Rate this book
Hold Still  meets  You've Reached Sam  in this lyrical YA novel about one young woman's journey through the Paris fashion scene as she chases promises, overcomes grief, and falls in love.

Seventeen-year-old Alix Leclaire dreams of becoming a renowned feather artist, creating statement pieces that define glamour and high fashion. As an intern at Paris’s premier feather boutique, trained by the alluring Raven, she works with the staff to construct wings for the dancers at the Moulin Rouge.

But with every feather she sews, the grief Alix has been evading looms. Her best friend, Jeanne, died months ago and ever since, Alix has felt compelled to live as Jeanne did, taking risks she never would have before. Alix begins stealing feathers for her own use—a serious offense at the boutique—and loses herself in a passionate affair with Raven, who makes her his muse. Even when Blaise, an old schoolmate, offers solace and healing, she pushes him away.

Echoing the chaos and division in her heart, the wings that Alix creates take on a frightening and wild beauty. Living like Jeanne has given her everything she ever wanted—but at the risk of losing it all.

I want to thank NetGalley for the advanced reading of this book. I liked this book it was very well written. The story is about Alix who wants to be a top premiere feather designer in Paris. She got a job at a top premiere feather boutique because she promised her friend she would follow her dream. The tragic thing is her friend Jeanne who she made this promise to passed away in a car accident. Alix learns the ropes of the job by being trained by Raven the dark mysterious boy who is the shop owners son and a feather artist. In the meantime her shop wins the bid for the next Moulin Rouge show. In the meantime Alix is torn between the handsome bad boy Raven and her friend from school Blaise who is a very cute and nice musician. At an age of self discovery and also fighting the grief and guilt of her best friends death. Plus the family that abandoned her, life is a struggle for her everyday while trying to chase her dreams. A very quick read. The book has you rooting for Alix to make it throughout her trials. It's a very good read that I recommend.

👍 What I Loved:
—>self discovery
—>fighting the grief and guilt of her best friend's death
—>the family abandonment (?)
—>life is a struggle for her everyday while trying to chase her dreams
—>a very quick read.

The book has you(not me tho...) rooting for Alix to make it throughout her trials.

🤔 Thoughts:
Before I say something else I want to let everyone know that i have a love and hate relationship with this book.
Alix was a b**** but the she out grew herself and became a bit bearable. I have always hated book girls who are torn between 2 different boys at the same time and still somehow, I always end up picking up books with that trope... From Avery to Alix, I am unable to pick just one certain emotion for them between love and hate.
Books like this one make me question my own ability of comprehension.... tbh, Raven was not a "bad boy" as everyone else keeps saying, he is just a kid stuck in his own tragedies(?) and difficulties, he deserved better!! Blaise is our goody two shoes(not in the last few pages👀) he also deserves better, this Alix girl.... nah he should get someone better!!! Blaise and Alix are breaking up after the epilogue for sure!!
Will definitely recommend everyone to read this book so y'all can also feel the rush of multiple emotions i felt while reading this!

Going into this book I really didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t really read the synopsis and pretty much went blind. But that sometimes end up being the best thing. This book for sure took me through a wide range of emotions. Which I absolutely love in a book. I love books that can make you feel.
The topic of grief is for sure a tricky one to navigate in my opinion, and some authors tend to not do it justice. And by that I mean showing how you live with it every day and it sneaks up on you during the most random times.
And this book shows that perfectly while Showing how it impacts your day-to-day life. A lot of the characters could’ve used more filling out but overall I did like the story. The main character ,Alix, emotional arc was for sure one that was believable and had me on this rollercoaster of a ride with her.
Would for sure recommend this book to anyone looking for a book to remind you that the best way to honor someone who has passed on is to enjoy every moment as you are living it and to never take anything for granted.

Thanks to the folks at NetGalley for a copy of this book. My review is a honest reflection of my feelings towards this book.

*3.5 STARS*

Content Warning: neglectful parent and abandonment, death, grief

+ I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book because it is very lyrical, and we are in Alix’s head a lot. Alix’s mother left her and her dad, her dad is a neglectful parent and her best friend just died. Alix finds herself being brave enough to ask to apprentice at a feather artist shop. I thought her growth in the story was inspiring. I loved Alix’s connection to feathers and how working at the shop helped her open up to people, and to her own art.

