But when an opportunity to take her employer's place arises, she's willing to risk death by fire and sneak into the tournament that will name the next Mist Knight. Second in command of the Mist Knights, full-blooded Fae noble Marius prides himself on living a strictly disciplined life. He has his Wed the commander's daughter. Rise to his father-in-law's role when the time is right. But he never saw Tahlia coming... Tahlia is determined to burn her way into the Mist Knights' world and take that handsome Marius along for the ride.

“You with your wild joy and your ridiculous courage have bent my resolve like a storm tosses a willow.”
————about the book————
Age: NA
Genres: Fantasy, Dragons, Novellas,
Writing: 7/10
Quotes: 7/10
World building: 7/10
Characters: 7/10
Romance: 8/10
My rating: 7.5/10
trigger warnings: Injury, Drugging, Violence, Threat of Death, etc.
———my thoughts———
With every Grumpy/Sunshine book I read, my love for the trope just grows.
There’s just something so irresistible about the dynamics between the mains characters, and the juxtaposition between their personalities.
Even though Bound By Dragons is a novella, it’s full of world-building and tiny bits of lore.
I was so impressed by the author’s ability to give us just the information we needed, without it feeling lacking or too much.
(Although, I probably should mention that I pictured the How To Train Your Dragon world throughout reading)
The characters are both delightful, and while I would have liked more on the romance side, this IS a novella.
Although I wish it was longer, it (like most novellas) suits the shorter manuscript.
Especially with the short timeframe it’s set in, anything longer would be a little stretched out.
And yes, it is a little instalove-y.
But like I said, with as short a book as this is, I was expecting it.
The one thing I REALLY wish we had more of, was the dragons.
While we got much more explanation about the dragons themselves, the lore behind them and more information about the different species.
Apart from that though, it was the perfect quick read.
————quotes————
“If you stare at my waist for much longer, I’m going to think you appreciate it more than my ability to ride a dragon.”
“I want you to do poorly up there.”
“What?”
“But only so badly that you’re kicked out of the lineup, not kicked out of life.”
“I was born to ride dragons,” she whispered to herself, “and no one can steal my fate.”
“Yes, yes. Attractive and dangerous male. Just every idiot’s type.”
———random extra thoughts———
Also, the cover for this series are just GORGEOUS!
Thanks for reading! ❤️

5/5 STARS
This is one of eleven novellas in The Starry Kingdoms of the Fae series written by different indie authors. They are all stand alones and can be read in any order.
You need to know that this is a novella. It is meant to be a short story where the pace is fast and there isn’t a lot of in depth description of characters and world building. Yes, there will be unanswered questions and plot holes to get you to read other books by the author. I personally love novellas because they give you a taste of the author’s writing style and you can read them in one to two sittings.
For those of you coming off of a Fourth Wing hangover, you will LOVE this novella! It is about dragon riders and a tournament to become one of them. I have read Alisha’s The Fae King’s Assassin and this book references a few characters in that book/ is set in that world which I really enjoyed, so that was a little bonus. Now I need book 2 in her series! This novella has romance, grumpy/sunshine, forbidden love, rags to riches, fae, and dragons. It’s really good!
Thank you to Alisha for the ARC! 🐉

Cozy romantic comedy with dragon riders. However, I dropped a star from my rating because I felt like the love interest Marius was sort of bland? I know it’s supposed to be grumpy x sunshine but I feel like the FMC and her best friend carried this novel in terms of overall chemistry. Witty banter between the FMC, Tahlia, and her friend, Fara, will have you smiling at their antics and Fara is easily my favorite character here! She’s a ride or die for her bestie. I’d suggest going into this book expecting a cute story centering on two best friends with a side of romance for the FMC. Also, fans of the author’s novel “The Fae King’s Assassin” will be delighted to read this story and find cameos of TFKA’s protagonists.

Not really anything special🫣 The dragons were cool tho! But some moments were a bit cringe 😂

Unfortunately, because it‘s a novella, there is a lack of depth and corresponding development of the story and characters. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading it and liked the main chars. The book is quite nice for a little treat in between.

