Angela Terry's third novel, The Palace at Dusk, kept me company during a very long week, as it was my first time in the ring with Covid. Jae felt like a friend, albeit one who made some questionable choices for her life. This novel shows the gritty and not-so-glamorous sides of having an affair and being a lawyer. Plus, it was an armchair adventure in San Francisco.
I didn't know where things were going to go from one moment to the next and that kept me turning the pages. I also felt angry and frustrated on Jae's behalf many times. While I don't condone affairs, it was interesting to see what the experience was like for Jae and to learn why she would choose that path for herself. I also understand why it was difficult for her to end the affair. And her corporate law career was cutthroat and intimidating, to say the least. I felt bad for Jae when she was being undermined at work.
My only concern is that I felt like Adeline Turner (who was the protagonist of Angela's previous novel) seemed more standoffish and a bit rude in this novel. I can't remember how Jae was made to look previously, but it seemed like Jae was trying to be friendly to her in this story and Adeline wasn't reciprocating.
Overall it was both honest and gripping and I had a hard time tearing myself away. It's definitely a worthwhile and riveting read. Also perfect for fans of the TV series Partner Track. I am eagerly awaiting Angela's next novel!

I was hesitant to select this book at first as I don’t like the cheating trope, since I don’t condone it. However, I thought I’d give it a chance, as the summary seemed to hint at character growth for Jae and I was curious where it was going to go. The book is split into 3 parts.
Part 1 is the affair, where Jae and Brad (the name should have been a giveaway really) start going on bar dates and get intimate, only for her to find out he is married and has a (very small) kid. Brad exudes a lot of red flags and manipulative behavior that I was repulsed by, as it reminded me a lot of toxic exes. Nevertheless, I figured it could only go up from here (hopefully) for Jae. This was her rock bottom in terms of relationships.
Part II flashes forward 7 years. Jae is still tied up in her affair with Brad and realizes that she’s wasted her prime dating years on a man who was never really going to leave his wife. Wanting more for herself, she decides to leave Los Angeles and move up to San Francisco where her law school friend Maya, lives and works. However, a couple of personal life road bumps hit on her move to San Francisco, causing Jae’s life to unexpectedly change as she tries to adjust to life in a new city and at a new firm. She also embarks on a new relationship with Matt, who had initially asked her out on a date 7 years ago (Part 1). The timing is about as right as it could get for them and Matt is so sweet.
Part III, I won’t get into much as Jae makes her choices here that basically decide the rest of her life. I will say that it did frustrate me a bit, but that I also understand. There was the character growth that was promised and also showed me that love in books does not always have to be so straightforward.
I thought this book was really well written and I did enjoy it! My criticism is of the characters, not the book/author/writing . I think this is the most I’ve ever written of a review 😂 I just had a lot of thoughts. Thank you Love Books Tours and Angela Terry for the copy, I really loved it!

Jae's attraction to Brad put her in a difficult position, especially when she discovered he has a wife and child.
Jae needed to carefully consider her options and the impact of her choices on everyone involved, including herself.
Ultimately, finding a resolution that brought happiness and fulfillment to Jae's life required a deep exploration of her own desires, values, and priorities.
Jae had to trust her instincts and make the decision that lines up with her own happiness and well-being, while also considering the potential consequences of her actions.
This was a new author to me and I really enjoyed the story.
Although I’m not a fan of the cheating trope the story around it made it easier to read. I’d love to read more of this authors work in the future

I struggled to connect with the characters. This book showcases an on-again off-again romance and questionable life decisions and truly shows the messiness that life can be.

The book moved fast— I was hooked right away. However I feel the author rushed some important details and left them out. Overall, I liked the story, it just had a sort of unbelievable timeline.

I understand love and what Jae must have been going through, but I really was excited when she decided to make a move to break things off. I would have loved to see that book, and see her really work to get over these feelings. Instead, he messy married ex-lover Brad kept hanging around. I thought she’d seen the light… but they weirdly got their happily ever after. The real lesson of this book should have been that Jae didn’t need a man, especially a married one.

