DEADLY MOUNTAIN ESCAPE by Mary Alford is an exciting Christian suspense/mystery/Christian romantic suspense that drops the reader into action and danger right away and continues to escalate the peril until the climax of the story. This is a book that I sat down with and read from start to finish because I could not stop turning the pages.
K-9 Deputy Charlotte Walker and her K=9 partner, Annie, are notified by her elderly neighbor that her granddaughter never came home from work the night before. As Charlotte looks for Lainey, she is attacked and becomes trapped in a deadly situation.
Jonas Knowles walked away from his Amish religion after a tragedy. He notices the deputy go to the local home of a known troublemaker but when he sees her Jeep make the return trip, it is not Charlotte driving. He goes to look for her and hears noise coming from a car beginning to sink in the river…and the ever-escalating danger begins from there.
Charlotte and Jonas both carry personal guilt that has left them unable to move forward. As they run from the danger of a human trafficking ring who want to silence them, they both share their burdens and look to their faith and each other to help them with their guilt, protect them, and stop the trafficking ring in the mountains.
This is a wonderful action-adventure suspense with memorable characters and a plot that has several twists and surprises throughout. There is more suspense and mystery in this story than romance because it is set over a very short two-day period, but the epilogue gave me all the warm and happy vibes I hoped for at the end. Both Charlotte and Jonas are believable characters that are fully developed. They both carry guilt from their pasts but show empathy and understanding to each other. They both also have strong Christian faith backgrounds and beliefs that are woven seamlessly throughout the story in a realistic way. K- 9 Annie is a great addition to my dog-loving heart. Her loyalty and bravery play a pivotal role in several scenes. All the secondary characters were well written, both good and bad. The suspense/mystery kept me engaged and I did not guess the leader of the ring until almost the end.
I highly recommend this Christian suspense/mystery/Christian romantic suspense. Ms. Alford is fast becoming a must-read author of Amish and Christian fiction for me.
Looking for a missing girl Stumbles upon so much more, One wrong move and you can end up dead.. Sometimes asking questions, Can be deadly. Those who you think would never harm anyone. Turns out to be somebody completely different.
For Charlotte and Jonas knowles The power of prayer is on their side. Along with a k-9 Sometimes prayer is what we all need. When on the side of a deadly mountain. Will they make it out alive.
This was a quick read. A suspense. I Truly, enjoyed this one. Mary writes some wonderful stories. I love that it had amish characters in the story.. Just a perfect read. Looking for a good read with a little amish kick well this is your book...
Sometimes friends aren't who you think they are. Sometimes they show their true colors. And those can be deadly.
Along with her trained canine companion Annie, Charlotte Walker makes a formidable and determined deputy when faced with crime. What she discovers in trying to locate a missing young woman is a trafficking ring that endangers her entire community. She also finds help in Jonas Knowles, a young man who left the Amish community and lives alone on a ranch near where the trafficking center seems to be. Jonas is dedicated to helping Charlotte find a group of missing girls and bring the traffickers to justice. This book is non-stop action, plenty of hair-raising scenes as Charlotte and Jonas face danger again and again, from the winter weather, the traffickers and unknown assailants. The plot is compelling and relevant with intense, page-turning twists. The characters are believable and fascinating with complicated backstories and personalities. The entire book was an enjoyable and quick read that I highly recommend. Mary Alford knows how to capture her readers in the story and make them sit on the edge of their seat as they wait for the heroes to overcome evil. Mary Alford's Deadly Mountain Escape. This book was so exciting that it was hard to put down.
Deputy Charlotte is just doing a routine check. Looking for a young girl. When she runs into trouble, Jonas, a man who's left the Amish, comes to her rescue. And so begins non-stop action and breathtaking escapes. And the ending, what a twist! This was an awesome story.