+ My favorite part of the story I think had to be about the feathers! Mademoiselle Salomé is a premier feather artist in Paris. I went to the Moulin Rouge during my honeymoon so I was actually fascinated about the setting and theme of this book. I could really envision these feather works of arts that Mademoiselle Salomé and her team would create and loved the drama behind the scenes with the other staff at Mille et Une Plume. I liked the secondary characters in the book also, they had so much character.

+ The romance is a bit of a love triangle. Alix is caught between two boys. She starts hooking up with one boy, Raven and then starts befriending the other boy, Blaise, as they both grieve over Alix’s best friend. You could kind of tell how it would play out and honestly, I didn’t mind it because Alix is a broken soul. And if she’s looking for love because she doesn’t even have parents around to be there for her, then I was there rooting for her on this journey – even if it meant her trying to fix some relationships.

~ This is all part of Alix’s growth but she is very timid at times especially in the beginning and I just wanted her to do the right thing, when she did the wrong thing.  She doesn’t know how to communicate how she feels and that was frustrating at times. Like I said, she learns eventually to come clean, so there is growth in her character.

~ There is a lot of French words and I didn’t know what they meant but it didn’t make it hard reading. I just hoped I was saying them correctly in my head – but I’m pretty sure I was wrong!

My Thoughts:

I thought this was a beautiful story about personal growth and how an obsession with feathers helped keep Alix afloat during her grief of losing her best friend and even losing her dad, who leaves her in a time when she really needs someone to stay with her. I love how Alix finds a family with the staff at Mille et Une Plume and she learns a lot about fashion, and actually expressing herself. The secondary characters really bring the story to life and the romance, though a love triangle, I thought had a beautiful ending. By the end of the book I was as obsessed with the feathers as Alix was.

Seventeen-year-old Alix Leclaire has been standing at the threshold of Mademoiselle Salome's boutique, home to the most renowned plumassie're (feather artist) in Paris, for some time. It isn't Alix's first attempt to reach the front door, but only now has she mustered the courage to actually knock. To her surprise, Mademoiselle Salome' herself answers. Clumsily Alix blurts out that she wants to be her apprentice and is invited inside when Mademoiselle Salome' becomes intrigued by the feather that is tattooed on Alix's arm.

Alix has always been captivated by birds and feathers, dreaming of sprouting her own wings. Working at the boutique, renowned for its high-fashion, feather inspired pieces, has been her ultimate goal. Ever since Alix's mom left, it's been only her and her father. As a musician, he often leaves her alone when he is performing, and especially now that he has a new girlfriend. Alix's friend, Jeanne has always been like a sister to Alix. They even promised to pursue their dreams together. Jeanne wanted to become a rockstar and Alix a feather artist. However, Jeanne's passing has made it difficult for Alix to keep their promise.

Mademoiselle Salome' takes an interest in Alix and directs her son, Raven to start her training. Their first project involves crafting a series of unique wings for the Moulin Rouge dancers. Alix is instantly captivated by Raven's stunning looks and his bold, wild and mysterious/playful demeanor. He clouds her judgement leading to Alix taking risks and liberties with Mademoiselle Salome's precious feathers, using them to create her own feather bouquets, despite the stern warnings she received about stealing. Then Alix encounters an old schoolmate, Blaise, who is gentle, kind and possess information about Jeanne's death. Will Alix be able to face the truth about what happened to her best friend? And could her reckless, impulsive actions lead to trouble at the shop?

Mademoiselle Salome' s boutique sounds like a lush, extravagant place. Perhaps even a bit magical as the feathers seem to flutter or hum softly when Alix is present. The various descriptions of the wings that they constructed for the Moulin Rouge also sound fascinating, especially the bird feathers that were chosen. I really wish that there were illustrations of each one of them. The closest that I could come to visualizing the wings is in comparing them to Katniss Everdeen's dress when it caught on fire, I imagine the wings were stunning when displaying the feathers. The romance triangle between Alix, Blaise and Raven was just ok for me. I didn't expect Raven to last, he felt too much like a playboy up against Blaise, who was sweet, if a little aloof.

