Die Blüte von Paris
Rose, ein 19-jähriger junger Mann, wächst Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in einem Pariser Kabarett auf. Wie alle jungen Tänzerinnen dort möchte auch er in extravaganten Outfits auf der Bühne auftreten. Durch sein Talent wird er schnell zur Hauptattraktion und verzaubert besonders Aimé, einen vom Leben gelangweilten Millionär. Feinfühlig unterstützt er Rose auf der Suche nach der eigenen Identität unabhängig vom biologischen Geschlecht.

In a Nutshell: A stunning graphic novel depicting the coming-of-age of a young dancer in 1920s France. Works beautifully as an alternate-history story where people are a bit more open about gender inclusivity. Definitely worth a read at least for the illustrations.
Story Synopsis:
While I usually talk about illustrations at the end of my reviews, this book deserves a change in the typical order. Though it has plenty to offer, its best feature is the visual extravaganza on every page. Never have I seen such soul-satisfying artwork! Right from the flowers in the background to the outfits to the outdoor scenes, every panel seems like a frame from a top-notch animated movie. There's such intricate detailing and such lushness to the colours that I could just stare at the graphics for hours in awe and wonder.
Of course, graphics alone aren't enough. Without a worthy story, even the best illustrations can go only so far. Thankfully, in this case, the story is more than worthy.
One would assume that a story about a cabaret would be risqué, or that the life of its dancers would be shown as full of struggles, or that outsiders would view them with scornful eyes. But the way the dancers have been written in this story left me feeling like I knew them as persons rather than as showgirls. Not once does the book become judgemental about their profession, nor does it portray them in a demeaning or vulgar manner. Even when certain revelations indicate how degrading opinions about the profession existed, this was relegated to the background and never overpowered the story. Though there is partial nudity on a few pages, it is handled with class and never the focal point of that panel. To me, this genuine and respectable portrayal of the human side of cabaret performers was the second biggest achievement of this book, second only to the graphics.
Rose is a vulnerable and loveable central character. Like his name, he is tender-hearted and beautiful, spreading joy with his looks and grace. Also in a nod to his name, he looks at life mostly with rose-tinted glasses, being positive even when it's tough to be so. Sometimes, the thorns in his life overcome him, but the amazing support system he has through the other flowers of Le Jardin and through his friend Aimé ensures that Rose returns to being rosy.
I enjoyed how every dancer of Le Jardin was appropriately named after a flower, and even their costumes and accessories signified the flower they were. (I was today years old when I learnt that marguerite is a kind of flower! 👀) The bond among the ‘flowers’ and their relationship with their beloved Rose comes out wonderfully.
Aimé is also an interesting character, in that he never looks at Rose in a sexual way. The connect between the two is more of the heart than of the body. (I must clarify that the book never takes things to the romantic level, though the blurb hints otherwise. Any romantic connection between Aimé and Rose is only vague and never brought to the forefront.)
That said, the book isn't flawless. I'd have preferred Rose's age to be established right at the start rather than waiting till almost the end to know that he's twenty. I’d have liked the story to be a little less saccharine and a bit more layered. I'd have loved some more details about Rose’s parents and the circumstances of his birth in Le Jardin. But in the grand scheme of things, these points are relatively trivial, especially as the overall impact of the book is exhilarating. The title tells us clearly that the story is about the boy named Rose, and that's all we get.
Though a historical story, it's better to go into this novel expecting an alternate reality. No matter how forward Paris might have been in the 1920s, it still wouldn't have been this accepting about same-sex friendships and about men dancing in a feminine way, and so on. The inclusivity is too modernised to be authentic, and the lack of gender conflict stands out, just as the scene with one character asking another about their preference of pronouns does. But I didn't mind all this. I might have judged it differently were it a historical fiction novel, but a graphic novel can get away with flexible storytelling.
The prepublication version I read had some typographical errors, so I hope that these will be ironed out before the final printing. Also, while the entire text has been translated from the original language the book was written in, the letter at the end is still in French. Luckily, I know un peu de français, so I could understand the content. However, the letter is quite relevant for the finale, and hence needs to be in English so that readers who might not know French can get proper closure.
All in all, this was the beautiful graphic novel where visuals, gender themes and characters come together to create a mesmerizing impact.
Definitely recommended, and not just for its artwork. The story offered me a sensational escape from historical actualities, and the sketches elevated my spirits to a whole new realm.

