really just misunderstood kids dealing with bullies. Their relationship is sure to flourish as they spend more time together. They care so deeply for one another that it’s tooth rotting sweetness.

I’m sure they’ll make even more friends along the way was they deal with Lisa and Joseph. And I can’t wait to see just how powerful Brigitte will be when we find out what spirit she’s contracted to.

such a quick and light read… as a villainess reincarnated/reborn/misunderstood trope enjoyer. this hit the spot! now add onto a ‘villain’ to the mix… but really MC/ML are barely villain-esque at all. it’s always the white lotus making a storm 😭

i enjoyed this so much and i can’t wait for feb 20 to come…!! vol 2 pls pls

Finally, I found my niche in light novels! It’s focused on romance and they tend to be romantic and a native fantasy. Then again, it helps that this light novel had a classic favorite romance trope for mine: forced proximity. Mainly, though, I liked that Brigitte had more going on than the abuse of the men (or really, her family) in her life. Even so, there may be underlying layers in their own issues with her that’s more than meets the eye. Generally, it’s not another “men bad, women good” type of novel so that’s good! It’s fun, actually.

Though, truthfully, I’m not sure why Yuri is considered a villain. Is it because he’s too focused on his studies rather than politics? Granted, he’s a bit more blunt than what’s expected or that he’s “cold” to everyone’s words. Well, it’s hard to tell so soon in this volume since it’s not only the first volume, but it's mostly Brigitte’s point of view too. This would have been something I would have docked points for, but it works since, again, it’s the first volume. It’d be unfair to judge it this hard this soon and when there’s actual plot going on. I do appreciate the fact that the plot does happen and not in a rushed pace to boot; this didn’t even feel like a light novel to me at all. As a matter of fact, despite the fact it is a light novel, the pacing felt equal, balanced, and it allowed me to have a good time with it.

Not only that, it got me to care about the main character. I think that one of the most important things is that it makes me wonder about the side characters that were introduced: is the girl Brigitte’s ex-fiance chose going to be nuanced? Rather, I hope she would be allowed to be nuanced since there’s so many questions already brought up in this volume. I can’t expect her to be friends with Brigitte, and it’s okay if she doesn’t. Mostly, I want to see what this author would do with this plot point. I hope it doesn’t take the easiest route and gives us some inner conflict within this character. Or maybe I’m just expecting too much. I wouldn’t know until the next volume. For now, I’ll just have to wait till then.

Either way, I’m glad Brigitte had some kind of allies. Sometimes when it comes to these types of plots, it’s easy to fall into certain tropes where everything a character like her would do is “terrible”. For a while, I was worried it was going to be that way. Luckily, it’s mostly concentrated at the school than at the cottage. Perhaps I’m attached to Brigitte too much when I say that the author and translation team really made the rejection felt through the text. If you’re the type to suffer a type of second-hand emotions… This might be a bit tough to chew. Luckily, I made it out okay, but just in case you are.

However, anime is going to anime and all I’m going to say is – I’m not expecting LGBT+ inclusion in books like this. If they do exist, I only hope they won’t be forced into a heteronormative relationship. It’s silly when straight people hit on clearly not straight people, sure, but I think I’ve watched so much anime that the trope wore itself once I thought about it for more than five seconds. However, your mileage may vary and I may have likely read too much into that one possible relationship. Again, I’ll have to wait until I get my hands on the second volume (and perhaps beyond) to know for sure.

For what it’s worth, this light novel is fun and it is interesting. Again, it’s still pretty tropey and I’m noticing a trend of villainess light novels/manga where they’re only perceived to be villainesses but they’re misunderstood. Maybe it’s just the way the translation team handled it but it has to come from somewhere. I loved this light novel and I cannot wait until I read the second one!

More like a 3.5, but I enjoyed it enough to round up. This story is like a mish-mash between Secrets of the Silent Witch (except more focus on romance) and Bride of the Barrier Master (except the love interest isn't quite as much as a boundary-violating jerk). It's got a female lead who's been unfairly traumatized by her family and circumstances and is just trying to find a little bit of love in a world that has been quite cruel to her.