Alix was a fascinating character with a passion for poetry, sewing, embroidery and drawing. She is talented and diligently works toward her goals, yet also struggles with self-doubt. Jeanne's death deeply impacted her, and Alix seemed to be haunted by remnants of her friend's presence as she went about her daily routine, which caused her immense sorrow and loneliness. I wished there were more flashbacks in the story that captured more of the special moments between Alix and Jeanne, as there were times when Alix's sorrow was hard for me to relate to. Nevertheless, I really appreciated the Parisian setting and the integration of French phrases into the story. Toward the end of the book, Alix showed significant growth in her self-confidence and thanks to Blaise's Aunt Constance, she was ultimately able to express her feelings aloud and to come to terms with her friend's death. **A huge thank you to Media Matters for the hardcover copy in exchange for an honest review**

Even though If I Promise You Wings needed a little time to take off, I was very moved by the story and the imageries its lyrical writing produced. It's a sorrowful yet beautiful tale of love and loss.

If I Promise You Wings tackled heavy topics like grief. Alix's loss was prominently felt throughout the book. Her best friend was her everything and to lose Jeanne the way she did, it was extra heartbreaking. Yet this loss opened the door to Alix's majestic adventure with feathers. Such a unique idea to have the feathers represent different emotions. Delightful images popped into my mind as I read.

Alix's connection with the feathers was very magical. She channeled them into some magnificent creations. I especially loved watching the ladies of Mille et Une Plume construct the wings for Moulin Rouge. The competition was fierce but all of them were very talented with unmatched creativity.

Family was a big theme in If I Promise You Wings. Through shared trauma, Alix and Blaise grew closer. He was sweet and so patient with her. The introduction of Blaise's aunt provided relief and helped bridge gaps. I also really liked that Alix's absent father didn't just completely disappear. He eventually cleaned up his act and returned to his daughter.

Incredibly imaginative and deeply heartfelt, we need more stories like If I Promise You Wings!

This book centers around Alix, who has dreamed of being a top premiere feather designer and known in the fashion world for her designs. However, even though she has had this dream, she never felt as if she was good enough or would ever have the courage to even pursue it.

But when her friend tragically dies, she promises herself she will pursue her dreams in honor of her best friend.

What I really enjoyed about this one is that Alix decided that she had nothing else to lose by going after her dreams. As she was not only grieving from her friend's death but also being abandoned by her mother and neglected by her father with him constantly traveling.

Her self-esteem was so low in her own abilities that she never even considered that her passion came from her own desires and not someone elses.

"𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘨𝘰, 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘴."

This novel is a coming-of-age, self-worth, and believing in yourself novel set in the backdrop of Paris fashion. It showcases the complexities of grieving a toxic friendship (relationship) and struggling to define oneself after a lifetime of neglect.

This book was so unbelievably boring that I kept losing track of it, and finally gave up on trying to make sense of the story. It's something about a girl grieving her friend, who sounds pretty terrible. To deal with her grief this girl, Alix, goes to work in a feather shop that makes haute couture for fashion designers even though she knows nothing about sewing. Alix steals some feathers, which is a huge deal for some reason. She doesn't want to live in her apartment by herself so she lives in the feather shop, possibly without permission. She likes two boys, who seemed mostly interchangeable except one has a wealthy, eccentric aunt, and one hovers around the feather shop for reasons that weren't clear to me. Her father is a musician. She drifts around Paris being mopey.

I loved the cover, which is why I picked this one off my pile of ARCs. I thought it would be more focused on the beauty of feathers in fashion, and the politics of Paris design. There was something in the story about Alix's rivalry with another feather shop person, but it was so tedious I didn't understand it.

I guess for fans of dull, annoying YA this would be ok? Not for me though.

I know this book was lyrical, which I think will lead me to be skeptical from now on. I was ready to read a book about loss and grieving but I found it to be very slow paced, even for a book that wasn't even 350 pages. I found myself skimming the pages, trying to finish it. I felt like I wasn't able to focus on it much because of how much I disliked the way it was written. The feathers were defiantly different though, and I'm curious on why the author chose them.

Incredible!
I didn’t know feather artistry was a thing but damn it’s kinda cool! I loved the way the love triangle was handled, i loved how the character was so real, and i really just loved all the growth in every character.

i wish the third act breakup had been handled better, but it was impressive that she managed to break up with two guys at once.

this got me out of my slump so 🫶🫶

In this beautiful story of love, loss, and grief, a young creative finds her family and her passion while working at a feather shop in the heart of Paris.