I was provided an advanced review copy of this book by the author/publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
I picked up Deadly Mountain Escape and didn’t put it down until I was finished reading. Author Mary Alford leads the reader on a heart pounding journey, where the danger stems not only from the book’s villains, but also their surroundings. Deputy Charlotte Walker is called on by her older neighbor to locate her granddaughter Lainey, missing since the night before. Charlotte and her K9 partner, Annie, start the search unofficially, and find themselves in danger almost immediately. Jonas Knowles, a nearby rancher, and former Amish, sees evidence that something is wrong and goes to help. Thankfully he rescues Charlotte and Lainey, but this sets off a race for their lives, trying to outwit and outrun those after them. The criminal ring dealing in young women will stop at nothing to keep their “business” from crumbling. As Charlotte and Jonas work to protect Lainey and rescue the other women, they grow closer. But each of them are burdened by guilt over the loved ones they each lost. Will that guilt, though not theirs to shoulder, keep them from starting a new future together? Find out in Deadly Mountain Escape, plus it has my favorite…an epilogue! I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.

This is a Christian suspense story and involves human trafficking Mary writes a story that definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Boy does Deputy Charlotte get a big surprise when doing a routine check for a young girl. But instead uncovers a human trafficking ring!
Jonas is an Amish man that left the life after losing his wife and child. Jonas comes to Charlotte’s rescue when she encounters trouble close to his farm.
While fighting for their lives, and the lives of other women that were being trafficked. Charlotte and Jonas face danger head on, but also learned that they are both grieving terrible losses in their past life. They do get a tremendous amount of help from Charlotte’s K-9 dog, Annie.
I read this book that was given to me by Mary as a part of her ARC team. This review is my honest opinion.
I always say that these Love Inspired Books though small are very mighty and this one is not exception. Immediately you are immersed into the nitty gritty of the story. This author does a great job at keeping you turning pages with all the action and twists she adds to her stories.
Here we meet Charlotte Walker who along with her K9 go on a rescue mission for a missing young woman. Things however go really bad. She stumbles into a trafficking ring that has been happening right on their "backyard" so to speak. Jonas who has his own past to deal with comes to help the ladies out and offers them refuge in a place he didn't think he would ever be returning.
I won't be giving you the whole book but overall I was definitely captivated and I was turning the pages with gusto trying to figure out how it was all going to end. If you like suspense books and need a quick read don't miss out on this one!
I received a digital copy of this book for review. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Deadly Mountain Escape, with its fast-paced, non-stop action, kept me engaged from the beginning and caught up in the story all the way to the end. Plenty of suspense, mystery, and plot twists and a dash of romance kept me turning the pages when I should have been sleeping! I quickly connected with the intriguing main characters Jonas and Charlotte. I love the way they help each other deal with their personal issues amidst all the danger they encounter from the human trafficking ring. The beautifully sketched rugged mountain setting adds depth and interest to the story. I appreciate the gentle faith thread with reminders about trusting God no matter the circumstances. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Deputy Charlotte Walker and Jonas Knowles are both dealing with guilt from their past. When they are forced to lean on each other, their lives go in a direction they never expected. The action was non-stop and it had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't put it down. The mystery and deception come at every turn.
Even though the story is about a sensitive subject, the author handled it brilliantly. The main characters have lots of layers and are courageous and cunning when trapped in a dire situation. Their faith in God is strong. My favorite character is Charlotte and her resilience in trying to protect the victims. Lots of surprises in the story. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and voluntarily chose to review it. All opinions are my own.
Mary Alford never disappoints with her suspense and action packed stories.
This one by far had me until late at night figuring who was behind this evil plan. Charlotte and Jonas were amazing characters. Full of hurt each with past loss, they each strived with energy, strength and faith in God despite the feeling of loneliness within.
This story talks about something evil but with the energetic characters that the author introduces us to, you are kept in fast pace with them. When Charlotte is called to help in a missing teen, she never imagined her day would turn into a bigger and scarier case. And when her jeep comes down the mountain driven by someone else is Jonas who wonders what's happening in decides to find out. Only to be running along side her for their lives and the young women they are come known to need their help.
With many people that can be involved, it is the last person you can imagine that hardly gets mentioned too much to show his true colors. Is a story that will have you racing through the pages to solve the case and hope for a happy ending.
I received an ARC from the author/publisher. A positive review was not required. Everything stated here is my own personal comment.
A great read! Lots of action and excitement with a few twists and turns included. K-9 deputy Charlotte Walker goes on a search for a missing young woman when things go terribly wrong. She is captured and her attacker is intent on killing her and the missing young woman. They are rescued by rancher Jonas Knowles from death. But now they are on a mission to find who attacked them and save other young women from a trafficking ring! All this during a snow storm and cut off from any communication of help! Will they be able to find the members of the ring before the bad guys find them and eliminate them? Can they save the other girls being held captive?