This is a tale of love overcoming incredible odds. As well as a tragic comedy of errors – which the main character points out herself. And all of this is wrapped up in a unique romance story.
The use of infidelity as a storyline is a controversial trope that some love and some hate. Ms. Terry uses it here to to explore other deeper issues like insecurity, our ability to lie to ourselves, and the double/higher standards that society holds women to. She sets this drama-filled, heart-wrenching love story against the backdrop of a big law firm, adding intrigue and secrecy. At first, Jae and Brad have to hide from their colleagues. Then, she finds out he’s married. She wants to do the right thing. But the heart wants what it wants.
I don’t read or watch many courtroom or legal stories, so it was interesting to see this ambitious young woman climb the ladder while dealing with these other huge personal issues. In some ways, this seemed the perfect romantic setup for her, leaving her free to have a relationship without too much pressure and free to really be married to her work. As a young professional woman, this is a big problem. We have to do it all – be 100 perfect at everything. The best mom, employee, wife, etc. So in some ways, maybe Jae had it figured out. But hearts don’t listen to practical things like that.
The story that Terry has weaved is messy and complicated. Jae and Brad’s decisions left a bad taste in my mouth, and I didn’t enjoy the ending. It was a happy ending, but not the one I rooted for. I didn’t feel like Jae and Brad grew as characters, but that might be an unpopular opinion. But that’s how real life is sometimes. We don’t like how it turns out, and Ms. Terry has written a realistic, messy, human book. I also really didn’t like Maya, or how Brad’s wife was treated in the narrative. However, both of those situations were realistic in life.
My favorite character in the book was Matt. I adored him. I’m too old for book boyfriends, but if I wasn’t, he’d be the one I picked. He reminds me of my husband.
To me, this book really showed the dangers of isolating yourself and focusing too much on work instead of building a community. Considering that’s something I have been guilty of in the past, I felt like it was a bit of a “Christmas Carol” type warning. I’m not sure if that’s what the author was going for, but I still appreciated it as such. I appreciate when romance is just a fun ride, but I also really appreciate that romance can have social commentary embedded within its pages. That’s not just for the sci-fi and fantasy folks! And I’ve noticed an uptick of that lately.
All of that is about the characters and the story. The writing was great. Ms. Terry weaved an amazing story, even if it was extremely frustrating to me, and her writing and storytelling were great.

How many of us have been cheated on before? Or have cheated ourselves in any way shape or form? Its real life right, it's heartbreaking, sometimes life shattering, but it not uncommon and it happens more often than not.
The first thing that drew me to this book was its cover and its beauty. I skipped reading the book blurp and simply chose it because I fell in love with the book cover and its colors. But if I am being completely honest I am glad I went in blind because I probably would not have given it a chance or would have had preliminary negative feelings if I had read the tropes or blurp of the book.
This is not your typical friends to lovers, office romance. It's a messy, super complicated love story between two people who are cheating. Told from the POV of Jasmine (the other woman). Yes you read that right. THE OTHER WOMAN!
This book is broken into three parts:
I. Their love affair and finding out he's a married man.
II. The "consequenses" and years she wasted in a relationship that clearly made her realize he would never leave his wife and would always be the other woman.
III. Jasmine trying to find her happily ever after.
There's a whole lot of twist and turns in Jasmine and Brads relationship. Each one getting worse and more complicated than the last. I did not 100% agree with all of Jae's decisions and most of the time I found myself annoyed at some of Brads actions and internally yelling at Jasmine to run as fast as she could from Brad. The drama was so real and raw and some shocking events completely broke my heart for her. She did not have it easy for sure but I'm so glad I dove in and read this because the book itself its so worth reading.
Since I don't really want to spill more than I should I will leave it at that. But in all honesty, to all my fellow book worms who are in search of an unconventional love story, this is the winner right here. Give it a chance like I did, I promise you're in for an emotional rollercoaster but worth every page turned, and impossible to put down because you're just gonna want to know how it all ends.
P.S. I did really wish for a different outcome involving Matt (but thats just me).

The last thing I want to do is glorify cheating as romance - but the beauty of this story is that I don't even really consider it a romance. More like a peek into the minds of people who are truly emotionally damaged/don't know how to live a healthier lifestyle.
WILL ROMANCE READERS LIKE IT?
--There's a deep level of heartbreak all around us every day . If you're a romance reader like myself and only want to read the HEA endings and pretend that cheating, lying, and betrayals don't exist... this will be a harder read, but I think the style is somewhat necessary. In a way - after reading what people put each other through - I'm more invested in my Regency romances, contemporary romances, etc, because I see how easily that could all be taken away!!
THOUGHTS:
- When I read the book's premise, I really thought I wouldn't like the main character Jasmine "Jae". How could anyone empathize with a homewrecker? To spend years with someone who doesn't belong to you - it seems appalling? I ended up liking her character, though, because I felt like she grew so much from a newbie professional employee to grown woman looking for a way to be emotionally whole/respectful to the people around her.
- Nowhere does this book justify being unfaithful to one's partner. As I've learned in life - you can explain your choices without using that explanation as an excuse. It's simply what it is - right or wrong - these are the facts.