Brigitte gets dumped by the prince, who himself is a bit of a mysterious character I'm sure we'll find more about later, and in her anger starts to turn over a new leaf and change some aspects about herself that she was doing simply to get others to like her. Except, those actions have colored her reputation and it's going to be a long way up from the bottom for Brigitte. In comes Yuri, an "Ice Blade" from a prestigious family, though not as elite as the royal family. He and Brigitte form a sort of competitive back and forth, bonding over their seclusion from most other students due to misunderstandings stemming from their not-so-friendly personalities.

I like how the world and magic work, and while it's a bit limited being only from Brigitte's point of view (though sometimes we get her main attendant's) and existing solely within the school grounds for the most part. I'm keen to see where the relationships go, not just between Brigitte and Yuri, but also Brigitte's pending platonic relationships with her classmates and others around her. Really, I just want to see her get her happiness after being cursed with such a horrific family.

I love a good slow burn. It’s so cute, I adore Yuri and Brigitte and I cannot wait to see their love grow. I think it is so interesting the spirit contracts and I’m excited to see Brigitte’s spirit and how it affects her. Overall such a sweet story and good read!!

Well paced and easy to enjoy

This was the first time that I actually hoped the author was going to retell a chunk of the story from the other main character's perspective. With how unemotive Yuri is, I think it would have been interesting to see some of the events from his perspective. Instead of getting a retelling to shorten the story overall, you just get more story. This is a refreshing choice showing that the author doesn't want to take the easy way out. It also leaves you hungry for more. While the story it's not anything outstandingly original, the characters are charming enough to carry it. I think I will read the next volume after all, I hope we find out more about her spirit.

Okay so I actually was hoping to read the manga....mangwa...which ever it is (sorry), but of course, as is the lot of north america, volume 2 isn't even out yet. Just one. And the powers of the internet only got me to volume 2...at most. So I have FINALLY listened to the many teenagers telling me "Light novels!" So here we are. Light novel!

First off, this light novel reads like a hi-lo (if you know, you kn0w). Not a bad thing really, just an observation. AND some devices in the plot are ever so subtly changed. This makes me wonder what other differences I am going to notice should I decide to go back to the manga as it gets released in English. It might be interesting to see.

Anyhow, I estimate that this light novel is 2.5-3 volumes worth of manga.

As stated in my manga review, I feel like this series was grossly misnamed. Brigitte may have been acting like a stuck up, clueless dunce before we are actually introduced to her (because she was trying to turn herself into what her 'fiancé' wanted her to be). But when we meet her she quickly becomes the 'poor idiot' who gets dumped by the Third Prince of the nation in favour of a different girl. Only she's not an idiot. Brigitte is actually pretty smart and is a hard worker. She's not naturally a mean spirited person. Neither is Yuri. There's nothing about either of them that earns them the title of villain. They're just a little different from their peers.

Okay, Spoilers beyond this point!

Yuri is a smart, no nonsense, highly skilled, straight 'shooter' of a boy. This makes him come off as rude to most people. You are argue he's on the spectrum because of some of his nuances. But basically, he says exactly what he thinks, and sugar coats nothing. So, not a villain.

Brigitte is actually a pretty sensitive person who really just desperately wants to belong somewhere and be loved by someone. So when the Prince decides she's the one he's going to get engaged to, she does anything he says in order to try and please him because she doesn't want him to leave her. She doesn't exactly love him, but he's the one person who reached out to her and offered her some sort of connection. She'll do anything to keep that connection because no one else, but her servants, gives her any sort of love or attention. She's basically disowned and abandoned by her parents and because she is contracted to a nameless one, no one sees any value in her....until the Prince dumps her in what appears to be some sort of manipulative game and Brigitte gets the opportunity to be her true self.