I enjoyed reading this book. I received the book from the author but was under no obligation to give a favorable review. I love Christian suspense books and this one was a good story.
Loved Jonas and Charlotte's story! Jonas feels like he's not truly living, hasn't for the last six years, and he feels that's his just punishment. Charlotte has been living on autopilot for the last year. When they are thrust together through circumstances, they realize they're drawn to each other. As they fight together to find a missing woman, and then realize they've stumbled upon so much more, will they be able to make a relationship work? Will they take their second chance at happiness, if they make it out of this alive? Love that Jonas and Charlotte realize that their real strength can only come from God, and the only one who can really help them is God. Even though Jonas has walked away from his Amish community and upbringing, he hasn't fully walked away from God.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, was not required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.

I received this book as an ARC with no expectation of a positive review. K-9 officer deputy Charlotte Walker was asked by her neighbor to look for her granddaughter, Lainey, who did not come home or call the night before. Charlotte was told that Lainey likes to go to the abandoned Christian camp. Charlotte set out with her K-9 Annie. They encountered more than they expected. This is a roller coaster ride as to who you an trust in this life and death struggle. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. It is a must read for all who love romantic suspense.
If you love non-stop excitement and suspense, you’ll love Deadly Mountain Escape by Mary Alford. This book from Love Inspired Suspense will keep you turning the pages; I read it in one sitting!
Deadly Mountain Escape is a book that is sadly all too relevant for today. It deals with the subject of human trafficking, specifically trafficking young women. It also speaks to the fact that anyone could be involved in this horrific “business.” The author does a very good job of portraying this in the book. Through Charlotte’s experience, Alford shows just how easily one could find herself in a dangerous situation.
Charlotte Walker, a K-9 unit deputy, never imagined what she was walking into when she went to look for her neighbor’s granddaughter. Charlotte showed her strength and her dedication to her job when she was willing to risk her life to rescue Lainey. She kept going even when she was cold, exhausted, and in mortal danger. Jonas, formerly Amish, showed the strength of his character when he got involved in the case. He refused to return to the safety of his farm and instead stayed to help Charlotte. Both Charlotte and Jonas suffered great losses, and I found myself in tears while reading about their losses since I also lost a spouse. Finding comfort in God was the only way I got through and the only way these characters can get through their losses too.
I really loved this book! The author describes the setting so well. The characters are trudging through snow, they’re wet, freezing, and tired, and you feel it too! I just kept thinking about how miserable that would be, and I’m not sure I’d be as determined as the characters though I hope I would. It really makes you think about the tragedy of human trafficking because though this is fiction, the subject matter isn’t. I know that God is in control, but we are his hands and feet. It’s up to us to listen to what he’s calling us to do.
I highly recommend Deadly Mountain Escape! The characters, subject matter, and non-stop action make it a must read for romantic suspense lovers!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Wow! This book is packed with edge of your seat action and suspense. Deputy Charlotte receives a call from a girl’s grandmother to find her since she’s late returning. Charlotte is off duty and has no idea what she’s getting into. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves suspense.
Deadly mountain escape is a intense, exciting heart stopping suspense!! I absolutely love this story!! It's action packed with wonderful characters. K-9 Annie is my very favorite. She stole my heart!! She's a fierce protector of officer Charlotte Walker. While trying to find her missing friend, Charlotte is abducted. Rancher Jonas Knowles saves her. They are forced to go on the run. This author knows how to keep you entertained and coming back for more of her stories!! A must read!!
Charlotte and Jonas don’t realize what they are getting into when they go to check on different friends. A small town nightmare that you will need a nap from after reading. The suspense will leave you breathless. Seatbelts are recommended.
I received an advanced readers copy from the author. Opinions are my own.
Thank you in advance to the author, Mary Alford, for providing a complimentary review copy through her review team. A positive review was not required nor requested, and all words are my own.
The first book by the author I read was almost four (4) years ago in March 2020, Amish Country Murder. Since then, I’ve read three of her Love Inspired Suspense (LIS) releases, and her Revell debut – Among the Innocent. I also have five (5) of her LIS books on my TBR, and, likely after this one – they won’t be the only ones.