The Palace as Dusk was such a captivating novel; the author developed the main characters beautifully! I felt as though I knew them and each of their personalities—without feeling like I had a ton of unnecessary filler information. I LOVED her writing style. I found it easy to read and concise (this is so important to me—too much verbiage and I zone out). Terry provided the perfect amount of information/description. Also, I love that this book had just a FEW main characters, much easier to keep track and stay absorbed in the story. 😅
This book is organized into three parts—background/beginnings of an affair, 7 years into the affair, and Jae’s happily ever after (but with WHO?? 😉) I could honestly go on and on about The Palace at Dusk, but I don’t want to spoil anything for those who may have it on their TBR (and if it’s not on your TBR…ADD IT NOW…you will not regret it). 👍🏼
If you are looking for a book that is going to make you feel all the feelings, then this one is for you! #emotionalrollercoaster
Terry did an amazing job representing multiple aspects of a women’s life and real struggles that we go through, such as people making you feel like you need to choose between a fulfilling career and a family, trying to ward off an office romance, and dealing with unexpected pregnancy/loss.

The Palace as Dusk was such a captivating novel; the author developed the main characters beautifully! I felt as though I knew them and each of their personalities—without feeling like I had a ton of unnecessary filler information. I LOVED her writing style. I found it easy to read and concise (this is so important to me—too much verbiage and I zone out). Terry provided the perfect amount of information/description. Also, I love that this book had just a FEW main characters, much easier to keep track and stay absorbed in the story. 😅
This book is organized into three parts—background/beginnings of an affair, 7 years into the affair, and Jae’s happily ever after (but with WHO?? 😉) I could honestly go on and on about The Palace at Dusk, but I don’t want to spoil anything for those who may have it on their TBR (and if it’s not on your TBR…ADD IT NOW…you will not regret it). 👍🏼
If you are looking for a book that is going to make you feel all the feelings, then this one is for you! #emotionalrollercoaster
Terry did an amazing job representing multiple aspects of a women’s life and real struggles that we go through, such as people making you feel like you need to choose between a fulfilling career and a family, trying to ward off an office romance, and dealing with unexpected pregnancy/loss.

First off I was massively attracted the absolutely beautiful cover of this book, the blurb then left me thinking this was definitely a bit of me. I will be honest though and say I don't know what the relevance of the book title is.
As this started, I was totally addicted, I loved the characters - despite thinking I should hate this relayionship! I was intrigued by where the story was going and found the pacing and setting fit perfectly.
When Jae moved to San Francisco, I thought it strayed a little from this, I had lost my love for Jae and Brad, I actually really hated him. I also started getting a little confused by the American legal terms, different types of counsel etc so when Jae was talking about her future in work I tuned out a little.
I really felt for Matt, he was such a great character, supportive, kind, and loving, I really wanted to shake Jae a lot!
There was a happy ending, its not the ending I'd have chosen, id have loved for Jae to accept that she had been treated appallingly and grown up and found a healthy relationship. However, that's my personal preference. I love when a book is rounded off nicely with a happy ending.

This is the story of Jasmine, "Jae" a young lawyer at an LA law firm who falls for the handsome charms of Brad, a fellow associate. He's handsome, pays close attention to her interests and preferences, and seems perfect. Until he confesses that he's married. Torn between what feels like big love and the fact that he's married and has a child, Jae has to examine her life and ask herself what does she want in her own life.
This was an interesting read for me because I'm new to the cheating trope. I liked that this story was told from Jae's POV, so we see how torn she is and how she really struggles with her own feelings and desires throughout the novel. I actually briefly dated a guy until I found out that like Brad, he'd neglected to tell me he had a longtime girlfriend. So I liked that this story showed how messy and complicated life and love can really be. Jae's life gets complicated, she isolates herself from so many of her friends and family and that rang really true. I didn't agree with all her decisions, but I liked Jae and spent a lot of the novel wanting to give her a hug. And maybe suggest some therapy 🩷

Having devoured Angela Terry’s first two novels, she is now one of my “go to” authors. The Palace at Dusk features the same beautiful writing as her other books but it’s less of a rom-com, taking a more serious tone and a deeper dive into the inner turmoil of her protagonist who finds herself embroiled in a serious office romance. I enjoyed learning about what it takes for young attorneys to succeed in the fascinating and demanding world of big law where Jae and Brad meet as they are establishing their careers and climbing the corporate ladder. Having an affair with a married man might have been a plot trope with a less skilled writer, but with Terry’s skilled storytelling, the complicated love story made me empathetic for both Jae and Brad. Love isn’t linear in real life and that’s certainly the case in The Palace at Dusk. I enjoyed watching Jae grow and evolve in a realistic way and was rooting for her on every step of her journey. Terry does a great job of capturing the essence of San Francisco too and it was fun to see the characters living in and exploring one of my favorite cities.

