" This is only a loan. All of it. Once you are gone it all goes to another. And once they are gone another still. Your time has come, Everyman. I am here for you." Though short, this play gives you a big deal to reflect upon. It opens your eyes, spiritually, to things you've chosen to turn your back on, or simply chose to ignore, though you're well aware of their existence. This play is the story of Everyman, the descendant of Adam; it can be any man really. It brings to your attention that we are mortals- a fact that we sometimes forget. At the end of the day, not our belongings nor our beloveds will follow us during the journey that is reckoning; it's everyman for himself, literally. It is only our good deeds that follow us, it is all that matters.
I have heard OF this play often, but had never actually read it until this year, for school with Dempsey. It is a short little play about a man who must face death. Like most of us, he is not ready, and tries to find a companion to go with him on his journey. Since this is an allegory, he entreats various characters such as Goods and Kindred to go with him. None will accompany him. He does penance for his sins; Good Deeds arises and is willing to join him. Strength, Discretion, Beauty and Knowledge go along for a while, but just as in life, everything but Good Deeds leaves him in the end. Since he believes in Jesus, he has nothing to fear when he meets Death. So live a good life, people! And put your trust in Jesus, nothing else!
A pretty good morality play. It's very Catholic, of course most works in this time period were. It's about the journey of Everyman (everyone in the world), and his quest for salvation.