Like many, this cover immediately captivated me. Whoever did that art - immediate raise.

This book hit a lot of high notes for me. Like many other reviews will tell you, the writing flows almost effortlessly and is a real joy to read. There is a small band of characters that we get to meet along Alix's journey, and all of them feel like their own, unique people with hopes, dreams, and disappointments. I felt that this was done particularly well here not in spite of, but due to the book's short length. The fact that the author made me feel all kinds of emotions for these characters with just 300 pages to develop them really is an amazing feat. I've read books twice this length that failed to connect me to the characters the way that this did.

The atmosphere in this book was also off the charts. I tend to read a lot of thriller and horror, where atmosphere is really important to setting the tone. In other kinds of books (realistic fiction, for example) I don't usually find the atmosphere to be quite as much of a dealbreaker in terms of quality - it's nice if it's there, but it isn't going to drop stars if it isn't. This book might actually make me look at that differently in the future. If I Promise You Wings feels like walking through a watercolor painting. The thing absolutely drips with this with this idyllic picture of youth; running wild through the streets of Paris without a single fear, your whole life ahead of you and shining with possibility.

There were a few small bits that took this down from a five-star rating. First, the book uses a copious amount of French. Yes, I know that the book is set in Paris, but I've read plenty of books set here that did not include quite so many French phrases. I know the scantest amount of this language that is possible to know without saying that you know none (I can say "yes", "no", and "Do you speak French?", and the popular-in-America phrase, "c'est la vie"). Having the characters speak French without immediate translation took me out of the book at times because I felt I had to Google some things or get left behind in the dialogue.

My other small critique has to do with the ending. Spoilers ahead.

At the cemetery with Blaise (and, reader, I had a very hard time taking Raven and Blaise , the two main love interests, seriously) we find out that Jeanne's accident was This change's Alix's whole perspective about her friend and seems to help her move on. I wasn't sure what this huge final reveal was supposed to mean, exactly. That life isn't just random and cruel? I honestly half-wish this bit was kept out and Alix stayed in the dark about the accident. Some things are better left unknown.

Overall, this was an excellent read and I would absolutely recommend it to others. It's on the mature side of YA and hits on a lot of very tough topics like addiction, the pain of loss, and loneliness, but it isn't telling us anything we don't already know - the world can be unkind, and it is up to us to find light and reason for being after tragedy.

Thank you Netgalley and Algonquin Young Readers for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

"If I Promise You Wings" by A.K. Small is a beautifully crafted YA book that takes readers on a poignant journey of self-discovery, grief, and resilience amidst the backdrop of Parisian fashion. If you are someone who likes “Emily in Paris” (minus some of the over-the-top drama), then you may find yourself really enjoying this book, especially with the MC’s character.

The story follows Alix Leclaire, a determined teenager with aspirations of becoming a renowned feather artist. However, her dreams are overshadowed by the tragic loss of her best friend, Jeanne, who perished in a car accident. Despite grappling with grief and self-doubt, Alix embarks on a courageous quest to fulfill the promise she made to Jeanne: to pursue her passion for feather design. I feel like I learned a lot about feather design in this book. I didn’t even really know it was a thing or just how complicated this design process is, but Small is definitely able to make this niche topic very interesting!

From the moment you meet Alix, you are drawn into her world of pain, longing, and untapped potential. Small’s writing sucks you into Alix’s world, and the way she portrays Alix's emotional journey captures the complexities of grief and the transformative power of pursuing one's dreams.

I absolutely loved the evocative prose and vivid imagery that transports you to the streets of Paris, where you are immersed in the glamorous yet tumultuous world of haute couture. I really felt like I was in Paris with the rich descriptions, though the book maybe glamorizes Paris a little. The descriptions of feather designs and the intricate process of creating them also adds depth and richness to the story, enhancing your understanding of Alix's passion and artistic vision.

While the story tackles weighty topics such as addiction, loss, and loneliness, it is ultimately a tale of hope and redemption. It was a story that made me invested in Alix’s character as I was able to see her grow as an artist. As Alix navigates the highs and lows of her journey, she discovers the strength within herself to overcome obstacles and embrace her true identity. In the beginning, she seems a bit immature/selfish, but she definitely grows on you as she grows herself.