La hermosura y la delicadeza de este libro me han dejado absolutamente hipnotizado y sin palabras. Pocas veces he visto una obra que se deleite tanto en los detalles, que trate con tanto cariño a personajes, ambientes, atrezzo y, a la postre, a quien tiene el cómic entre las manos. Se me ocurren pocas obras con esta capacidad de que te quieras meter entre esas páginas. Es tan sensorial que, literalmente, te envuelve: y escuchas la música de los años veinte, y te deslumbras por el tintineo de las perlas y las lentejuelas, y sientes en las manos el frufrú de las telas de los vestidos, y hueles cada flor que ilumina esta historia.
A Rosa le criaron entre las vedettes del cabaret de su madre y, claro, cuando cumple la mayoría de edad, también quiere bailar. Aunque el público no sabe muy bien si lo que tiene delante es un chico o una chica, los fascinantes bailes de Rosa maravillan a todo el París de los años 20 y empiezan a convertirle en un personaje célebre de la noche francesa. Y le nace un admirador, cómo no, que observa cada noche su espectáculo desde primera fila. Y la fama y esa nueva florenciente amistad hacen que el pequeño mundo en el que se había criado Rosa se tambalee y cambie.
No ha habido una página de este libro que no haya maravillado. Ha sido un disfrute absoluto. Mucho tiene que sorprenderme el año para que haya un cómic que me guste más que este. Qué hermosura, qué delicadeza. Qué importante.

No solo es bonito el dibujo, la historia y el cómo trata los temas de identidad, género, relación con desconocidos vs familia... Todo está tan bien tratada y es tan orgánico y fiel al personaje?? No sé cómo expresarlo pero 10/10. Also vestidos de cabaret pretty

Pues me ha gustado pero quizás me esperaba más??? Como que me gusta mucho el arte y algunas cosas de plot y los asuntos de género que están súper orgánicos metidos pero como que lo que es la historia me ha dejado un poco fría?? No se, creo que tenía muchas espectivas a lo mejor

Sucede en París, durante los felices años 20, en El Jardín, un cabaret de ambiente familiar; cuando Rosa, que ha crecido en ese lugar, cumple la mayoría de edad, decide que también quiere bailar y se enamora del escenario, de la libertad, del baile; el público, que no sabe muy bien si están viendo a una chica o a un chico, también se enamora por completo, y pronto le surge un admirador. Pronto, se convierte en la máxima sensación de la noche parisina.
Lo dicho: menuda maravilla. Nunca había leído una historia como esta, y dudo mucho que vuelva a toparme con algo parecido, la forma en que me ha abrazado, en que me ha hecho sentir bien, me ha transmitido la alegría, la emoción, y la libertad de Rosa y del resto de chicas del Jardín, así como sus esperanzas, sueños y miedos... ha sido fascinante.
La historia, de por sí, es una auténtica fantasía de lo bonita y actual que es, los personajes tan preciosos, las relaciones entre ellos... y las ilustraciones. Es que me pasaba muchísimo tiempo en cada página por la cantidad ingente de detalles que había, por los colores... ¡una auténtica belleza!

Après avoir lu Minuit Passé de la même autrice, je me suis jetée sur ce roman graphique. On y suit Rose, un jeune garçon qui fait ses premiers pas de danseur dans le cabaret qui l'a vu grandir. J'ai absolument adoré toute la douceur et la bienveillance qui émane de ce jardin. Quel plaisir de voir un personnage aussi épanoui malgré certains doutes, qui a grandi dans une famille aimante entourée de fleurs aussi merveilleuse que délicieuses.
Les illustrations sont divines, avec des tons très doux qui nous embarquent dans le Paris des années 20 avec ces costumes, ces décors qui nous en mettent plein la vue !

October 29, 2025SUCH an inspiring art style!! I believe the artist may have an animation background, or at least the art feels like it - taking time over each moment. Its colour holds, shape language and economy feel very European and mid-century disney, while also being quite modern and distinct, with really gorgeous colours.
Following a GNC cabaret dancer in 1920s Paris, this story is neither raunchy nor deeply focused on gender struggle, but instead very gentle. The heart of the story is about growing up and finding oneself among change and creative pressures, and the appeal of the main character is how full of life and joy and in some ways slightly naive they are. Rose lives a charmed life at the cabaret and faces little pushback about his gender expression as a woman in public - and we don’t deeply explore her inner emotions much when she does. She reads as a full, nuanced and I think (modern) believable character, but at some distance from the reader, who's left to make their own impressions.
That also makes the story fairly detached from history or reality! It doesn't speak to dysphoria or any fear around passing or violence at all, which to me puts it purely in the world of fantasy - but a compelling and uplifting fantasy.
That’s exactly what some readers will need, and I think makes its appeal broad. It does what it sets out to perfectly - even if for me it meant the visuals and beautiful atmosphere of its moments were the main draw.
(Also, my French just isn’t good enough to read in the original, so I’m grateful for a few more GNs from across Europe being picked up for translation and made accessible - I was delighted to find this in my local library system!)

