Storm Boys #3

Touch the Lightning

Rate this book
Without a working office, Jeremiah is tasked with repairing the automated weather station on Oxley Island. It’s remote, only accessible by boat, and with there being a good chance of crocodiles, he’s dreading it.

Tully, on the other hand, can’t wait.

With a boat licence, his dad’s boat, and two days alone with Jeremiah—and with thunderstorms likely—to Tully, it’s another perfect adventure.

But their plans go awry when Jeremiah’s research gets far too close for comfort. Thirty years ago, the day his life was touched by lightning, he was changed forever.

It’s about to change again, only this time he’s determined to set things right.

“How, in this lifetime, this man was in love with me, I would never know.

But for some ridiculous reason, he was. I knew this fact all too well because he told me, with his whole chest, at least once a day.”

It's said lightning never strikes the same place twice, but in Touch the Lightning, N.R Walker weathers down Tully and Jeremiah's storm-chasing days with a beautiful and emotionally-charged conclusion. And where the title of the book, truly speaks for itself. ⚡⚡

“I should have told you every day,” he whispered.

“You can. Starting today. I’ll make up another chart and we can add gold stars for every time you say it.”

Tully is the epitome of the picture perfect boyfriend - man who loves with his heart and soul - there's not enough money in the world that will amount to how much love he feels for Jeremiah. He is effortlessly endearing, ridiculously swooning, and infectiously compelling in his sweet and caring affection. 🤍🤍 I laughed at all his playful endearments, his lovable flirtations and his puppy-sized heart that never wavers to show that Jeremiah is the one for him.

“Maybe it’s the memories that go with it. Meeting you, chasing storms, and falling in love. And you cooking that every night. They’re the best memories of my life.”

Jeremiah never seems to catch a break, does he? 🥲 It's even more of a challenge, because of his job - it can be tough and it can be dangerous, but one thing is for certain - he'll never have anything to fear with Tully at his side. Tully, with his overprotective streak, his fiercely warm embraces, that intense intimate way of just knowing that he cares - that he loves him - with all of that he has to offer. He and his family are a strong and supportive rock at his side - I love that we got to see some closure to Jeremiah's own side of the family and his job, too. He deserves some peace and happiness and my heart overflowed with how much Tully and his family proved to him that he was worth every inch of it. 🩵🩵

“Tully put his hand to my face and kissed me softly. He scanned my eyes, searching for something.

“Are they still blue?” I asked.

He grinned. “The bluest.”

When you've never had someone in your life worth saying 'I love you' to, it just might be the hardest job ever when you finally have someone to say it to. But, you'll do anything to say those words, when you think you might never have the chance to say them again. Tully and Jeremiah learn that the hard way - my eyes teared up a few times - more than I thought I would. 🥺 The heartache and pain was palpable, but so was the softness in their vulnerability and tenderness. It gave them the cherished precious feeling that you are safe and loved and at home in the arms of that one person that matters most to you in the world. 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

I adored the epilogue - so heart-warming and proving that no matter what storms they face, these storm boys will temper the lightning together. 🤌🏻 Oh, and lest I forget - more sexy times with heart monitors and adorable gold stars added to their charts for these two forever - they've earned it. 🥹🥹

5 full stars ... Perfect ending to yet another delicious N.R. Walker series. Always with the adorable, "opposites attract", yin yang relationships. Ms. Walker just knows exactly how to touch me just right in all the right places. 😏

Oh damn. I almost cried four times during this book. It’s not my favorite series by NR Walker, but I had a great time reading these books, though it took me some time to do it. The first and third book were definitely my favorite.

Jeremiah and Tully made such an amazing couple. I will always love the grumpy-sunshine couples and their banter made me laugh a few times. I was not the biggest fan of Jer in the first book, but I end up liking him at the end. Tully was a perfect match to him with his cheerful and open personality.

"How, in this lifetime, this man was in love with me, I would never know. But for some ridiculous reason, he was. I knew this fact all too well because he told me, with his whole chest, at least once a day."

I was skeptical about their love in the first and second book as they knew each other quiet short, but this one made made me believe they truly care and loved each other.

