Watching: Scottish Short Stories

Rate this book
These insightful stories vividly evoke rural life in Scotland as seen through the eyes of the young protagonist. The immediacy of such details as riding a bike at speed, the ringing of a bell, the rituals of Halloween as well as the authenticity of the Scots language, all contribute to a powerful re-creation of a past age. In the easy flowing style one senses an artistic sensibility. "Edith Buchanan's work recalls a pastoral Scotland before the age of technology. In the musicality of the language one hears an echo of Lewis Grassic Gibbon, Jessie Kesson and the Canadian writer Alistair MacLeod." - Valerie Thornton, writer and creative writing tutor.

My Grannys wonderful book. A set of Scottish short stories. It was lovely to get a glimpse into life as Gran grew up (even though the characters aren't based on her they are clearly inspired by her experiences). The stories often have a twist I didn't see coming and a lesson to learn in each chapter. I shall be reading these again whenever I want to feel close to her.
