Explaining that, for centuries, humans have employed symbols to represent thoughts or feelings and protect secret information, Nadia Julien investigates how such visual clues have been used in folklore, faith and everyday life throughout time and reveals how to interpret them on a personal level. Presented in dictionary format, her findings encompass religions, belief systems and cultures worldwide.
After coming in contact with Chevalier's dictionary, I wanted to branch out and see other options that were a bit more comfortable for my wallet. This did the trick for now. So if you want to explore and initiate into the world of symbols this could be the gateway.
I haven't per say finished reading this book but as it is a dictionary I didn't read it page by page but rather intensely researched with it for the last few months and it is sooo very interesting. It could use more picture example but besides that it's a perfect symbol reference book !
Discombobulated and at times hard to decipher, but this book is absolutely chock-full of information that makes up for it's mashed together nature. Take your time with it, and you'll feel rewarded.
DNF. Thought this was an actual book on lost symbols but instead it's a new age guide to symbols almost like a dream dictionary. Each symbol gets random words that supposedly what it represents then some history and mythology. Don't expect all of them to have this information because a few just has a sentence or two with very little information. I haven't heard of many of these and so if they are correct they are kinda interesting.