I’m also so happy with the ending. Especially the Derek and Paul one. I loved their novella.

I’m happy I decided to read this series as I end up loving the unique setting, the characters and Tully’s family. I can't wait to read more of NR Walker's books as I usually love them.

The inevitable happens in this book. I've been expecting it since book 1, so it wasn't remotely shocking.

The final installment of the The Storm Boys series is slower paced. The climax occurrs at 40% and the rest of book is about the healing.

Like in the previous books, the men, especially Tully, talk about sex incessantly, but there's little to no sex on page.

Tully is always funny and charming, while Jeremiah is dour and sarcastic. Jeremiah thinks he doesn't deserve Tully, and he's not wrong.

I have no idea how Tully and his family have time to do all the things while running a multi-million dollar shipping company. Magic, I guess.

I liked the storyline with Jeremiah's dad. I'm happy they were able to begin repairing their relationship.

Extra half star for the heart eyes 😻 epilogue.

I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, but I loved this conclusion. It’s such a relief when I can rate a book based solely on how it made me feel and without the need to overthink things. Maybe I’m just feeling a little soft and tender today, but this book stirred up some emotions in me that made it impossible for me to give it any less than 5 full stars. One minute I was sitting down to enjoy my morning coffee and read before work and the next minute I was running for the Kleenex. Tully and Jeremiah hit me right in the feels and I didn’t even see it coming.

This was the love story I was waiting for. The storm chasing and close calls and cyclones and pee drinking crocodiles were fun and scary and interesting, but the romance in the first two books tended to be overshadowed by everything happening around them and felt a little lopsided as a result. Tully had Big Feelings and Jeremiah had Big Fears and they never seemed to be fully on the same page, but there was so much going on that there wasn’t time to truly investigate why that was. This book was no less fun, scary or interesting than the others, but the slower pace of the second half gave their relationship room to breathe. It was in the quiet moments between the two of them, and with an altered perspective, that their love for each other finally began to feel balanced and solid and forever. It was emotionally impactful and beautifully written.

Tully’s family continued to put other families to shame with their undying love and support. Doreen continued to make me laugh with her amazing t-shirts. Mr. Percival made me want a pet bird (with free reign of the house and access to the sky, of course). Jeremiah’s dad, with all of his repressed emotions and social anxiety, made my heart feel all mushy. And the epilogue was perfection. Full circle moments get me every time.

I’m sad that this is the end of the Storm Boys series. I’m putting it on my overly ambitious re-read list so that I can feel fully immersed in their story without the breaks and memory melt between each book. Until then, I’ll miss these guys and their harrowing adventures.

PS - I would totally kiss a frog if I thought it would turn into a Tully.

This is one of my favourite series ever. Can't fault it at all.

I love Tully and Jeremiah, I cried so much in this one, but there was so much happiness too. Everything I love in a book.

I would definitely love to read more books about them, but this ended really nicely.

Absolutely recommend reading, especially if you're into Earth Sciences and the Northern Territory.

This story improved greatly by the the third book, Tully even became less annoying and a bit endearing. Maybe I’m just biased because I like Glen Lloyd’s voice, who knows? 🤷🏻‍♀️

4 stars! ❤️❤️Continuing the story of Tully and Jeremiah, this was the final installment with a nice epilogue. It was somewhat usual with the weather disasters and meteorological themes; but also more serious with a little angst when Jeremiah actually gets hurt. It has less steam than the previous 2 books, but has more sentiment and emotion. Overall it’s a good series, a little unique. Highly recommended!! 👍🏻👍🏻

3.5⭐️

At first, they were so annoying. Tully has a one-track mind—everything is sex, could be sex, or somehow an innuendo for sex. He’s sweet, though, and completely head over heels for Jeremiah after, like, a month. Calm down, dude!
And Jeremiah… oh, Jeremiah. Jesus. Just wake up already. How can someone be so meh? “I’m scared of frogs, boats, crocs, sharks. I can’t say I love you, I’m a bad boyfriend, why does anyone even like me?” 🙄🙄🙄

But then… yeah. The lightning struck—literally—and it was so scary and emotional, for both of them and honestly, for me too. I think, on the brink of everything falling apart, I realized they’re just two insecure babies trying their best. And finally, when their love aligned, it was beautiful. Seeing Jeremiah finally let his feelings show—loved that. Tully is such an incredible person, the perfect “husband.” 😅

And the lightning marks on Jem’s body? Sorry, Jem, but SOOOOO COOL! Lightning McQueen, indeed!

