This is more a 3.75 than 4, it's a real labour of love so I'd rather round up than down. The writing style is jovial but does start to grate after a while; there's a lot of odd jokes, bizarrely around the spelling of eastern European teams and also an odd amount of references to suicide. The research is really good though and actually driving to each ground to get a match is a big effort, even if the information inevitably dates it. If the author had gone with a regular chronology, it probably would have been dominated by the bigger clubs, so he really shows his passion by giving over so much space to smaller clubs. There's even a lot of information on the IFA years and provincial league beginnings of the clubs outside of Dublin, so he must have spent as much time in the library as on the motorways. I'd love to see an updated edition covering the many changes that have occurred in the last decade, hopefully the uptick in interest for LOI helps this book find a wider audience.
