Most Christians know they should study the Bible more but many find it confusing and hard to understand – let alone enjoy. In this classic book on Bible study, biblical scholar E.W.Bullinger provides a handbook for discovering, understanding, and enjoying the Bible's truths.
E. W. (Ethelbert William) Bullinger was born in England. A direct dissent of Swiss reformer Johann Heinrich Bullinger, a covenant theologian, he was born and raised in a home strongly influenced by Wesleyan Methodist doctrine. An Anglican priest as well as secretary of the Trinitarian Bible Society, he is primarily known as a theologian who published numerous books. He is most commonly known for The Companion Bible.
Some of his theology was and remains controversial, but there is no arguing that he had an in-depth knowledge of Aramaic, Greek and Hebrew. Some of his more popular books still in extant include his Figures of Speech Used in the Bible and Number in Scripture.
Interesting mostly as an indicator where popular theology was a hundred years ago. Like the modern stuff, Bullinger was convinced that only he knew what the Bible really meant. Him and God, that is.
What has been built upon this research and this book is incredible. This is a great book to open peoples eyes to how to actually read the Bible. So much tradition blinds people to what the Bible actually says. Building on what Bullinger began others have been able to get even closer to the accuracy of God’s Word and away from church doctrine. Great read.
I have known about this book for over thirty years. My greatest regret is that this is my first reading. I recommend this book to serious B ible students that are committed to truth over tradition. E. W Bullinger has earned my respect in this work of art and love.
Excellent reference for the Bible as a whole. Bullinger doesn't approach the Bible from any specific doctrine or set of beliefs, but rather, dissects it in it's entirety and explains the very principles he uses for the analysis. This book, which I mark as "read" cannot be completely finished without delving into the references themselves, so perhaps I should have it marked as "currently reading" and let it stay there for years!
You can get this for $.99 on the Kindle. He also wrote a terrific study bible called the Companion Bible. It is full of amazing, detailed references.
More about the author: "Ethelbert W. Bullinger was born before the Civil War... 1837 to be exact. He died just before World War One, in 1913. Bullinger was a true scholar, a "rare bird" especially in our day, and scholars sometimes have a way of making lasting contributions for generations to come. He was a direct descendant of Johann H. Bullinger, the great Swiss Reformer. His ardent Biblical scholarship was matched by his intense devotion to Christ. Like the rest of us, he wasn’t always right and he got plenty of flak in his lifetime and even more since his homegoing. Bullinger’s love of the Word produced a wealth of material for which any true student of Scripture can be eternally grateful.
His study Bible, The COMPANION BIBLE is unequalled as a wealth of helps to Bible understanding. If I could only own one study Bible, it would be this one. HOW TO ENJOY THE BIBLE is chock-full of keys to Bible understanding; every Believer should have it. His COMMENTARY ON REVELATION is written from a dispensational viewpoint and makes more sense than 50 other commentaries that are not. NUMBERS IN SCRIPTURE and THE WITNESS OF THE STARS are intriguing, and the student will appreciate such works as WORD STUDIES ON THE HOLY SPIRIT and GREAT CLOUD OF WITNESSES IN HEBREWS 11. Back in print but hard to get, is THE CHURCH EPISTLES.