This is actually a standalone read, though I do hope there are more connected books planned as I want to know more about what happened with certain characters.
And, speaking of characters, Alford introduces readers to:
👩🏻🦰 Charlotte 🐕🦺 Annie (Charlotte’s K-9 partner) 👨🏻🌾 Jonas 👩🏻 Lainey 👨🏻🌾 Abram
In addition to other “good guys” and “bad guys” readers meet throughout the story.
Despite being a “clean” read – this does have some disturbing themes to it. There mention of domestic violence as well as the main story pertaining to human trafficking. There are also themes of grief, as well as a death in childbirth.
Alford wastes little time in getting to the action. We know that Charlotte is still affected by the death of her fiancé Ryan, the man who’d trained her K-9 Annie. Charlotte thought his death was as suspicious as the death of the girl they were looking for (Michaela).
However, Charlotte can’t think about that. She’s trying to track down the granddaughter of a neighbor. Lainey is missing and it isn’t like her. As a favor to Dottie, Charlotte takes Annie to track down the younger woman. As it is on her off-time, Charlotte doesn’t report in to the Sheriff’s department.
Jonas is living on a ranch in a self-imposed seclusion because of the death of his wife Ivy and their unborn baby. He blames himself for what happened six (6) years earlier. He isn’t the same man he was, and thus drifted from his faith. However, the still keeps some ways as he hasn’t completely embraced Englisch life – driving a car, or shaving his beard.
He lives near an unsavory person (Harley), and has a feeling something is going on. He knows Harley isn’t kind to his wife (Betty). He’s had bad suspicions over the past six (6) years, but nothing to prove them. Yet, it is when he witnesses Charlotte’s jeep being driven by Harley that he springs into action.
It isn’t just Charlotte’s life he saves, but Lainey’s as well. There’s more – the comings and goings at Harley’s place lead back to a human trafficking ring. Hoping he can find some redemption for letting Ivy down; he stays by Charlotte’s side to help her find the girls that Lainey had been held with.
Jonas leads the women to Abram’s house. Given the situation, Abram agrees to help out – namely get Lainey to the local police department to backup Charlotte. The two “couples” split up. Both Jonas and Charlotte realize that getting to the women is paramount, not knowing how long they’ve been held or what is going to happen. Despite being a Pacifist, Jonas knows he would do anything to help Charlotte, as well as the women being held by Harley and his unsavory associates.
Jonas blames himself for not being more observant, and Charlotte is wondering why Harley got by with as many misdeeds as he did. However, the questions and even their “feelings” that are growing for each other have to wait until they find the women. They’re dangerously outnumbered and time is not on their side. Charlotte begins to wonder if Ryan and Michaela’s deaths were really the accidents they were made out to be, or could they be connected to what is going on?
Jonas and Charlotte both have a second chance at love, if they can not only survive, but let go of the guilt they carry for their loved ones’ deaths.
Deadly Mountain Escape is packed with non-stop action, peril; and along the way; the main characters have a redemption arc. It was interesting to see two drastically different people – Jonas (Amish) and Charlotte (Englisch) – have a similar experience with grief and loss.
I was drawn right in and EASILY could’ve read this in a day had I not been sick. I honestly was upset that I couldn’t read it as much as I’d wanted because it really was hard to put down. It was everything a book in this genre should be – suspenseful, intense, riveting, at times even downright sinister. That’s not to say the other books in the line haven’t been, but this was definitely high on the intensity factor. Even though this was a romantic suspense novel, it leaned more towards suspense with only 10% focusing on the romance part. The romance was more like a reward for seeing their mission through, as well as coming to terms with situations outside their control that caused the death of their loved ones.
One thing I found interesting was the lack of the “shunning” that often takes place when an Amish person is baptized into the faith but leaves for whatever reason. Much like Jonas had done – he left because he lost his faith and was no longer “that” person. Once a baptized person leaves, they are “shunned” and their families are not to associate with them.
Not to spoil the story angle, but that “issue” comes up when Abram (an Amish man) stands up for someone at an Englisch wedding, and other Amish family members attend. Unless the parties getting married are Amish, it was my understanding that Amish members cannot be part of the wedding (one standing up for another). These two “rules” have been addressed in other books both from LI and LIS that often are Amish-centric. I was a bit curious as it seemed a slight departure from the other books.
