Puuh-lease, you know I wouldn't just make my WHOLE Review one word. But let me elaborate off this word. This book was really RATCHET. And I'm not even the slightest bit surprise as to why it was ratchet because, TAKE IN THAT TITLE. A Thug's Life. A Thug's Life? Lord jesus have sweet sweet mercy. Now you all are probably all wondering, why the hell, am I reading this kind of book? Like this doesn't even fit in any of the genres and categories that I usually read. But, at the end of the day I read any kind of book, doesn't really matter as long as it's interesting and speaks to me. Now let me tell you, ratchet, is not a synonym of boring, so you know this book was on and poppin! In some parts... again don't get it twisted. Now some of you ask, how in the world did you even end up reading this book though? Well it was the last day of exams and you know we were all done school for the year, its summer break BRAP BRAP BRAP BRAP, BOMB BOMB, let's go swimming. EEERRRKS! I have hair issues. But yeah, my friends and I , were all hanging around the cafeteria area, and I notice my friend had the Second Midnight book, which is Sister/ Sista Souljah book and I read the first one and LOOOOVEED IT. But, my friend had to give it baack to library cuz she owed money or whatever. Then she was like, "Press you should read this book", *gives me the book "A Thug's Life*. Then I obviously get ratchet and be like " I hate those typical basic drug dealing type black people books, they're so you know", then she was like "NOOO, this book is really good read it". So I decided let me take it and read it, why not. So that's the story. The back story of the book is basically about a drug dealer named Dayvon who is ballin like no tomorrow. Get's girls, lives the high life etc. But there is one girl, that he's kind of tied down to, named Jare (Jarey). She is this like pretty Puerto rican, boriqua, beauty that has a great bum and she's a stripper. This review, oh lord. Anywho, Dayvon and Jare have a real love connection. Then Dayvon , has this whole idea that he wants to get out of the game because, he feels that he has enough money or whatever. So his business partner, the maniac of them all Ty is in jail. And he decides to visit Ty and let him know wa gwan. Ohman, I crack myself up. Basically let him know, he wants out the game. SO, he tells Ty and Ty goes CRAZY and gets all mad, calling him a snitch etc. Then the DRAMARATCHETNESSS, unfolds from there. Dayvon, I thought he was alright at first, but he was kinda dumb too. Like he came from a rich family, nice home, and grew up good with so many oppurtunities, then decides to deal drugs... Like wtf. I started to hate him because, he became crazy with killing and using people because of what Ty did to him. I mean, revenge is one thing but, he took it too some outerspace black hole never come back from it typa level. Jare, she was annoying. I liked her struggle though, she was in school, single mom, while being a stripper by night. So Jare goes through a lot in the book, and cuts herself from Dayvon because she gets shot due to him, and in the end she calls him to get out of the hell hole she put herself in. I didn't like that she went back to Dayvon, but in the end, they were "in love", so why not. Ty,he's crazy as Sycho Bob from Simpsons, and needs Jesus. He, I can't even speak, like how are you in jail making threats. Ohlord, society. So I'm happy he get's his in the end, but I feel bad for his son. That he obviously didn't really care about. All the other characters were just crazy and ratchet too, and theres not much to say but the typical. Things I didn't like.I didn't like the way, the book was written. OMG that bothered me. It was like Dayvon's pov, then Jare, then Ty, then back to Dayvon, but then for every other chapter it would be third person, even if it was Ty thinking. Like wtf, you may not understand what I mean, but the book made no sense either. I also didn't like all the killing, and there was WAAY too much sex descriptions. Like tone that ish down. I hated realizing that this book is the reality of actual people out there in the hood. It like saddened my heart. I also hated Ty, because he was a maniac and psychotic. Things I liked. I liked the humour of the book, the love between Jare and Dayvon, the ghetto-esques style, the tunes they mentioned in the book. They bump for real. And I liked the character Pooh, he was my fave but let me tell you! THIS NI- I mean THIS MAN WAS NOT REAL. Chocolate brown guy with green eyes, perfect build, handsome etc. Only in books I swear. Like where did Pooh come from. His real name was Tamir, so I'm guessing he's Arabic, but I could be wrong. But yeah, Pooh was my boo. Loved him. Overall the book was ratchet, but it did teach me a lot about youth in the hood, and the struggles they go through that no one necessarily knows. I recommend it people who are educated about gangs, hoods and people who live in the hood in general. Because, if you're not you'll read this book and come out ignant. Not even ignorant but ignant. A Thug's Life, was filled with ratcheness, but I was pretty interested. Thomas Long, work on your writing skills, and deuces till the next review. XOXOX Pressillest.
Dogs For Life one of the most feared YET respected crews in West Baltimore. Created, and strongly influenced by two young Brothas; Dayvon (thorough in thought) & Ty (tight murder game) both leaped into the game as boys pledging their lifetime membership or "until death!"
Dayvon Freeman was anything but your typical street hustler born in the hood. Dayvon was privileged with two parents, a nice home, the right schools, and the capacity to do great things. This self portrayed black sheep took to the streets, and never looked back.
Tyrone Adams was a victim of circumstance. Son to junkies killed because they couldn't pay their drug tab. Ty's only relative his Uncle one of the OG's from B-more help put HUSTLIN' on the map. Tossing Ty out into the streets early he grew to love the drama, and was built for warfare.
Now Dayvon & Ty were men. As leaders in DOGS FOR LIFE they had major success in the streets. Strong 10 year run, prosperous to the entire family. A family that was at MAXIUM STRENGTH. When you've gotten all that you can what else is left?
Sitting tight on a three year bid. Ty recognizes that THUGGIN' was definitely just his be all that ends all! Dayvon, sees the possibilities of what his wealth could afford him and wants to move beyond THUGGIN'.
In the blink of an eye DOGS FOR LIFE would plummet down from its manifesto of love, only to be overthrown by major disloyalty.
Along with money, and fame...comes a hefty price of pain!
A Thug's Life is an experience of urban tension. Leaving the individual reader with the opportunity to glimpse each character as they elect to live a certain way including the consequences that goes with their choices.
To be honest, I was skeptical about reading this book. The cover on the copy I had looked kind of low budget (which is different from the cover above), and I didn't want to be disappointed like I have been with some other urban fiction books I've read. I couldn't have been more wrong. This book was really good! I loved Dayvon as a character. He seemed to really have peoples best interests at heart despite his thuggin lifestyle. Ty was a jerk and he got everything he deserved with his grimy self. This book kept me interested right up until the end. I loved all of the little twists and turns the author threw in there. I am so glad everything ended the way it did! This was my first book by Thomas long, but I would definitely read another by him. This is a great book overall and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good action packed thriller!
Having the advantge of always wanting to know whats going to happen next is the key to this book. Turning from page to page, reading more and more to see whats happening next will have u in suspense. A Thug's Life will have you going crazy from all the revenge, money, drug and deception. Although it may seem sterotype, it will seem like your looking out your eyes.