Also, I loved Tully’s family and Jem’s dad. I can’t even imagine living with that kind of nightmare following you your whole life. Jem growing closer to his dad was really emotional, and I honestly thought we’d move to Darwin with them, but I guess not.

I admit I was disappointed with the ending. It felt even more rushed than their love story. We spent a month going from when they met to the end of the book, and after Jem’s return from the hospital, we saw nothing of their new life together. One moment they’re on the couch feeling grateful, talking about no more storms but maybe being okay, and the next we’re in an epilogue two years later with just a brief aftermath of events.
I struggled with their connection because it all felt so rushed from Book 1, but just when I was finally loving it… *The End.* It felt like something was missing.

The end in the bunker was special 🥰 This wasn’t bad by any means, but it wasn’t very memorable for me either.

As the storm raged on outside, as rain lashed the walls and thunder rumbled low and deep, he made love to me. Slow and deep, he slid in and out of me, taking me to that place only he could. And when I was close, when my body was at the precipice, he froze. So far inside me, to the hilt, his eyes wide, and he licked his lips. “Lightning. Taste it with me.”
He crashed his mouth back to mine, giving me his tongue as the sky outside lit up with a symphony of thunder and lightning.
Just for us, the storm played on. Cymbals and drums, lights and song. Music only we could hear.
As it would for us, forever.

2.5 rounded up for now. This was a mixed bag but mostly a miss for me, this book but upon completion I can say the same for the whole series. Tully came off, to me, as very immature. Whether it be with his brother or the relationship. With his brother, calling him "nutsac" all the time was not that funny and he basically only talked about sex with Jeremiah which was too much and an impediment to the relationship development. They also talk about Jeremiah's work but it's mixed with sex too... We have followed those guys for 3 books (granted they are short but still) and they still mostly talk about sex, when they don't it's a contest to talk about who loves who the most. . The relationship lacked depth, both characters as well, when all the elements were there: the class difference should have been explored way more, at this point Jeremiah has moved across the country so the angst could have come from difficulties to get acclimated to this new environment or leaving his dad alone, very far away. I liked the plot point about Jeremiah's dad here, maybe my favorite part even though again it was a bit too easy. Tully is never at his job, he is always happy and able to drop everything to be with Jeremiah which does not seem sustainable. Yes, he helps when he is there but still.

I liked Tully's family, they were great but very different from how they were described in book 1 (this niggle was already present in book 2). The gender roles in this family are also not the best: in book 2 the mom has to be the emotional go-between Tully and his dad, and she is always cooking taking care of everyone. In this one, she packs food for our MCs (homemade and favorite dishes for both of them) before they go on their trip. I mean she is the co-head of a major import-export company how does she have the time?

Finally, the storm chaser part: both MCs supposedly bond over this love of storms but even in this book they stay indoors, away from windows when a storm is nearby. They watch another one but they should want to watch all the storms they can see if they both love it so much. Jeremiah is even afraid at this point (early in this story) which again doesn't make sense if they both love storms and lightning.

I really liked the epilogue, it was very fluffy and sweet so may not be for everyone.

What a fantastic ending to an very, very enjoyable series. I feel like this book was the perfect addition and wrap up for these two. It was frightening, funny, sweet and very emotional. It was just great.

This packed quite a punch and I loved every second of it. I've had such a great time with Jeremiah and Tully and I have loved all their adventures. I loved that there was a short epilogue that took us full circle, back to the beginning, with a touch of them in the future.

This was just a really good time.

This series feels like it is bit of an amalgamation of Red Dirt Heart, Imago and Missing Pieces. NR Walker trying to bring the magic back. It didn’t quite hit the spot for me but it wasn’t terrible. If this was my first read by this author I’d probably love it. The covers are gorgeous.