Then again, that’s what I love about Alford’s books – they take a departure from where the reader thinks the story is going, or what it should be. That’s not always a bad thing – but it was definitely interesting.
Since this is part of the Christian line from Harlequin Books, and also as an “Amish” theme – there will be references to God (Gott) and prayer. These are central to the characters’ faith, but not in an overwhelmingly “preachy” manner.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Alford has planned next – either through Revell or Love Inspired Suspense.
I usually like this author’s books. This one was good, just a little unbelievable in places. Hence the rating. I have a problem separating the fantasy of multiple encounters with bad guys and you keep escaping, to the reality of what would happen in real life. This book reads more like an action movie script. Too many captures, too many escapes to be reality. If you look at this book as being fantasy, then you will like it.
DEADLY MOUNTAIN ESCAPE by Mary Alford is the toe-curling suspense story of Deputy Charlotte Walker, her K-9 partner Annie – a bluetick coonhound, and Jonas Knowles.
Charlotte is still trying to put the pieces of her life back together after the death of Ryan, her beloved fiancée who was also a K-9 trainer & member county search & rescue team. Although it had been ruled an accident, Charlotte had her doubts on the ruling, but mostly she blamed herself because she was the one that called him out to help on a case even though she knew he was sick. Over a year later, she still carries that guilt.
Jonas once thought he had it all - the woman he loved by his side, a baby on the way and a home he had built for them to live as a family. He lost it all with the death of both is wife and his child. His home became just a house he couldn’t ever see himself living in again. He left everything – his property, his family and his faith – behind and moved to an area in the Ruby Valley of Montana. He bought some property and was content to live alone distancing himself from everyone. Although he was in the Englisch world, some of his Amish ways seemed to stay with him.
Even though off duty, when she got a call from Dottie Marques, a neighbor that is a prime example to the true meaning to the old saying of forged in steel and Montana strong, to please help her find Lainey, her 20-year-old granddaughter. The last she knew was that she was going to the old Christian camp not far from the Tobacco Root Mountains that she called her thinking spot. Being off duty, she went without letting anyone know where she was going and in her own personal car. She was to find out later this had been a very big mistake.
When Jonas saw Charlotte passing by his place, he wondered where she was headed and what for, but didn’t put too much thought into it until he saw Harley Owens, his neighbor, that seemed to take pleasure in beating his wife – who he had help many a time, pass in Charlotte’s car at a high rate of speed after he had heard gunshots coming from that direction. In his heart, he knows there was trouble brewing. He knew he couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. Can he follow them and get there in time to prevent another tragedy in his life? Will saving Harley’s two victims lead him on a dangerous adventure alongside Charlotte? Will they be able to figure out what’s going while having to run for their lives? With Charlotte’s determination to get to the bottom of things, have her unraveling more than just finding one 20-year-old woman? Can she accept help from someone that’s not on the police force or does she have a choice? Will being Charlotte’s backup interfere with his faith, which isn’t as lost as he thought? Can they find the girls they are looking for before they disappear? Will Jonas’ brother, Abram, and Lainey be able to get to a place that the phone works in order to report what’s going on and send help? Will their call bring help or be intercepted by the wrong people? With danger around every corner, being shot out and chased at every turn, as well as total exhaustion and frigid temperatures and snowy conditions win out over their desire to find answers and proof to prove them? Along the way can they each find a way to deal with the past and put their grief and guilt behind them?
DEADLY MOUNTAIN ESCAPE is a fabulous story that will keep you turning pages on this can’t put down book. The danger and suspense will keep your adrenaline pumping as you search for clues on what’s going on right alongside Charlotte and Jonas. Mary Alford has us falling in love with the characters and hoping they can forgive themselves to enable them to move forward. Their situation has them learning to trust one another, working as a team and protecting each other’s back side as they follow the breadcrumbs of clues in order the figure out the bigger scheme of things. Throw in the way the author gave us a realistic winter setting in the mountains and danger at every turn all make this an exception read. As they learn more about each other and their similar feelings of guilt, this reader was hoping for a spark to ignite and I wasn’t disappointed in the starting of a sweet romance. This is most definitely a FIVE STAR book that I can wholeheartedly recommend to everyone. The words on the cover - Love Inspired Suspense and Inspirational Romance – describe DEADLY MOUNTAIN ESCAPE perfectly. #deadlymountainescape #maryalfordbooks #romanticsuspense #LoveInspiredSuspense #InspirationalRomance
I receive an ARC of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.