Overall, "If I Promise You Wings" is a poignant and uplifting novel that resonates long after the final page. A.K. Small's exquisite storytelling and compelling characters make this book a must-read for fans of YA contemporary books as well as those who want to experience Paris fashion without the expensive travel.

After Alix's best friend Jeanne dies, she decides it's time to take control of her own life, just like Jeanne would. Her dream is to become a feather artist. With the memory of Jeanne in mind, she takes a chance and knocks on Mademoiselle Salome's door. She's a renowned feather artist and on a whim, takes Alix in as an assistant. Here, she meets Mademoiselle Salome's son, Raven, who makes her feel something. He sees something in her that makes him think she'll be an amazing feather artist, and this gives her the encouragement she needs.

Flashing between past and present, Alix tries to come to terms that Jeanne is really gone. Without her father around, the staff at Mademoiselle Salome's place quickly becomes the family she never had. They're willing to help shape the artist in her and she's one step closer to her dreams coming true. Yet, she can't shake this overwhelming grief with the absence of Jeanne. Along the way she meets Blaise who is also grieving the loss of Jeanne. Alix finds herself in a love triangle between Raven and Blaise as her heart finally starts to heal.

IF I PROMISE YOU WINGS is a lyrical contemporary story that is about overcoming grief after the loss of a best friend. While the story focuses on Alix's grief and journey, there's also a love triangle to add some romantic tension and a neglectful father, which gives more insight to why Alix struggles even more. Jeanne was her only true family and when she died, Alix lost everything. IF I PROMISE YOU WINGS is all about Alix finding family in the unlikeliest of places while making her dream come true. I love seeing her growth and her love for feathers make me see the beauty in them too. I never knew there were so many things you can do with feathers and it makes me look at them differently now.

Final Verdict: I would recommend this to fans of young adult contemporaries with lyrical writing and lots of emotional depth. There are trigger warnings with neglectful parenting, grief, and lots of talk of death and loss. Alix is a relatable character that makes the reader what to chase their dreams too while tugging at their heartstrings.

A coming of age story. Alix Leclaire is a young woman in Paris who is following her dreams and fulfilling a promise by attempting to enter the feather fashion industry. She is swallowed by a deep grief over the recent death of her best friend Jeanne in a car accident. Alix promised Jeanne that she would follow her dream of becoming a feather artist but she isn't expecting much when she asks for an apprenticeship at Mille et Une Plume. To her amazement something about her impresses Madame Salome and Alix is offered a position as a dogsbody with the opportunity to learn from the artists in-between doing menial tasks and errands. The salon quickly becomes a second home and she soaks up everything she can. After all, feathers are her life blood.

I admit that I didn't bond with any of the characters. They all felt a little off to me. I guess I don't like the torn between two lovers trope. Either date them both out in the open or pick one. Stop slinking around and trying to keep secrets. That wasn't the only instance of slinking either. Alix has some other issues with dishonesty. Can't say more than that without spoilers.

Having said that the writing was beautiful and I can see where the reader would be rooting for Alix to overcome her difficulties and find happily ever after - with a boy, with her career, and with life in general. The book was sprinkled throughout with French phrases that sent me to Google translate multiple times. Some I could figure out from context but others I needed a dictionary. Even though I wasn't the exactly right audience for this book I can recommend it to those who like YA romance or have an interest in fashion.

This is a story about grief and finding yourself after losing someone important to you. Alix has always dreamed of becoming a famous feather artist in the Paris fashion scene. After losing her best friend in a tragic accident, Alix swallows her fear and shows up at her local feather boutique and asks for a position. Luckily, she is taken as an intern, being trained by the handsome and irresistible Raven. As she advances in her sewing and wing designs, Alix’s grief begins to drown her, making her take more risks that her late best friend would’ve encouraged. When an old schoolmate, Blaise, comes into her life and has the potential to offer healing and solace from her grief, Alix pushes him away. As Alix struggles with designing the final set of wings for a play, everything finally falls apart around her, making her wonder if the risks were ever worth it.

If I Promise You Wings was beautiful and showcases the complexity of grieving a toxic relationship and struggling to define oneself after a lifetime of neglect. I read this book cover to cover in a single sitting - which has only happened to me on rare occasions. I was completely engrossed with Alix’s realistic story and her realization that processing her grief through art is the healthiest way to do so. Alix finding her self worth and standing up for herself at the end really frames her entire character arc very well. I absolutely loved Blaise and the ending was perfect. I really could find so much to love about this book, and I definitely recommend it!

