May Day, or Beltane, is approaching, and the veil between the world of the Land Spirits-- the Fae-- and the everyday folk of Vardo has grown thin.
The town turns out to celebrate with Maypoles, bonfires, and Yohopa ceremonial dances at the annual Beltane Festival.
The festivities will also celebrate the grand opening of Gideon’s Grimoire, a new occult bookstore on the Vardo Town Square, with a visit from famous fantasy author Dahlia Clarendon. Her appearance marks the launch of her latest book, Queen of Wands. Just as thousands of fantasy fans flock to Vardo, a murder causes the mayor to cancel the Beltane Festival.
Sparks fly as Perrie Spock, the town's psychic mortician, partners with Sheriff Reg Woolaroc to solve the crime. Perrie’s psychic senses kick into gear as evidence of the Fae appear in her a circle of mushrooms sprouts after a storm; mysterious lights pulsate from a fallen hawthorn tree. Are the Fae present? Another shocking murder outside the bookstore sets the town on edge and sends Perrie's psychic senses into overdrive to solve the murders alongside the handsome sheriff.
This quirky mystery features Perrie, who is an undertaker in a small Oklahoma town with magical attributes. Perrie sometimes gets messages from the dead, which is especially interesting in her profession. A famous author is visiting to talk about her latest book and the town has her featured at the Beltane celebration, but things don't go according to plan. There's also a romance developing between Perrie and a local police officer; they are working together to close the case using both conventionally and supernaturally acquired clues.
If you’re looking for a good spooky but not too spooky story for the Halloween season this is for you. If you’ve read the previous books in the series you know that Perrie Spock is a mortician at her family’s Rose Funeral Home. She’s also got a bit of magic she gets feelings and impressions from some of the dead she works on. Empathetic is the way it’s described. In this book the town is gearing up for two special events May Day or Beltane and a famous fantasy author’s launching of her newest book. Unfortunately celebrating comes to a quick and deadly end when the author is shot at the opening ceremony of the festival. Perrie and the Sheriff Reg along with his staff are on a hunt for a killer before they strike again. Two things struck me one the subtly hinted at subplot of the missing boy will turn out very important and if you read you’ll see why. Although my guess as to who that was turned out to be incorrect it still gave a depth and intrigue to the story. The second thing was the ending was a bit abrupt. There’s a lot of build up we get key clues in the last chapter then boom it’s over. It’s sort of like when they cancel a show you’ve loved watching and the last episode was a cliffhanger so you’re left teetering and wondering. It wasn’t a bad ending nor a bad story in any way but I definitely think it would have benefited from a bit of a wrap up or an epilogue or something that doesn’t leave you with such a jarring feeling. Great story, great buildup but they didn’t stick the landing. My two cents your mileage may vary.

People in the town of Vardo are preparing to celebrate at the Beltane Festival. A big event will be the grand opening of Gideon’s Grimoire bookstore with a celebrity guest, author Dahlia Clarendon. Unfortunately a deadly event forces the mayor to cancel everything when the author is murdered as an arrow is shot into her chest at the opening ceremony of the festival. Right before the murder occurred, Perrie Spock, the town's psychic mortician, had seen an aura around Dahlia. Thunder boomed and the crowd panicked trying to get away from the scene. Perrie joins Sheriff Reg Woolaroc and they quickly begin their investigation before the killer harms someone else. Strange events occur as Perrie’s psychic senses kick in and reveal evidence of the Fae. But are they actually there? Or is something else happening?
Murder and the Bookseller is the third Psychic Last Responder series book. It is a page-turner with all of the best elements of a murder mystery. There is also added suspense, drama, a budding romance, wonderful characters, and unexpected twists, with the paranormal thrown in that makes the storyline delightfully entertaining and engaging. The cliffhanger ending has me looking for the next book in the series!.

Totally enjoyed this story. Could not put it down. So entertaining you just had to continue with the next chapter. Sorry that it ended but enjoyed every bit of it.
I am enjoying this series. It’s well written and very interesting to see the combination of First Nations people and the Romani culture collide in a small Oklahoma town. The editing in the book needs addressed, I’m not sure if it’s because of the kindle format or because the series is self published, but there are lots of errors in page transitions and sometimes the misuse of character’s names. It’s a lovely series though and I look forward to reading more from this author.
Couldn’t put this book down. I wasn’t sure about it at first but it kept getting better. It could use some proofreading as there were a few skipped words, but that didn’t affect the storyline. Would recommend reading this book. Interesting twist at the end!
Mortuary Perrie is a heck of a nickname for your crush to give you, even if it was a childhood nickname
Perrie seems to face clashes between her childhood and her adult skills, training and responsibilities as the mortician for the family mortuary
those chatty ghosts keep her busy often, and not infrequently a bit perplexed as she works to combine her skeptical nature with her skills for sensing the emotions and auras of the dead
a bevy of outsiders, who might have some connections to each other, end up in trouble, and worse than troubles
can Perrie and her friends unravel the various related puzzles and dramas before more folks wind up in the hereafter?
Love this series! Never thought I would like books about mortuaries and autopsies. But, there are no graphic details (it’s a cozy mystery after all)…..just charming characters (even the bad guys have some charming characteristics), a 3 legged dog named Django, evil doers doing evil deeds, mysteries to solve, psychic things, and no cliffhanger ending. It should have had an editor (or a better one), but nothing terribly distracting. So, curl up in a comfy chair with a cup of tea and enjoy…..I did!
Last book in the psychic last responder series, other than the short Christmas story.
This is a unique end to the miniseries. Is there more to come? Not sure I know, or if the author does. Many series have the ability to span from 3-100 books, and cozy mysteries are no exception.
This story is about the world of fae, fantasy, the ego of fame, mental health, and obsessive nerd culture and the dark angles of obsession. Not to mention Perrie the mortician and Reg the Sheriff. A cozy mystery must read.
These books are really good. The main characters all live in a magical place called Vardo. It's magical because some of the people that live there have a little bit of magic in them. I hope there will be more books. They are well worthy of five stars.
This series has been interesting, and I really enjoy how easily Perries gift is accepted as it doesn't add unnecessary drama to the story. Three stars for this because I feel there is a lot of info missing to the stories happening within. The missing child, relationship items that pop up, etc.
I recommend anyone to read this series and this book
Welcome back with Perrie and the whole gang as they welcome a new bookstore to town and there is to be an author signing her new book at the opening. Unfortunately, someone doesn’t think this is an exciting opening or they wouldn’t have put an arrow through one of the bookstore guests. Now it’s up to Reg and Petrie to try to discover who the killer is before they have a chance to kill again. I recommend any mystery lover read this book and try to find the answer yourself, you won’t be disappointed;)
Perri Rose is an unusual protagonist. She is the town of Vardo, O.K. mortified and a psychic of sorts. The town's paranormal activities and practitioners are treated as average, everyday people and their routines. A May Day festival is disrupted by a very public murder of a famous fantasy author and a search begins for the murderer. There is a little romance, lots of community cooperation, and a surprising twist.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. The people and town of Vardo are interesting. In this book they are celebrating May Day and the opening of a new bookstore. Things do not go to plan.