Deadly Mountain Escape by Mary Alford Can this officer stop a trafficking ring? Or will deadly criminals stop her first? A search for a missing young woman becomes a nightmare for K-9 deputy Charlotte Walker when she stumbles on a trafficking ring and is captured. Death seems certain until she’s rescued by rancher Jonas Knowles. Together, they take shelter in the Amish community he left behind. But they can’t hide forever—not when the criminals are still after them and countless girls are at risk… This is Jonas Knowles and Charlotte Walker's story. Jonas Knowles wiped his forehead as he surveyed the fence line. As much as he wanted to get it finished today, the woman he’d recognized as a deputy for the county wouldn’t get out of his head. It had been several hours since she’d passed his place. The only other residence down the dead-end road was Harley’s. She hadn’t been going there on official business because she was in her personal vehicle. Why had she come down this way in the first place? Deputy Charlotte Walker stepped out onto the porch. Her neighbor Dottie Marques turned troubled eyes her way. “I know it’s hard, but please try not to worry,” Charlotte said. “I’m sure there’s a valid explanation for why she didn’t come home after work last night.” Yet the pit in Charlotte’s stomach disagreed with those words. “Thank you,” Dottie said. “I know I’m probably being an overprotective grandmother, but Lainey is the only family I have, and she wouldn’t stay away so long without calling.” The older woman shuddered. “I’m so afraid. I can’t lose her.” “This will help.” Charlotte held up the pink argyle garment that belonged to Lainey. “Annie should be able to get Lainey’s scent from it.” I recommend this book. Deadly Mountain Escape by Mary Alford is a wonderful well written 5 star book. If you like to read amish and Suspense stories you will love this book. I am looking forward to reading more books by Mary Alford. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I really enjoy the LOVE Inspired books. I have read books by Mary Alford before and I really enjoy her writing. Deadly Mountain Escape is her latest book and I had the pleasure to read it recently.
Charlotte Walker is part of the K9 unit. She and her K9 partner, Annie, are searching for a missing woman. Danger lurks for her when she stumbles upon a trafficking ring and is captured. Jonas Knowles is a former Amish turned rancher and he comes to her rescue. The pair, especially Jonas, is very focused on helping break up the ring and rescue the girls who were captured by the human trafficking ring. They continue to run into danger, including weather issues. Charlotte and Jonas find themselves falling for each other as they spend more time together. Will they rescue the missing woman? Will there be a relationship between Charlotte and Jonas?
I LOVE a book that keeps me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning and this book did just that. The storyline was soo suspenseful and I could not put the book down. Charlotte and her K9 partener are amazing, especially when they discovere the Human Trafficking ring. Jonas is probably my favorite character as he truly does the right thing and rescues the women. Charlotte and Jonas took things slow in a relationship as they both had things from their past that they were holding "guard' to. They were able to work through their past losses and learn to love again. The book is one of Faith, Love, Danger and Courage. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Suspense! GREAT BOOK!
Two souls that each carry a heavy burden find solace in one another as they fight for their lives, while also trying to seek the truth, in Deadly Mountain Escape. Both Jonas and Charlotte are characters that you can root for as they try to take down a very powerful trafficking ring while trying to rescue a group of young girls and stay alive themselves. This heart pounding novel had me staying up late into the night to see its conclusion and I am not even mad about it. Sadly, I live in an area where human trafficking is a very real threat and is a problem that I have always taken seriously, so this subject hit very close to home. This is a real problem that I wish could be solved but, like the novel shows, the corruption can go higher than you can possibly imagine.
Mary Alford did an incredible job of keeping the readers attention as we follow Charlotte and Jonas’s quest to shed light on this horrible ring, while also dealing with their own personal guilt and trying to find forgiveness within themselves. The heart that this novel has is palpable, the action and suspense is almost nonstop, and the whispers of faith being breathed here and there make this novel a quick favorite.