What a great intro to a series! It was a little fast paced and could have done with more detail in certain areas, but overall, I really enjoyed this introduction to the Bound by Dragons series.
I like both the main characters, love the FMC's best friend, and the dragons. The story had me laughing and I actually got nervous at the tasks the characters were undertaking!
Overall, a very enjoyable story! I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

This was such an enjoyable read. Thalia is such a strong and courageous FMC and Marius is just equally amazing.
I haven’t read any of the other novellas before this one but I will now certainly look into it.
Alisha Klapheke writes beautifully and in such an incredible way that you can clearly visualise the environment and the characters.
I cannot wait until the next one

This was one of the cutest books! It's set in a world I'm very familiar with, with "cameo" appearances by two characters we got to meet and love in The Fae King's Assassin but with a different cast. This cast was such fun! The book was such fun! I was dinkum grinning through most of the book.
So here we have Thalia, who's half human half Fae, which is a teensy bit of a problem when you're living amongst full blooded Fae and you have aspirations of bettering yourself. Her character immediately drew me in. I love an underdog, they are usually the ones who evoke the strongest emotions in me and by page 2, I was already rooting for her! A chance presents itself, not a legit one but this is Thalia, impetus, gregarious, vibrant Thalia, who, as her friend Fara said, her schemes are "less joyful fun and more, we almost died". The banter between these two was a delight. She really really wants to be a dragon rider and join the Mist Knights but half breed and all, yeah, problem! So she concocts a rather dubious plan...
Marius comes across as a stickler for, well, everything! He was a contradiction a minute, his thoughts varying vastly from his actions and verbal communication. Ok, yes, I know he's a High Captain for the Mist Knights but still, a bit of external warmth wouldn't be inappropriate. I initially thought him a stick in the mud but his true persona will out, and it did, splendidly! He's got his whole life figured out, what he wants to achieve, how he wants to go about it, but we all know that carefully laid plans go belly up! Which is only highlighted when Thalia encounters Marius for the first time, I actually caught myself giggling. I loved their interaction, the way Thalia's mouth betrays her over and over again and Marius falling further and further under her spell.
Heck, they had me spelled! Alisha's books are always an immensely fun read, whether it's an assassin out to kill the King or a young girl who dreams of achieving out of her depths. This book was entertaining, it was, to me, a lighthearted uncomplicated read. It builds up fabulously and I got a true sense of each of the characters. It's one of those reads that when I got to the end of the book, I did an imaginary fist pump. Beautiful, fun, humourous and delightful!

Tahlia swept me off my feet from the first page and twirled me through this fabulous adventure without a backward glance. I loved every moment of this novel, but most particularly the references to one of my favorite movies of all time: A Knight's Tale.
The dragons were brilliant too and I love the lore Klapheke has created for this world and its dragon riders. The competition really had my heart racing and the rivalry with the other riders had me so invested in this story.
The romantic elements truly hit the spot and I absolutely love the snarky banter between Marius and Tahlia. They make for such an incredible couple even as the world hurled obstacles at them from all sides.
This one is definitely a memorable read that stands out in the subgenre of dragon-rider-romantasy. I highly recommend this one.

This is a lovely, quick little read and my favorite of the Starry Fae series thus far. For those that enjoyed Fourth Wing, this story will likely be one that you also enjoy.
This has an excellent grumpy/sunshine pairing and dragon riding. Thalia, a feisty half-human squire, decides that she'll risk competing in a dragon-riding tournament to become a Mist Knight for the realm.
One of the highlights of Bound by Dragons is the author's ability to create well-rounded and relatable characters. Tahlia's determination and fiery spirit make her a captivating protagonist, while Marius's disciplined nature and noble demeanor provide an intriguing contrast. Their journey together is filled with challenges, growth, and undeniable chemistry, making their romance a compelling focal point of the story.
Perfectly delightful beach read.

Imagine How to Train Your Dragon meeting A Knight's
Tale (The one with Heath Ledger), and you have Bound
by Dragons.
This is a cozy/epic fantasy mix about a girl named
Tahlia who feels she was born to raise dragons and her
always hungry best friend Fara. When a scheme to get
into the Dragon Riders program leads Tahlia into
meeting with grumpy commander Marius, two fates that
appeared to always lead in a straight line start to get a
bit jumbled.

Favorite line of the entire book:
“Yes, yes. Attractive and dangerous male. Just every idiots type”. -Fara, best friend
The friendship between Tahlia and Fara was a favorite aspect of the story. The dragons and the descriptions of their abilities as well as the Stoney Marius were other favorites. Super fun and quick read!
I really enjoy Alisha’s writing and this Fae world is fun to be in!

