Hiii~ My name is Jenn and I write books about Monsters and their partners. Mostly orcs, but I'm trying to branch out and write about other creatures. My stories tend to be on the fluffy side, but there are a few outliers! Hopefully, you'll enjoy one of my book boyfriends as much as I do.
This was so sweet and cute! I loved the premise, where Breht arrives on the scene to help a struggling business owner find her footing and become a success. Then it got better when it's revealed they were friends long ago and Brierley is the one who got away.
I also really liked that Breht was very casually pansexual, like "yeah I don't care about the package a person comes in, it's not a big deal" kind of way. It is still an MF romance but as a pan person in a hetero relationship it's really great to see!
I think the only thing I didn't really vibe with was the use of an omniscient POV. Maybe if I had known about it going in it would have been fine, but as it was I found myself getting a little bit confused when we'd be in one character's perspective only to find ourselves suddenly in another's for a bit before slipping back. It does make it easier to get insight into each character in a scene but especially the first few times it happened I had to go back and re-orient myself.
Overall though I really enjoyed Jenn's crisp yet warm voice and the sweet whirlwind romance between Breht and Briarley 😊
Breht, an Orc, works for his matriarch's corporation and is tasked with helping a small jewellery business go from zero to hero within five days. He is doing it because he really cares about people and their businesses, and his matriarch agrees to this because she wants him to fail. Yeah, she's a really horrible mother.
Brierley, a human, is the jeweler and owner of said small business, and, while apprehensive at first, she's really glad to have Breht's advice and help. And it turns out they used to go to school together, and he's always had a thing for her, unbeknownst to her. Now that he's older, she is much more appreciative of him.
Throughout this lovely story, we see that Breht really wants to get out from under his mother's disapproving thumb and meddling, as well as start a new, happier life away from his toxic, abusive, stalker ex-girlfriend, who has real trouble hearing him say no. And Brierley accepts him for who he is without wanting anything in return. They are simply two people (a person and an orc) who meet, really like each other, and want to see what the future will hold for them.
I loved reading Breht's story and seeing how this big, impressive orc has a sweeter, softer side that he allows Brierley to see. It was a nice contrast to the testosterone-loaded, domineering orcs I've read in the past. The descriptions of Brierley's jewellery and how it reminds her of her grandmother were also very sweet—and abalone paua shells were my grandmother's favourite jewellery as well! It reminded her of when she lived by the ocean with my grandfather. I loved that bit of shared history with Brierley.
Their love story is intertwined with the makeover and relaunch of her jewellery store, and I was so glad that both had a HEA.
A perfectly cute slice of life Orc romance with a lot of miscommunication. 3.5 ⭐️ 2🌶️
Breht is tasked with turning a failing business into a profitable one and that just so happens to put him directly in the path of former classmate and high school crush, Brierly who runs a jewellery shop.
What worked: I liked seeing them reconnect and learn more about each other - Breht kept his artistic side private so their collaboration on her jewellery designs was really sweet. The spice takes until the end of the book to occur but when it does it’s long and detailed.
What didn’t work: I’d seen from other reviews that the POV was a bit all over the place and even knowing that going in it was still confusing when perspective would change with no indication. There was also a lot of miscommunication that was frustrating to read. I just wanted them to be adults and talk to each other!! 😤 That was really the main conflict.. so I could’ve done without the crazy ex-girlfriend bit as well.
There’s definitely an audience for this type of book but unfortunately it’s not me.
Thanks to the author for the ARC - all opinions are my own.
This was a very sweet book. Definitely a slow burn, but in the end it was worth it. Big Orcs definitely live up to their reputation in this story 🔥🥵🫠 As for the plot, I loved Breht and Brierley's reconnecting. It was nice to know a little of their backstory as a highschool acquaintances. Breht is definitely a big softie for Brierley and definitely came with his own baggage. Brierley is not a damsel in destress which I enjoyed. Breht was able to help show her her worth as an artist and help her with her business. The only thing that felt a bit odd was the pov and it was a bit confusing at times, but not enough to take me out of the story. Overall, I really liked this book and I recommend it.
This book was a 4.5 for me. I really enjoyed this slice of life orc romance. Brierley and Breht were such a cute couple, and I love how supportive they were of each other. Both characters are dealing with their own issues but could depend on each other for help and support. I also enjoyed that this book was multi-POV, I enjoy the glimpses into both main characters' minds. This book also had a good amount of spice after the build-up. I hope we'll get to see more of them in future books, I'd love to see more of their lives after the HEA.
this was a masterpieceeeee🤌 our mc wassss soooooo goooddd😭 (even tho he was younger than her!) kind and caring 💖 ahhh i wish i could find someone like him🤧 guyssss you need to read this book its a cute rom book💘🙈
Since I'm supposed to be fully honest, I will be, The book wasn't that awesome when I first started it, the first few pages made me think that I will dnf it or give it below 3 stars, but as I progressed through the pages, it got way better than I thought it would, I loved Breht, he's the perfect gentleman and I loved Brierly and her passion for what she does, They both are like 2 peas in a pod in a romantic way, and I loveeee Tori, with her humor and easygoing nature and obscene gestures, she's a good friend.
