Little Black Books #3

The Holy Spirit

Rate this book
We know that God is our heavenly Father, and we can wrap our minds around who Jesus is because he was a man who walked the earth. But what about the Holy Spirit? What is a 'spirit' anyway? And if the Bible says that the Holy Spirit lives within us as Christians, what does that feel like? In his latest Little Black Book, Scott Petty clears away the confusion many people have about the role of the Spirit in the Christian life. He "My hope is that by the end of this Little Black Book you won’t just be a believer in the Holy Spirit, but you will also understand who he is, what he does, and how fortunate and blessed we are to have him." About Little Black Books A new series of books that get straight to the point on the topics that Christians always have questions about. Not too big, not too fancy, and not at all boring. LBBs are ideal for young Christians (ages 14-20+), but speak biblical truths applicable to any age range. About the Author Scott is the youth minister at Christ Church St Ives in Sydney, and loves the tricky questions young people ask about the Christian journey. He also loves his beautiful wife, Carolyn, his three energetic sons, racing bicycles, Italian coffee, food in general, rock‘n’roll and Apple computers, probably in that order.

Simple, but with some humbling reminders.

(Don't come for me over logging a tiny book; I'm trying to actually finish my reading challenge this year 😝)

Generally, a very good, simplified look at who the Bible says the Holy Spirit is. Petty is a bit reluctant to land on a stance with gifts, which is a bit irritating, and his section on tongues is barely even about tongues (and completely skips over interpretations, all the while contending for why prophecies are great because they can be understood by the congregation!). Also, he seems to draw a weird correlation at times between the amount of examples of spiritual activity within the New Testament and how much we can therefore maybe expect the gifts of the Spirit to be active. But, I guess he's just trying to not cause any controversy with people who have strong views on this stuff. Everything he writes before writing on gifts, though, is excellent.
