Tangled is the 50th animated feature produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. This gorgeous 3-D film offers a lighthearted twist on Rapunzel, the beloved fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm, complete with a daring heroine and, of course, seventy feet of golden hair. Featuring the stunning concept art behind the newest Disney masterpiece from sketches and character designs to storyboards and color scripts The Art of Tangled also gives readers an inside look at the film's fascinating history, which began over 65 years ago with Walt Disney's early explorations of the fairy tale.
I was a big big fan of the movie Tangled. Like, I loved it more than the average 6 year old girl. And I am now a big big fan of this book. Such fun to page through the gorgeous illustrations, and read more about the making of the film. I esp. liked all of Claire Keane's work. Glen Keane also had a lot of good stuff. And all the scenery.
*About Flynn's character* "Production held a whole meeting - the famous "Hot Guy Meeting" where all the girls came in and voted on all these...hot guys. ... after that, one kind of guy came up."
Really enjoyed all of the concept art in this book! It was really neat to read about the various sources of inspiration for the details in the movie and the animation similar to older Disney movies. Lots of sketches and such in here that are great for drawing practice. :)
Featuring stunning character designs, environments and story boards for - well, maybe the best animated film ever, the art is just incredibly beautiful. The margin's of every page are covered in Rapunzel's mural paintings and come on... it has Glen Keane, Claire Keane, graphite and digital art, sketches and paintings; what more do you need?
If I hadn't already been sure Tangled was the greatest movie of all time, this book convinced me. I got it for Christmas a couple of years back, and am still enamoured by it's beauty. It's brimful of the most stunning concept art and stories from the making of the film, and each page's margin's are decorated with Rapunzel's mural art. My favourite chapter is the one on the Tower, because that is where most of Claire Keane's art is, and the stories of how she came up with the wall art. But the whole book is just so gorgeous, and if you like Tangled and art at all {the two things usually go together!} then you must get this book. I promise you won't regret it! {If you do, I owe you some choc chip biccies}
This is a very beautiful book for Disney's 50th feature film, Tangled, which is also the first 3D computer-animated fairy tale for them.
The 160-page hardcover is filled with the very distinctive Disney style art, featuring character designs, environment and storyboards.
I love the beautiful character sketches and there are lots of them. Some of the character artists are Jin Kim, Claire Keane, Bill Schwab who drew really expressive characters. But much of them are drawn by legendary animator Glen Keane, and they really stand out with their lively action poses. It's fun to see the many expressions and tricks Rapunzel can do with her 70-feet hair. Other than Rapunzel, there are sketches for Flynn Rider (prince), Pascal (chameleon), Maximus (horse) and other characters like the bad guys.
As for the environment art, you'll get to see the familiar Disney towns and castles as interpreted by artists today. The design inspiration comes from previous Disney films like Cinderella, Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty. Some of the paintings from those films are also included. It's about translating what used to be 2D into 3D and you can read all about the challenges from the artists' interviews.
The change in medium for creating Tangled makes it feel like a totally fresh Disney fairy tale, yet it also feels like the older ones at the same time. It continues Disney's legacy in animation in a fine way.
This book is a treat to artists, animators and art lovers. A lot of great artists contributed to the art and unfortunately I can't name them all so you'll have to get the book to check out their work.
Most of the time I really enjoy art books based on movies, but I found this one to be quite underwhelming.
The best part of any art book is seeing how the look and style of the artwork develops over time, but this book contained mostly finished versions of the characters and settings. The only two characters who were different from their final versions (and who the animators experimented with) are Mother Gothel and Flynn Rider. I noticed that the sketches that were drastically different than the final versions were from artists who weren't as involved in the final versions, which seems to imply that some effort to consult outside the regular art staff was made. I figured for sure that there would be lots of interesting early sketches of Rapunzel (she is the main character, and they could have done a million different ideas with her), but her looks are basically a combination of Ariel's and Cinderella's. Yes, this is a nod to the continuity of Disney style, but it's just too easy! I would have liked to see how far they pushed the character at the early stages, and some of the concepts that did not make it as influences for the final art direction, if only to prove that Disney (the company, not the artists) is capable of thinking outside the box.
This was a bit of a let-down... it was an adorable book, full of back-story and rough sketches and sumptuous, stylized paintings of who Rapunzel and Eugene could have been. The text would reference hidden things in the pub or in the tower, but not show them. I operate under the life policy of "if you're not going to show then don't tell," so this was vastly irritating. The directors and artists talked of referencing Cinderella and Pinocchio, but the angles of the film always struck me as more Sleeping Beauty. All in all, a fun book, just not what I was expecting.
So many fantastic drawings are crammed into this book that it's kind of disappointing that the movie is computer generated. Unsurprisingly Glen Keane's drawings alone are reason enough to buy the book, but there are plenty of drawings by other artists which are equally inspiring.
The only complaint I have about this book is that I felt like it lowkey bashed 2-D art and Glen Keane who at the end of the day is the reason this movie even came to be no matter how much they say otherwise. In addition, I thought there would be more Glen Keane which is disappointing but it was still lovely obviously. There were so many sketches which I love seeing in books because it's so raw and sketches really inspire me to draw. I loved this movie because of both the story and animation, the 3-D was so spectacular that I really think it changed animation all together. Just look at Rapunzel's hair! I'm so inspired to start drawing right now because of this book <3
Beautiful book! The illustrations and design are amazing. Most of the information is pretty straightforward as it takes you through the creation of Tangled, but there are also a bunch of fun ancdotes in there. Definitely a must read for Tangled fans.
I love a good coffee table book, and I also love Tangled. So this is just perfect. The artwork is stunning, and I loved getting insight into how they designed all the characters and background art. (Now I’m going to have to restrain myself from buying all of Disneys “The art of ____” books.)
A REALLY GREAT ART BOOK FOR A REALLT GREAT MOVIE!!!! lots of character and story stuff, which i love, and in depth explanations of choices in these areas with a lot of art on every page. and all of that art was so incredible. a good one
This book is great for anyone who loves Disney or the behind the scenes look at how animated films are made. The book has stunning artwork from character designs to the Walt Disney world toilets which have been themed to look like the village In tangled. Honestly one of the best behind the scenes books I’ve read.
If you know me personally, you're probably very aware of the fact that I am obsessed with Tangled. I finally got to sit down and read through this stunning book and it's just so interesting to see how this movie I've been obsessed with came together all those years ago.
Turiu praktiškai viskas ART OF knygas apie animacinius filmus.
I love going through this kind of books. This one is beautiful and I honestly think that is the best one I have read so far. I have learn a lot about visual design.