*I have reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
What an exciting read! I highly recommend it. Lots of twists and turns that will keep you invested until the story is finished. I love how the Amish are included in this fast action novel. A side that you rarely see. The Amish usually don't like to be involved in police business. These two were very unique and that's what I liked about them. This novel will keep your heart thumping all the way through for certain sure. I like how the characters relied on each other to get them through whatever was going on. I also loved how the author showed that some people aren't who they seemed to be. Especially cops. You can never trust people. A sheep in wolf's clothing, deception whatever u want to call it. Its why I'm disappointed in the police department altogether. Especially here in Daytona. Makes me angry at times so I really wasn't surprised with this book. Poor Charlotte! But the Lord does what's best for us in His own time does He not? I'd like to think so. 5 stars for a job well done! I highly recommend this book. Romance, deception and suspense? What's not to love?! This book has a little of everything a reader could want. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I was so bored with this story that I struggled to get through it.
Charlotte goes looking for Lainey alone in a secluded area where a lunatic lives close by. Another case of a supposedly smart woman and in this case a law enforcer doing stupid stuff. And so the action begins.
Jonas meets up with Charlotte and becomes her unofficial partner. From there we spend 16 chapters running around the woods trying to get out and avoiding the bad guys. How is it that Charlotte and Jonas had guns at different times and chose to fight four men instead of using their weapons? And how was it that one man and one woman could beat and escape four nasty men? According to Charlotte there were at least a dozen men after her and Jonas and yet they couldn’t capture Charlotte and Jonas? This whole story was unbelievable.
It was drawn out and also boring more often than not. How many times did we have to hear the stories of Ivy and Ryan and the guilt that Jonas and Charlotte felt about their deaths? And the kicker. You have two people running for their lives, trying to avoid being killed and in all of this they’re thinking romantic thoughts of each other. That would be the last thing on my mind.
As I finish this review I’m asking myself, why did I keep reading this book.
Deadly Mountain Escape is a wonderful suspense-filled novel that you’re going to love reading! I couldn’t stop reading! There was suspense! There was a great plot. And the characters were wonderful as well. Plus, you’ll be kept wondering what was going to happen next!
I could not put the novel down! But I knew that starting the book. Because this is an author I’m familiar with and her novels always rivet me. I love the Amish/law enforcement conglomeration within the novel. One man who is no longer Amish though he still lives like he is. And then there is the plot. It’s so fast-moving!
You’re not going to want to miss this novel! Grab your copy, settle in with a drink and a comfy blanket, and be prepared to lose yourself in the novel!

Deputy Charlotte Walker can't ignore a plea from a grandmother worried about her granddaughter Lainey. Charlotte had no idea what she was getting into when she promised to find Lainey. Widower Jonas Knowles was Amish before the death of his wife and child. He jumps into help when he realizes that Charlotte is in danger. Both main characters are very likeable and admirable. I really wanted that HEA for them, but there was much to overcome. This thrilling plot has so many twists and turns that my interest never waned. Author Mary Alford develops her characters well without ever letting up on the action. The dialogue flows well and seems natural to each character. Faith is woven into the story seamlessly. Oh, I can't forget Annie. You'll fall for the K-9. Her loyalty, obedience, and skill helps save lives. I would definitely read more from this author and am very comfortable recommending her to family and friends. I received a complimentary copy and am sharing my opinion of this extremely well-written book.
Have you ever fallen in love with a character that's a bluetick coonhound? Yes, Annie is Deputy Charlotte Walker's K-9 partner and she's a special part of Mary Alford's newest book. There's also a strong male character to help Charlotte and Annie as they search for a missing young woman. Will taking refuge in an Amish community lead to Jonah Knowles's return to the Amish faith that he once walked away?
Deadly Mountain Escape has so many elements that I love, including heart-pounding danger, hold-your-breath suspense, and emotional conflict. Can Charlotte and Jonas find relief from the grief and guilt that they've each experienced for so long? Will they finally overcome their doubts and learn to fully trust in God?
This is another captivating story from a favorite suspense author. Grab a copy if you're looking for mystery, romance, and an inspiring faith message. I recommend Deadly Mountain Escape to all who enjoy romantic Christian suspense.