The 3 short books thing feels like it does a disservice to what could have been an amazing story because as a whole I really enjoyed this and my feelings for it grew. If the relationship grew naturally throughout the course of one longer book this could have really blown me away. Or even 2 decent size books each with a significant event happening.

I wasn’t too impressed by the first book which probably tainted my enjoyment of the series. I was tired by yet another use of the grumpy poor boy/sunshine rich boy scenario and ultimately knowing everything would end up fine because one of the MC’s is super wealthy which inevitably solves most problems (and has a too good to be true family who never appear to work). The action in book 2 and the drama of book 3 definitely saved this trilogy. I loved these events and the author writes natural disasters and medical emergencies well. The relationship was more satisfying by book 3 too. Once again though it ended kind of suddenly which is bizarre for a 3 book series (4 including the prequel).

This does end in a lovely way, I was hoping for some long lasting effects to make an appearance (impotence is common) but fear not, the fluff is strong.

A solid ending with a very happy Epilogue

I still don't see why this romance was split into three books as the progression occurred equally.

But that's obviously just an editorial choice and it didn't stop my enjoyment of the series as a whole.

What I really liked was the unusual setting and occupation of both men, Jeremiah in particular. I love reading about other parts of the world and different cultures and really loved all the weather geeking.

It's a very sweet romance, but it has enough heat to stop it getting sickly, which I always appreciate and I loved the secondary characters too.

All in all, a lovely read from Nic.

I’m just gonna paste the review I wrote for all three books 🕺 Loved book 3 so much.
______________________________

I really enjoyed these books, and actually enjoyed each book more, with the third one being my favorite (it has the most mortal peril so of course it was). I loved all the imagery and descriptions of the storms too. Really felt like I was there with them at times.

The dynamic between Tully and Jeremiah was fantastic. Tully is pure sunshine, full of love to give, a cross between a golden retriever and an adrenaline junkie, while Jeremiah is super proper, closed off, nerdy, and toppy as hell. There’s a lot of banter and fun, but it also builds in terms of emotional impact and more serious moments.

It’s really well balanced, wholesome, sweet, hot (NR can write great spicy scenes), and full of epic storm action. I will definitely listen again (book 3 especially), and highly recommend them ⚡️🌩️

There’s a prequel novella with a different couple you can read before this trilogy, but it’s not necessary to enjoy the main books. They make a little cameo but nothing big. I haven’t read it (yet) because I’m allergic to second chance 😌✋ (but it’s NR Walker so you know I’m gonna read it sometime because she’s got my trust lol)

Jesus. He adored my mother, and she had a real soft spot for him, but a compliment and a physical touch and a trip in a boat. He was going to need sedating.

Did I find it extremely attractive that he was so handy? Yes. Was the fact he could fix things a turn on for me? I was beginning to think it might be.

And that was probably the biggest difference between Tully and me. I grew up believing that to show any emotion was a sign of weakness. Tully grew up believing that love was the ultimate strength.

5 star series. Sweet, light, low angst, well written, beautiful characters. Excellent series, 3 books about the same couple, must be read in order, must read all three to get the HEA. Finding each other while chasing storms and coming together through thick and thin. Low drama, low angst, super adorable, very on-brand for this author.

Gah, I love this couple. Tully is so fun, funny and silly. Tons of great conversations and silly moments, I cannot adore a character more than I do this man. Caring, kind, considerate, loving, full of jokes and silly thought provoking questions. Love, love, love. And Jeremiah, such a sweetheart, full of so much love to give. The side characters and family are A+, they add tremendous value to the story. The brotherly rough housing and interactions with Ellis are excellent, the parents are supportive and lovely… and Doreen with her tee-shirts, absolutely fantastic. I think back on all the antics and just smile a huge smile of delight, memorable story and characters.

Contemporary, m/m, not a stand alone, book 3, lightning, storms, science, series, rich/poor.

This one has a much slower pace than the other book. I truly didn’t see the big event coming, and first I was a bit mad that it happened because it seemed too uncreative.