Le Jardin, Paris est une bande dessinée absolument sublime! Les illustrations sont douces et envoûtantes et l’histoire est d’une bienveillance réconfortante. L’autrice et illustratrice nous parle d’épanouissement, de beauté et de passion avec énormément de talent et s’inscrit définitivement en tant que valeur sûre après ces deux oeuvres magnifiques. Certainement une de mes plus belles lectures de l'année.

Un roman graphique plein de douceur et de couleur dans le décor d’un cabaret parisien. J’ai adoré découvrir le Jardin et ses fleurs, voir Rose s’épanouir et éclore. C’est doux, bienveillant et merveilleux 🧡

Si Minuit passé m'a fait penser à Pandora Hearts, Le Jardin m'a plutôt emmené dans un roman de Malika Ferdjoukh, pour l'ambiance de sororité qui y règne, le Paris des années 20, le cabaret, les hommes qui sont des perles et qu'on rêverait d'avoir dans nos vies au lieu des horribles spécimens qu'on se tape la plupart du temps <3
Je suis décidément tellement fan de Gaëlle Geniller, tout ce qui sort de son cerveau est EXQUIS je rêve de l'étudier au microscope et de le décortiquer c'est tellement ma VIBE !! Non seulement je suis sous le charme de son esthétique, mais ses dessins sont superbes et les dialogues touchent toujours en plein coeur!
Comme dans Minuit passé, elle aborde des thèmes qui me touchent énormément. Ici on parle de trouver sa place dans le monde sans renier qui on est, sans se perdre par rapport aux attentes de la société, de démêler ce qu'on attend de nous et ce qu'on est VRAIMENT. Le tout avec des personnages tellement touchants (je croque Rose) et de la bienveillance, si bien qu'on referme le livre avec beaucoup d'espoir et d'apaisement.
Croyez bien que je serais à l'AFFÛT de tout ce que cette madame proposera par la suite (j'ai déjà les notifs instagram activées).

Iba completamente a ciegas con este libro: no tenía ni idea de su existencia hasta que me llegó por sorpresa... y menuda absoluta maravilla: visualmente es PRE-CIO-SO, pero es que la historia, los personajes, y todas y cada una de las páginas son magníficas: dulce, tierno y emotivo.

J'ai peur de ne plus savoir qui je suis. J'ai très peur que tous ces gens... me changent en quelqu'un que je ne suis pas.
Un roman graphique d'une beauté et d'une douceur absolument incroyables.
L'ambiance joyeuse et sensuelle du cabaret ; les magnifiques tenues, costumes et décors ; les personnages terriblement attachants (Rose évidemment, mais aussi Tournesol et Léon, Muguet ou encore Marguerite) et les belles amitiés qui se créent (Eugénie, Coquelicot) ; la délicate poésie des dialogues ; le regard de l'autre, le genre et son expression qui sont traités d'une manière que j'ai rarement vue...
Quant au coup de crayon de l'illustratrice : il est tout bonnement mer-veil-leux. J'ai été captivée par la beauté des illustrations, des couleurs, des traits. Je m'en vais de ce pas ajouter Les Fleurs de grand-frère à ma pile à lire et j'ai hâte de découvrir ce que Gaëlle Geniller nous réserve dans le futur.
En bref, impossible de poser ce petit bijou, je l'ai lu d'une traite et je pense bien le relire régulièrement tant je l'ai aimé !

Bien que le visuel, les dessins étaient incroyablement réussis et donnaient au livre une veritable ambiance de cabaret parisien de l'entre deux guerres, la narration et le récit en eux mêmes ne suivent malheureusement pas la marche.
Beaucoup d'éléments étaient évoqués sans jamais accomplir une veritable progression dans l'intrigue. Les conflits ne faisaient que sommeiller au bord du réveil mais jamais plus loin, d'une façon qui avec du recul semble rendre difficile la progression des personnages en eux-même.
Cependant il en reste que l'attitude assez insouciante de la présentation de genre du personnage principal Rose bien que naïve (again entre deux guerres) laisse voir un peu des idées qui se cachent derrière un cabaret entièrement féminin et dirigé par une femme (encore sous-exploitée). Des fois il faut se dire que carpe diem et puis on a pas vraiment besoin d’explications.
