Wow! Not only do we NOT physically need 8 hours of sleep a night, but when we're tired it's not usually due to lack of sleep and we actually have control over our internal "sleep-0-stat". Experts have known for years that after 5 hours of sleep roughly (depending on the person), we are physically restored, and that the additional 1 - 3 hours of sleep that most of us take is "superfluous".

With a little knowledge and retraining, most of us can add an extra month of living every year by managing our sleeping patterns, and come out ahead with more energy! This is a well researched book on the mechanics of sleep, the absolute arbitrary choice in the western world of an "8 hours a sleep" maxim, and what you can easily do to gain an extra hour or more each day to improve the quality and balance of your life. I am a changed woman because of this. Quick read - highly recommend.