If I Promise You Wings has a magical quality to it. It never quite crosses the line into magical realism, but it sure captures the feeling.

Alix has a natural talent for creating with feathers. She desperately wants to learn all she can, and she continually pushes herself toward her goal. But that goal is laced with grief. She sees her lost friend in the feathers, and that brings her both solace and pain. Alix is a compelling protagonist that quickly captures your heart.

Author A.K. Small has the ability to draw readers in. Even if you’re not initially sure what’s going on, you know you want/need to keep reading. Small brings Paris to life — even for those who have never been there. But where she excels the most is her handling of the feathers themselves. She brings them to life, almost making them characters unto themselves.

Small’s development of secondary characters helps the story feel less insular, and the love triangle is well played out.

If I Promise You Wings is a fast-moving YA novel that celebrates healing through creativity.

Sensitivity note: Themes of grief, parental neglect, and adult situations are present throughout, and sexual acts are alluded to in two places.

If I Promise You Wings by A.K. Small is a contemporary YA taking place in Paris, France. At its heart, it’s a grief story. Alix’s best friend, Jeanne, has recently died in a car accident and Alix is trying her best to move on while still being haunted by Jeanne’s memory. Alix goes to Mille et Une Plume, a feather boutique, and begins working for Madame Salome and competing with two other girls for an apprenticeship.

If you love Paris or Parisian things, this is absolutely the YA for you. Small is from the Sacre Coeur herself and uses French words and street names, making it feel very authentic and like you are in Paris.

Alix is shy and keeps very quiet, but she attracts people to her with her tattoo, her passion, and her talent. Raven, the boutique owner’s son, takes an interest in her very quickly but she also finds herself attracted to a bandmate of Jeanne’s, Blaise, who is also going through his own stuff.

I would recommend this to fans of a Parisian setting and for readers looking for a shier main character.

If I Promise You Wings follows the story of Alix Leclaire. An inspiring feather artist who recently lost her best friend, Jeanne, in a terrible car accident. In addition to the dealing with the grief from her friend death, Alix father is frequently absent and rarely sober. Things begin to look up when Alix gets a job at Mille et Une Plume a well known feather artist and is thrown into a world she only dreamt on being a part of.

This book was tricky for me to get into. The story read very much like its set in the past but there are little mentions of present day things. We (the reader) are in our main character,Alice, head/her point of view for the entire story. It’s written very lyrically and there are a lot of French words that made it a little hard to grasp what was going on.
However there were moments that I enjoyed. I loved reading about the feathers and the creations Alix made/helped make. I liked Alix relationship with Blaise and his Tante Constance. This book is very heavy at moments but there are bright spots scatter through the book that I enjoyed.

Huge thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy of this book!

personally, I didn't love it. it was like a book I read, waiting for the climax, or some sort of plot twist, and it just ended...unfinished? Alix's character seemed very naive, and even though she was grieving, that doesn't make her dumb, which I felt like she was at times. she kept secrets and just sort of watched the world crumble around her, and then, never mind! you were right Alix, I totally ruined this business! you were right all along, happy ending!
thats kind of how I viewed it. and maybe it's a me problem. after all, I don't appreciate this type of genre that much to start with, but it still felt like a total letdown!
The characters kind of lacked depth, in my opinion, and I felt like Blaise and Alix just kind of kissed and slept together, and that was it? didn't she technically cheat on crow? I'm unsure of their relationship. And though I didn't love the plot or ending, I did admire the writing and think it was beautiful the way the author wrote things. Even if I didn't like it, I'm sure it's someones favorite or cherished novel, I just didn't happen to get engrossed in it completely.

I received a Netgalley ARC for If I Promised You Wings I’m exchange for my honest opinion. These are my true thought about the boom.

I loved that unique take on magical feathers and using feathers for fashion. I have never read anything like it.
This book was a journey of self-discovery for the FMC. Alix is going through grief after losing her best friend. As a promise to her friends she pushes her self to apply to be an apprentice for a famous feather artist. She get hired on to start from the very bottom. She starts seeing the feather artists son. A little after she finds out that her best friend that passed away had an unknown friend whom she starts to hang out with and fall for as well. Will she get the apprenticeship? Who will she end up with?