She is a workaholic with a lackluster dating life. She even has a no-dating-coworkers policy that's tested and eventually broken. Brad Summers -a handsome real estate associate-asks her out for a drink and they eventually start dating. Little does Jae know that Brad has a wife and child. Jae goes through a lot of moral dilemmas leading a double life with Brad. These "entanglements" never end well. My father was married with a wife and 3 kids, but it wasn't enough. He ran through his office, abusing his power, and sleeping with women. Everyone knew except his family at home. He was so selfish thinking about himself and his needs. He thought financial support was all he needed to provide. Jae and Brad circumstances are different, but the feelings of guilt, desperation, and love are all the same. I was triggered by the story but felt Jae's struggles within and her fight for a HEA.

This book has such a lovely cover and immediately drew me in and I went into the story somewhat blindly - I'm glad I did because the 'cheating' trope isn't usually one I'd choose to read and it may have put me off had I known this was a theme in the book before I started. At times I found myself frustrated with Jasmine and was begging her to run a mile from the man but I did enjoy reading an unconventional romance novel.
The writing is easy to read and paced really well throughout and there is a clear character arc which helped me to stay engaged with the trope. I would heavily suggest you check your trigger warnings before reading as there are some really emotive subjects discussed.

This is a beautifully written story with a somewhat unusual and unforgettable plot. This review is more of dissecting the actions of the characters rather than a critique of the author’s writing.
It follows the story of Jae, a successful attorney, who is having an affair with her colleague.
I enjoyed the way the story flowed, the narration was good. I was vested in the story and keen to know what path each character will take.
This book had me pulling my hair several times and made me feel like a participant in the show ‘Google Box’.
This book is a classic example of the demeaning position women put themselves in. I felt Jae could have made better choices and decisions, regardless of whatever nonsense Brad sprouted to her.
I feel the author could have let us have Brad’s point of view as it feels like he was stringing her along and only did the right thing when it was convenient for him to do so.
If you are looking for an unconventional emotional, roller coaster read, then I recommend this.

This is the first book that I have read by this author but it certainly wont be my last. It was well written with a compelling story line that had me feeling claustrophobic at times and well developed characters that practically jumped off of the page.
The story follows Jasmine or Jae who is A young lawyer at a firm in LA who has a strict no dating people she works with policy, however she abandons that policy when Brad asks her out, and she really likes Brad he seems perfect, other than his secret family that is.
I haven't read many romance books with the cheating trope in it, rather it has just been alluded to as a reason someone is single and not keen on the idea of love, however, with this book it worked really well. It really showed the toxic and complex nature of loving someone who also has other people/priorities in their life.
This was a heart wrenching read at times and it was also uncomfortable at times, there are so heavy topics explored in the book, but that is part of what made it so good.

This is such a difficult book for me to review as although I absolutely detest cheating and infidelity, I just couldn't help but love our characters and their story!
Jae has a rule to never date colleagues, but when Brad appears in her office asking her for a drink, she can't resist seeing how things might pan out.
The book is split into sections - the before - 7 years into he relationship - the end - will it be happy or otherwise?
Our main characters were so well presented that they jumped right off the page and embedded themselves in my heart - so you can imagine my horror, to find that Brad was married with a child! I was devastated and really wanted to judge both of them, but it was too late.
Although after some time, Jae did fight with her morales and her heart, which was a small saving.
Even though I wasn't keen on the situation, this was so well written and the storyline flowed well.
The topics explored were not uncommon in this day and age, so important that they be included in fiction.
I actually found this quite emotional at times.

