A concept book for young readers presents an interactive introduction to colors and shapes with boldly colored die-cuts of shapes through which familiar fruits can be seen, and includes rhyming clues that help identify the fruits.
Charles, N.N. What am I? Looking through shapes at apples and grapes (1994). This book goes over shapes, colors and certain types of fruit. This book is suitable for children from pre-k to kindergarten. This is a great book to be read as a whole class because of its question and answer format. Since the reader is to guess the type of fruit being described before turning the page it provides opportunity for children to guess and have fun. Thus, the reading process becomes a guessing game that may attract children participation. In addition, the cut-out square in the middle of the text matches with the format of the game; allowing hints for children along the way. Lastly, the colors and shapes make for great review for students. I recommend this book for its idea of audience involvement –making story time fun and engaging.
I used this book for a preschool storytime and the kids loved it! This is a great book to practice identifying shapes and colors, as well as a fun guessing game for kids!
