About the author

I’ve been a Wiccan for 47 years and was involved in anti-defamation activism and hate crimes investigation for the Pagan community from 1986 to 2005. I am the author of the Law Enforcement Guide to Wicca, Witch Hunts, Wiccan Warrior, Full Contact Magick, Magickal Self Defense, Pagan Religions: A Handbook for Diversity Training, Modern Knighthood, How To Be Glorious, and Stand Like a Tree. I am the co author of a safety book for social workers and nurses: Safe Approach. I am also the author of Ancient Recipes for Modern Kitchens, a cookbook of ancient recipes. I was the former Preceptor General of Officers of Avalon, an organization representing Neo-Pagan professionals in the emergency services (police, firefighters, emergency medical technicians). I retired from the Vancouver Police Department in November 2005 after serving 29 years with them. I went on to be a police dispatcher and trainer for ECOMM for Southwestern BC, finally retiring from law enforcement in 2013.
I am the founder of a Wiccan order of Knighthood called the Order of Paladins in Sechelt, British Columbia. The Order of Paladins embraces the Warrior philosophies, precepts and code of chivalry outlined in my books. I am on the faculty of the Ardantane School of Magick.

Well-written guide to psychic self defense, gives both good and practical how-to information, as well as enhancing ones ability to work with energy, sense it, and determine what's a psychic attack and what isn't. Doesn't take a cookbook approach, and allows the reader to learn what works for him or herself.

I've read some of Cuhulain's other works and had very high expectations for this one. I went into it wanting to learn as much about wards as I could but that ended up only being one chapter (chapter 11, so close to the end it's almost not worth the wait). There's several chapters in here that I don't think ever get to the point. He talks about Vampires and how they suck energy from people. Then he goes on about how vampires have codes that say they should only feed on the energy of the willing. That's all well and good, but what do we do when we meet a vampire that doesn't follow those codes? How do we defend ourselves then?

I wish this book had focused more on the methods to ward ourselves than the list of things that either didn't work or could happen to attack us. I still really like Cuhlain and there are certainly things in here that could apply to me. But it wasn't great. If you are looking for a book about putting up physic wards, then maybe try another book first.

Very weak book, in my humble opinion. A lot of blame game and showing own erudition instead of trying to help. Constant digressions (reasoning, quotations and references to own books) are distracting and make this book tedious and difficult to read; it's like a facing a ton of ore in hope of finding something usable inside it, or peeling gigantic onion... While reading, one silently asks the author: "Well, now, how to?", just before facing another obstacle-passage. A real pity: the author has police and military background, together with Pagan and Wiccan, could contribute a lot. You may be interested to know his views just because of this, I did.

Peels aside, this is an energy and focus directing approach. No mystery, no religion, no spells.

For those who are not into leisure reading, but in dire need of help, I would recommend The Practical Psychic Self Defense Handbook: A Survival Guide by Robert Bruce and Protection & Reversal Magick: A Witch's Defense Manual by Jason Miller. Both, not either one, in that order.

If you know better, advise, please.

Took me a long time to read and after finishing it I see why. I was very excited to see Cuhulain's latest book when it came out, and the title was quite attractive. Search as I might, there was very little actual information or applicable techniques, and what there was seemed derivative. Author mentioned his other books too frequently and I felt "sold" to in many ways. Try his other titles and pass this one by.

I've read some of Kerr Cuhulain's books before, and I really got a lot out of Wiccan Warrior. This book, however, seemed lacking. While I agree with his premise that most times, a person is NOT under psychic attack from someone else, I thought his book was a little light on what to do if you actually are under psychic attack. The section on "pushing" and "pulling" energies was useful, but not much else.

He repeats himself a lot and at the beginning he makes you seem like you need to be in a mental hospital, which I'm sure beginner's might need to hear but if you're not a beginner, it's kind of tedious.