Plot-wise

If you wanted to be super general, this entire book is basically Brigitte making friends and showing her true colours to her classmates. First she enters into a contest to see who is the best with Yuri. Upon him finding out someone had interfered in their competition, they have another one. Their banter, studying of same resources, etc turns into some sort of friendship and Yuri obviously develops some feelings for Brigitte, who is a bit slower to get a clue. Upon saving her class members, Nival because a devotee...I guess, and slowly, a friend. Followed by Kira when Brigitte rescues her and forgives her in the forest.

Conclusion

Despite the whole series being grossly misnamed, I did enjoy this story. Written in a hi-lo type read you get to follow Brigitte through her journey of find her true self and making friends as a result.

Good for anyone who enjoys a story about a girl who seems to have the whole world against her, but rises up as a good person despite of it all, resulting in her acquiring a few faithful friends.

What is this?! It is so adorable and so fun to read! 😭

I love the characters and their personalities, I also love the fact that both of them are deserving of being called villains, compared to all those stories, where the "villain" is simply misunderstood. They feel really fleshed out characters and I love how unapologetic, sarcastic and witty Yuri is, which in my head fits quite well with how a lord should be 😂, but he is also so much more than that!

The only thing I scoffed at, was the speed with which Nival and Kira became so obsessed with Brigitte. Other than that, I also love the fact Brigitte was going through tough times and managing mostly on her own and we didn't have the cliché of the ML running to her in the nick of time to save the day.

I also noticed there are minor and major differences between the manga and the novel and I love how things are happening in the novel better, cause the manga mellowed out some things for the readers. In the book all the events feel much more realistic and satisfying. Let me give you two examples if you wish:

The first practical lesson they had on the field, where Nival's spirit went wild - in the manga, Brigitte hugged him and talked to him, and Yuri came rushing to catch her falling body, whereas in the novel she crawled to his feet and tried speaking to him, but it just got worse and Yuri never appeared there.

The second difference, is when Yuri freezes everyone when he got angry for Brigitte's sake. In the manga, Brigitte was the only other person free to move and she clinged to his arm to stop him from going wild. In the novel, Brigitte was just as frozen as the others aside from her hands and since she couldn't move, she threw a water stone at Yuri's head 😂😂😂 I swear I laughed out loud and appreciated how the scene developed far more, than I did reading the manga.

I won't give any more spoilers for other differences and I'll just say I giggled and kicked my feet so many times, watching these two interact. As for Sienna and Clifford - I ship it no matter what 😂 I love these two as well and they are also really well written characters (because the author loves them too apparently). I love seeing their background stories and their point of view about the ML and FL and the balance they bring to them and each other.

This was pretty cute and easy to read, despite the occasional WTF moments - for all that he wasn't really present for most of the plot, Brigitte's father is 100% a monster and if he doesn't get his comeuppance by the end of this series, I'm going to be Very Upset. On a much lighter note, I found the developing romance between Brigitte and Yuri to be adorable, if a bit awkward because Yuri is definitely not a sweet-talker kind of guy. I'm honestly also kind of surprised that I was left with so many questions by the end. I thought at least some of them would have been answered already but I somehow ended up with more than I started with. Talk about a great way to make me want to read the next book!

How do I explain how I feel?

I knew walking in that there would be a high chance that this would be a villain falls for the "villainess" story, vs. villainess story. But a part of me still felt lightly betrayed when it was the case. Essentially, her fiancée frames her as a villainess to break up their engagement.

I think he can be classified as a villain at least.

All of that being said, it's cute and romantic. There's moments that just make your heart flutter... like when a certain scene happens with rumors floating and the villain's response is to cause frost to seep throughout the entire room. Like the age old statement of "I would burn the world for you."

It has exactly the tropes that I expected it to have which is fine! I'm not a huge fan of the the relationship aspect of the book and almost felt like the premise would've been stronger if the MC took a step back from love and instead focused on herself/making friends- but I don't exactly read light novels for amazing writing, their cliches and tropes are what make them comfy stories to read quickly. I was personally pleased that the school aspect isn't a huge focus of the story. The writing/translation is pretty clean and I didn't find any errors or odd dialogue. I'll definitely be picking up the next when it releases

I really enjoyed this light novel. It is geared more towards the younger tweens, but I loved the *swoony* moments. There isn't many, but when you get them, they make you smile.