Then the healing started, and I could see why. Jeremiah did need a wake up call to make the necessary changes in his life. The part with his dad was touching and heartwarming. I also love the small part Mr. Percival played in their lives.

OMG!!! ALL THE FREAKING EMOTIONS!!!! I CRIED OKAY! I CRIED!!! I cried with Tully, I cried with Jem's dad, I freaking cried! In public and I didn't freaking care okay!

This series went from okay to good to great and you can't even fathom the level of feelings Nicole will bring out in you in this last book!

I loved everything about it! From Jeremiah's epiphanies, to Tully's realizations, especially when it came to his brother Rowan although no matter how much "growing up" he did he never lost his playfulness, to the amazing Larson family, to everything that had to do with Jem's dad.

Totally recommend this series! If you are like me and the first book was okay for you, keep at it, book 2 and 3 are INCREDIBLE!!!

3.5 ⭐ rounded up for that epilogue!

Tully and Jeremiah return for the third part and final novella in the dual POV Storm Boys series.

I like Tully and Jeremiah, but do have to admit I found Tully to be very immature at times (all the nutsac jokes with his brother and the constant sex thoughts get really old, fast). However, I love how quickly he always steps up to help and the way he always takes care of Jeremiah. I like Jeremiah's growth in this installment, but don't want to give too much away, and the epilogue was perfect.

This is the last book and closure of the story of the crazy storm couple. ⚡

The story picks up a bit later than the cyclone hit their town but not much changed for the MCs. Jeremiah's station is still out of commission, he is stressed that he will loose the job. And Tully is just being himself lol, while trying to comfort Jeremiah.

Jeremiah is sent out to check a remote island station which is wrecked by cyclone and somehow Tully not only manages to go with him but he provides the boat and sails it.

They get hit by a storm and unfortunately lightning hits Jeremiah, almost kills him. This was really stressful to read. Obviously he is one of the MCs and he can't die, but still.

I loved how Tully, while being the most immature person on earth, knows what to do in emergencies and keeps his calm. He transforms himself to the most mature and collected person. He literally saved Jeremiah's life.

He was the most supportive and loving care taker in the hospital. Literally one of best literary person! Of course along with his perfect family.

I wished we saw after hospital time, how they could juggle their relationship at home being in a difficult situation, and the jump between the hospital and epilogue was a bit too fast.

I was hoping to see more Ellis since they live together now, but disappointed most of the book was in hospital and we never saw their living situation lol.

Even though it was 3 books long and there was only one focused major event in each book, the whole series still felt rushed to me.

The storms, lightnings and crocodiles are not really my interests so probably another personal issue for me was that I couldn't feel much of the events and relate to the characters.

I loved seeing Derek&Paul and their happy ending.

Overall the series were sweet, no angst, no toxicity but all supportive and healthy relationship. It was a good read also I learnt a few things about storms and stuff which I always love while reading!

This was a good ending to Tully and Jeremiah’s story. The events that take place aren’t really surprising given the title and what these two men are so fond of doing. But I thought it was done well. The only thing I was surprised about was that the author spelled the German physicist’s name wrong. Georg Christoph Lichtenberg spells his name with an E and not a U as Ms. Walker has throughout the book. I know that she is big on researching when she writes her books, and this really surprised me.

The story moved along well and I like how things wrapped up well for everyone. I still had the same issue with Doreen’s shirts. I’m sure it was meant to be funny, but I don’t read MM books for things like that. But as they say, you can’t please everyone. There was also some back and forth with a doctor calling Tully by two different names. The author should have picked one and stuck with it instead of having it change a few times. I’m not sure how that wasn’t caught before publishing.

Overall, this was a good trilogy. Book two was definitely my favorite of the three.

Touch the Lightning was a beautiful ending to the Storm Boys series! It was a lot more emotional than the previous books, but I thought it gave depth to the story. I really enjoyed it and I'm glad Jeremiah and Tully got their happy ending. The epilogue tied everything together nicely and even gave us an update on the couple from book #0.5. I'd love to read more storm chasing adventures from this universe!