Todos os anos eu tento ler - e completar a leitura de - uma trilogia. Em 2025 tocou a Bound by dragons.

This was such a fun little novella! 💚
🐲 Part of the Starry Kingdoms of the Fae Collection, I obviously had to read this one first after driving myself crazy with Iron Flame theories over the weekend 🙈
🧝🏻♂️ This was far too short, but crammed full of fun, action and adventure! Loved how funny and unstoppable Thalia was, such a great contrast to broody serious Marius. 🫶🏼
💕 Can’t wait to find out what happens next, as well as read more backstory about EVERY character (good thing there are two books in the Realm of Dragons and Fae available, and another coming in December!) 📚
🐦⬛ Also thinking about which book to read next in the Starry Kingdoms series - lots of fun cosy novellas to dive into! 🍯

4.75 ⭐️ really enjoyed this read. I wish it was longer so there was a slower build up to the romance. It was like a sped up fourth wing. Very quick enjoyable read. Almost a 5 ⭐️ just needed to be longer and a slower burn romance ( in my opinion)

I really wanted to like it, but it just wasn't good. It dragged in places that I didn't care about and skimmed over any scenes that could have been good.
The dragon riding was too chaotic and the characters had zero depth to them.
I was holding out for something more that just never came.

Of all the books I’ve read by Klapheke this one is my absolute FAVORITE! There wasn’t anything about this lovely and fantastical story that I didn’t WHOLEHEARTEDLY ENJOY! The story was both completely unique and overwhelmingly beautiful and I sat in rapt attention, spellbound and undeniably captivated.
Tahlia’s utmost dream is to become a Mist Knight and to bond with a dragon of her own. However the fact that she is half human and her blood only holds a small amount of Mistgold makes this more of a pipe dream. However, when she and her Fae Friend, Farah, find themselves jobless and almost completely broke she decides to take matters into her own hands. With some scheming, spending almost their last bit of coin, and the human ability to lie Talhia finds herself enrolled in the tournament to become the next Mist Knight.
Marius has all his dragons in a row. Make High Captain✔️Get engaged to the Commander’s daughter ✔️Be next in-line to become the next Commander ✔️. However, when the overly confident and too excited girl finds her way into the training yard and stumbles upon Marius and his dragon, Ragewing, he may just find that his heart has plans of its own and this girl might be exactly what it needs.
I absolutely loved both Tahlia and Marius. They were both extremely endearing and passionate characters. Their love for the dragons was completely sweet and intriguing and the way they were drawn to one another was written perfectly. They complemented each other in the absolute best of ways.
So there was some definite risqué moments in this novella. But they were sooooooo well written and tastefull and added a lot of depth to both Tahlia and Marius character. On one hand the story was both whimsical, straightforward, and cozy. On the other there was some real spice and flame and I was all for it. Klapheke did such an excellent job balancing the two and it made for such a fun and intriguing story.
So if you love some whimsy, some spice, amazing characters, the love of dragons, and a completely captivating tale then you NEED to READ BOUND BY DRAGONS! It’s one unique ride but nothing short of ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

Tahlia is a half-human half-fae squire determined to become the next Mist Knight. The Knights are an elite squad of dragon riders that protects the kingdom from pirates. At their annual tournament, only one knight gets to become the next Mist Knight and with her half-human blood, Tahlia doesn't qualify for the tournament. Stubborn and determined, she sneaks herself into the competition. Marius, the Mist Knight captain and legendary dragon rider, is a bit put off by Tahlia's attitude and joy for riding, something that he has pushed aside in his master plan of becoming the world's greatest rider. Tahlia and Marius are so drawn to one another that it's hard to keep eyes, and hands, off one another during the course of the competition....
For this being the third book I have read in the series of stand-alone novels, I have to say this was probably the one with the fastest plot so far. I liked the world building and the dragons, of course, but the ending felt a little rushed. I also wasn't really a fan of the timeline, as this book takes place pretty much within a day or two. I am a sucker for a slow-burn romance, and this is definitely not that so that is probably why I'm thrown off a little bit. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable read but I wish there was a bit more depth to the characters. (12/2023)