But when she tried to pull away, he pulled her closer, and his arm softly trapped her. It was surprisingly warm for someone called the Frozen Blade. At the mercy of that warmth she had longed for, she whispered. "Thank you..Sir Yuri."

It did have a slow start, but I am glad I took my time with it because it does end in a cliff-hanger. The little artwork we got in the book is chef's kiss. I am looking forward to the next book.

4.5 out of enjoyment

The villainess trope has been done to death, but honestly this one is a fun, light reading with some really well done tense moments. One thing that it was unexpectedly well portrayed was the FMC trauma, which is deeply rooted in her; it doesn't take priority, but whenever it comes, it is pretty realistic.

I super recommend this, especially if you like the royalty/villainess trope.

A fairly basic romance story about a mistreated noble girl who eventually turns out to be more capable than anybody believed. Despite the title, neither of the main characters really act like villains aside from being kinda unapproachable. This series is largely wholesome, though there is some drama, naturally. The existence of magical familiars (and how the MC is the only person in her age group who hasn't met hers yet) gives the series a much needed identity, because it is otherwise rather typical.

It's a good palette cleanser series. Nothing groundbreaking, but will definitely tide you over in between other, more involved stories.

An entertaining, mostly light (though it gets into some dark stuff) slow burn romance. Bonus for being just a straight-up fantasy and not another reborn-into-an-otome-game story. The two main characters were likable (though, Brigitte's behavior did grate a bit, it was understandable considering her backstory). I am hoping we learn more about Yuri in the next volume. Also, more Sienna and Clifford.

This was such a quick read and I appreciated that it didn't try to be "crafty" and "wordy" by going into descriptions. That being said, the style is more of a Wattpad story. It is very to the point - get the story out. And I loved that!

It is just simple. Lacks background. Lacks build up. Yes. Things just happen just for the purpose of pushing them together. Yes.
But all the story elements are there. And it just works.

It is not enemy to lovers. It is just a story about two misunderstood individuals.

Loveable Characters

The book was different than what I though it was. I gave it four stars because it was left on a cliff hanger and it usually take a while for the new volume to come out. A very likeable read. I like the male lead attitude and the fact he even stands up to the prince. I want to know what her spirit is, so will probably buy the next volume. Would recommend this story.

emotional roller coaster

Very well written. Can’t count how many times I had to staunch the river pouring from my eyes. There was some strange behavior that wasn’t explained but I have hopes that it might be dealt with in future. I refer to the, I hate you enough to try to kill you and demand you be expelled, to a complete reversal in the same day to I’m sorry I devote myself to you hereafter.

A cute, fun and easy read. I loved that Brigitte wasn’t full of negative self-talk (unlike some other lead characters in light novels). She did have insecurities but there were plenty of moments where she showed bravery and stood up for herself. Luckily volume 2 is out and I’m about to start it! I have a feeling she’s going to remain oblivious to Yuri’s feelings for her and it’s going to annoy me but hopefully I’m wrong!!

I laughed I cried I loved it!

It's got all the tsundere tropes, but they are very well done! I think this is my first story with two semi-tsundere characters interacted with each other, but I really liked how the author handled it. Tsundere behavior usually REALLY grates on me, but these characters were marvelously adorable! I cannot wait for more!

I'm so glad the FL was neither transmigrated nor reincarnated. As much as like reading such books, I wanted to read something different. Her family are a real piece of work and I hope they all go to hell for it. I still don't get why Nival changed so much, but I'm glad she stopped isolating herself.

I love this! The heroine has such a deep backstory and a plausible reason for her previous behavior. She’s a true underdog but she’s struggling and trying to change her fate. And I love how there’s some mystery about her contracted spirit.
