From the road to war to the long fight back, explore the seminal event that shaped the world we live in today. World War Two was the most destructive event of the twentieth century, and this small but unique history looks at the politics that motivated both individuals and nations. Along with fascinating trivia, quirky facts, captivating anecdotes, and compelling quotes, Jim Pipe discusses the war’s heroes and villains; the daring raids and great escapes; the soldiers’ lingo; life on the British homefront; and much, much more.
Jim Pipe studied Ancient & Modern History at Oxford University, then spent ten years in publishing before becoming a full-time writer. He has written numerous non-fiction books for children, many on historical subjects. He lives in Dublin, Ireland, with his lovely wife Melissa and his twin sons.
Great summary of WWII. What I liked the most about this book was the pop-up famous quotes,"fun facts", and popular myths/stories from the time. Writing is concise yet rich in content. It is a tiny book filled with knowledge.
Fascinating, very quick overview of WWII, with a bit of humor to keep it from becoming too overwhelming. The loss of life is truly staggering. Well written, filled with facts and interesting tidbits. Highly recommend if you want a quick, but we'll written, historical overview.
Excellent depth, with interesting trivia as well as fodder for deeper reflection. Brings out the underhanded dealings of countries largely painted victim by history (or the victors), such as the Swiss Banks financing Germany's armament and Russia's pact with Germany to conquer and divide Poland & surrounding countries at the beginning of the war. The trivia is really interesting, includes stories never heard before, such as accounts of desperate hare-brained schemes hatched all around, e.g. bats fitted with incendiary devices and dropped into enemy territory, under the assumption that they would fly into the attics and set buildings on fire. The second world war is unique, in its horror and its heroism. One such story of steely commitment to cause is of Japanses officer, Hiroo Onoda, who was commanded to engage in guerrilla war-fare in the Philippines, and that he continued to do till 1975, under the assumption that the war was still going on. It's a sad sad event in human history. Fascinating and heart-breaking. This tiny book captures it well.
Overall the book is very factual. It comprises of some of the fascinating facts and decisions made during the darkest pages of history i.e. World War II. The book presents the series of events in the form of a story rather than just plain timeline. This feature makes its interesting to read. I would recommend this book to people who like to explore history in very simple and fascinating language.