Lots of action, dragons, tension, a strong and optimistic FMC, a grumpy and honourable High Captain.
The story is pretty light and it reads like a train, almost impossible to put aside. I love the characters and the concept of Mist Knights, and did I mention there are dragons? It’s really interesting how there are different types with their own specialties. I was also really intrigued by the broader world and society. I’ll definitely check out Alisha’s other books set in this universe. I even wouldn’t have minded if this book were a full length novel because I was really invested in the story, characters and dragons and didn’t want it to end. Yes some things evolve rather quickly, but it is a novella so there is little room for slow and steady development. There is also a lot of humour to be found in this book, making this book even more pleasant to read. Both the dustjacket and the hardback cover are really beautifully designed as well. I would definitely recommend Bound by Dragons, 4,25/5 ⭐
I received an eARC of this book.
The story is pretty light and it reads like a train, almost impossible to put aside. I love the characters and the concept of Mist Knights, and did I mention there are dragons? I was born to ride dragons and no one can steal my fate...
All half-Fae Tahlia ever wanted was to become a Mist Knight, a dragon riding warrior defending the kingdom's wild north coast. Sadly, she never had the right blood, the right ancestors, the right anything. But when an opportunity to take her employer's place arises, she's willing to risk death by fire and sneak into the tournament that will name the next Mist Knight.
Second in command of the Mist Knights, full-blooded Fae noble Marius prides himself on living a strictly disciplined life. He has his plan: Wed the commander's daughter. Rise to his father-in-law's role when the time is right. But he never saw Tahlia coming...
Tahlia is determined to burn her way into the Mist Knights' world and take that handsome Marius along for the ride.
This is the Bound by book I was MOST excited for. Dragons! I can never get enough of them. But in all honesty, the start of the book felt quite slow and just "OK" to me. Once Tahlia meets Marius I do feel like the book gets better but I still found myself skimming parts to get further ahead. Overall, I loved the premise and I loved the fourth wing vibes that radiated from this short novel.
Apparently there will be more of Tahlia and Marius so I'm excited to keep my eyes out for the next books about them!!!

What a great book! I didn't want to put it down and I'm so happy that I have book 2 ready to go so I can start it immediately.
Tahlia is risking everything to sneak her way into a tournament to choose the newest Mist Knight. If anyone finds out that she's half human, she'll be put to death. But Tahlia was born to ride dragons and won't let anything stand in her way, even the moody and attractive High Captain.
I personally think the categories on Amazon need adjusted, because Tahlia is 21 and while this isn't overly spicy, it seems to be a bit much for YA. Just an FYI for teen readers or older readers looking for a clean read.
That being said, the spice is delicious and I'm hoping it continues into book 2.

Such a fast pacing great read with amazing, beloved leading characters 🥰
I dived into this book and having high hopes as to what expect of it. It didn't disappoint, not in the least.
I LOVED all the characters! They're so marvelously written! The grumpy * sunshine trope is executed in such a good way!!
What to expect :
🔥Dragons
🔥Tournaments
🔥Banter
🔥Sunshine FMC * Grumpy MMC
🔥Great friendship
🔥Mist Knight
🔥The MMC has unexpected insta lust/attraction towards the FMC.
🔥The appearance of the MCs in the below book by the same author

The only thing that I didn't like was how each trial & tournament had ended too briefly with too little details. I wish it had been longer.

Super quick dragon rider/romantasy stand alone novella (part of a larger collection)! I read it in one sitting, it was great.
Perfect for anyone who liked Fourth Wing and wants to scratch that dragon rider itch. The FMC, Tahlia, could definitely give Violet a run for her money.
Light spice but it honestly didn't need it. I'm intrigued by this collection of novellas and will definitely be picking up more.
thank you to the author, Alisha Klapheke, for the ebook in exchange for my honest review.

3.5 stars!
Bound by Dragons is a fun, short read that has an amazing grumpy/sunshine vibe, Dragonriders, fae, and some romance. I'm a big fan of double POVs and fell in love with Tahlia and Marius, the main characters in this story. I really enjoyed this book even though it was a bit on the short side. I missed some world-building, but seeing as this is the first book in a novella series, I'm excited to read the next one and also dive more into Starry Kingdoms of the Fae Collection.

I really liked the concept of this story. Reminded me in part of A Knight’s Tale which is such a good movie. The characters were interesting, although I found myself more interested in the side characters than the main characters. I love the grumpy/sunshine troupe, but I found myself wanting more with the characters. We saw his immediate attraction and interest as he got to know her, but she just seemed to think he was grumpy and good looking. I didn’t understand why she was so attracted to him. I wanted more to help me believe it.
