Archaeologist's Tools defines the basic tools used in the field by archaeologists. Straightforward definitions along with labeled images help kids understand the uses and value of backhoes, total stations, trowels and sifters. Simple sentences and tool-in-use photos will have young readers ready to get to work! Super Sandcastle is an imprint of ABDO Publishing Company.
A sad attempt at a book, to be honest. Rhyming books aren't even this repetitious. Every time a new tool that was introduced, almost every sentence that explained the tool also had the name of the tool in it. I'm talking four or five times in just as many sentences. It was ridiculous. If 'Sifter' is in bold letters at the top of the page, I think it's safe to say that all content below is related to the sifter. I don't need to be reminded it's a sifter in every sentence and neither does the child reading the book. It was a boring read and didn't even cover some of the more interesting tools, like brushes and sieves.
It gave a simple description of the tool used. Everything is labeled from the parts of the backhoe, to the shovel to the total station. Subtract points for some big words, such as callimator and optical plummet, with no explanation given as to what they are or what they do other than pointing to something in a picture. I also do not like the fact they give people names such as Quinn is driving the backhoe. Maybe it's an attempt to make it read like a storybook. I just am not feeling it. I was impressed with the match game and the tool quiz at the back of the book.