This book was very good. I like that the author created problems that the FMC has to go through. The story was very beautiful and you get to learn about different birds and their feathers.

First, I want to thank NetGalley and Algonquin Young Readers for providing me with this beautiful e-ARC.

I love it so much. I couldn't stop reading it until I finished. The story about Alix is so inspiring. It feels magical and cozy with a little bit of darkness tint. I also love the trope of found family here. I could imagine all the wings they made with heart, how Alix connected with those feathers (she sometimes felt the feathers were alive). I also can feel Alix's grief for her best friend, Jeanne.

These are some quotes I like:
- "Being an artist means not being afraid of tackling everything, especially what we are terrible at."
- "Infuse the wings with what lives inside you."

I would love to recommend this book to everyone, especially if you like Disney's vibes!

A powerfully written coming of age and self discovery story about Alix LeClaire. Her mother left her and her father when Alix was a little girl. Her father is a musician and has been mostly detached throughout his life. Alix's best friend Jeanne has recently died in an accident and Alix is trying to figure out who she is.

She has spent her life thus far, defining herself by the experiences she has with other people. But now she's on a journey to figure herself out and find out who she really is.

A book that transports you to the street of France, imaging the shops and the ambiance as Alix wanders around the city in search of herself. Taking on the hope of an apprenticeship with the famous father artist, Salome. All Alix has ever wanted to do was work with feathers to create designs that speak to her.

"Dreams don't come to you. You have to go to them. You have to risk everything."

This is the capstone that Alix must learn - if she wants to achieve her dreams, she will have to risk everything. Even herself to find her moment.

Alix, our MC, has been reeling since the loss of her best friend. In her memory, Alex marches over to Mille et Une Plume boutique to demand an apprenticeship as it's a dream to work with feathers and create beautiful pieces for beautiful dancers. In this place, she finds a family (as her mother abandoned her long ago and her father most recently) and a love for two boys (not a fan of love triangles but I thought one didn't deserve her).

I liked Alix's growth from a timid girl who's trying to live her best friend's life as a risk taker to a girl who goes after what she wants even at the risk of all she's worked for. I love the magic of the feathers and how they seemed to "speak" to those that worked in this boutique. I did forgive her dad at the end and hope he keeps on the path he changed on.

This is a story of grief, dreams, and love set in the dreamy backdrop of Paris. You are immersed in the Parisian culture with French words peppered throughout the narrative, and museums and other cultural sights and sounds all making appearances.

As for the characters, Alix, only seventeen years old, has suffered abandonment and loss. It is through her art, feathers specifically, that she presses on. She becomes an intern at Paris’ premier feather boutique, where she constructs wings for the dancers at the Moulin Rouge. Alix finds two love interests - Raven is an artist like her, who is edgy and has his own tragedies. Blaise is more grounded and is from Alix’s past.

Besides the vivid setting, I felt this was a lovely story of Alix breaking free from her self-doubt and grief - learning to love and be loved.

I liked it. It's not so much a romance book as it is a book on dealing with grief. A lot of the characters in the book are going through something and trying to deal with their own problems. There is some romance in the story but it's not a crazy amount.

The book did make me want to work on my fiber art skills and it showed how to work multiple crafts together to make something amazing. I loved that.

I had a hard time with all the French phrases (liberally) sprinkled in the book. I don't speak French so it was kind of hard on me and pulled me out of the story a few times. I tried looking up what the French meant at first but I quickly gave up. The book is set in Paris, so there should be French, but it was hard since the book is English and then there is a bunch of French.

Overall, I liked it. Hope you enjoy!

Thank you NetGalley for the eARc!

There is a lot to enjoy here -- I love the stream of consciousness voice, the self discovery, and the Parisian setting. Teen romance readers will totally love the love triangle even though it is so obvious Raven is absolutely up to no good. There is an element of this being a dream fantasy of young adulthood (the lack of parents and scant mention of phones make this feel a little outside of time and reality). I wish I had connected with the grief story more but I think I needed more moments of Jeanne being a good friend for me to truly be sad she died. I will say despite the explanations, I was perpetually baffled by Alix's obsession with feathers. But this book is definitely a vibe, as the kids say.