While this deals with the cheating trope, and it’s not a trope that I love, I believe these situations are very real to life. Told in three parts, we know how everything started between Jae and Brad and how things progress. While I did struggle with Jae as a character (not due to the writing, but due to her being the other woman), it was nice to see her progression of growth. And while she was emotionally growing, her career growth seemed to go in the opposite direction. But she eventually brings it around and it was nice to see that as well.
It’s hard to trust your instincts and Jae had to learn to do just that. It’s hard when you love someone to make a decision with your brain instead of your heart and Jae has to learn that as well. I really felt Jae’s internal struggle.
Now, with the trope aside, if there was no cheating to make me feel eh about Jae and Brad, I would have loved their love story. It is very well written and you could tell that they love each other. This was a very good read.

Wow, this was a very toxic read. This book follows Jae who wants to become a partner at a law firm but meets Brad. They sleep together but it turns out he’s married. I did not read that part of the summary and wish I did. I’m not a huge fan of the cheating trope especially as it gives off some major red flags for the character. The story was greatly written though with a good storyline and heartwarming moments. I enjoyed the main character Jae as I thought she was well-written but I did not enjoy her character development. I was not a huge fan of Brad so I will leave it to that. I didn’t truly care for their romance and this book gives off that vibe where Jae could have been left alone. Not a bad read though if you enjoy Sex/Life and Maybe In Another Life, this would be your read.

The personal growth from our FMC was very much needed. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and appreciated her pursuit for her own HEA through it all.

I was torn about this book. I know that young, high potential professionals are driven and Jae's situation wasn't unusual. She didn't know Brad was married until after their relationship started, so no problem there. Could she have stopped it? Yes, she could have. But to what end? It is controversial, but in my opinion, Jae has no obligation to Brad's wife, he does.
This is a book that gets you thinking, and will likely polarize readers to one side or the other.

This book showcases a messy romance and questionable life decisions by the main characters in a way which shows the realistic messy-ness of life.
It deals with emotional issues in an unflinching way and I appreciated the honesty of the author in her writing.
I struggled to connect to the characters a bit and even though there was a happily ever after, I wasn’t convinced by the characters involved throughout the story and I’m not sure it such a HEA.
This book definitely got me thinking and incited some real feelings in me. There are some controversial topics in here which won’t be for everyone (eg. cheating).
It’s a fast paced read and I raced through it. It offers a different take on a romance which made it an interesting read

I was sent an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I normally don’t like the cheating trope, but this book was a lot more about Jae and her growth. And while cheating is involved the situation is messy and not black & white, which is sort of realistic about love and how we can’t help who we fall in love with and some situations are beyond our control. There were times I was frustrated with Jae but mostly I just felt for her from beginning to end. There were no real “bad” people in the book (ok except for a few petty and manipulative people haha) but overall I really liked the book. I do wish the ending was expanded a bit more to show more of Jae and her happy ending.

Could not put it down the last 200 pages or so! A book that I truly didn’t know where it was going or how it was going to end. I felt very pulled into the story.
It was a challenging read at times with heavy topics (would recommend looking into TW) but I really enjoyed reading about Jae and her story.
Reminded me a bit of “Something Borrowed” and as one of my favorite movies of all time, I really enjoyed reading something that made me feel like I was experiencing that movie again for the first time.

I have mixed feelings about this book. While I enjoyed the writing style and the sound of the book, I did not enjoy Brad and Jae’s relationship. I feel like Brad was just pulling Jae along and Jae was just too soft in my opinion. After years, I feel like she should have thought about herself more. Of course, I’ve never been in this type of situating so I can’t say how I would act.
While I’m not fan of the characters, I can appreciate a well written character and a well crafted plot.
So while, the story itself is not my favorite, I quite like the writing and the style of the story.

This story asks, “Do you have a soulmate?”. Someone you can’t live without no matter what. Someone you will love forever. It’s a very interesting question. When I picked up this book I completely judged by its cover because the cover is so beautiful and the title is intriguing. I’m also an Emily Giffin fan so that was another draw. When I started reading the book it was the characters that drew me in. While I didn’t agree with all their choices it is a great book to read and get lost in. I felt as if I was living the story; sitting in their offices; working long hours with them. I loved how the writing style made me part of the story.

The story just didn’t grip me. Personally cheating tropes don’t sit well with me, especially when the love interest is a walking red flag. He ignores her, doesn’t fight for her and when she tries to move to another city to get away from it, he won’t leave her alone and moves there as well. Just giving creep vibes. I wasn’t rooting for Jae. She alienated everyone in her life for this guy, and gave up a perfectly good guy for Brad.
Also TW for miscarriage, I don’t understand why this was a part of the story, it didn’t add anything and I didn’t like the way she talked about this and tried to add reasoning to it towards the end of the story.
