The Mate Games: Death #4

Heartless Villain

Rate this book
Captain Hook isn’t loyal to anyone, but I’d die for her.

Once I was a prince, then I became a lost boy, then their king. Now, I’m nothing more than a heartless villain.

Or at least so I thought. Until I met her. Until I had a reason for that husk in my chest to resume its beating.

I know I’m not alone. She’s worked her magic on all of us.

Her monstrous beast

Her vengeful dragon

Her merciless god

And of course me, her mad pirate

I’ve been trapped far from home, without my crew, without my ship. A captain with no purpose. But Dahlia is my port in the storm. She calls me to her and grounds me. Unfortunately, it’s not enough. With every passing tick, tick, tick, my madness grows.

How can I protect her when I can barely remember who I am?

Something dark is coming for us all. It’s been hiding in the shadows, but now it’s time to play in the light. And even without a compass to guide me, I’ll fight for her until the bitter end.

For fans of Supernatural and American Horror Story, USA Today bestselling authors Meg Anne and K. Loraine are thrilled to bring you another installment in the Mate Games Universe.

Warning: The Mate Games: Death is a spicy paranormal series with a cast of antiheroes utterly devoted to their heroine (even if they haven’t realized it yet). It contains a cursed Novasgardian berserker with primal energy, a dastardly pirate captain who deals in pixie dust, a possessive fae dragon shifter who is fond of hand necklaces, and a mysterious Southern gentleman who’d show her what he liked if only he could remember.

✅ Reverse harem
✅ Smut
✅ Slightly unhinged love interests
✅ Multiple POVs
✅ Magic / Shifters / Vampires / Demons
✅ Pace / Quick read
✅(🆗) Main character
🆗 Overall apocalypse plot
🆗(❌) Anti-climactic ending of the “bad gal”
❗️❗️Trigger warnings: death of loved one

I was hoping for more.

In this final book of the series, Death's plot is finally revealed, and time is running out for Dahlia and her men. They are in the middle of it all, even if they don't realize it, and are more focused on trying to escape Blackwood than finding out who Death is and what her plan entails.

I am rereading the first series (War) and I realized that everything seemed more dire and serious in War. Everyone important was a part of the secret group and was aware of the prophecy and the threat of the Apocalypse. In the second, almost no one besides the residents of the little Alaskian town was involved and in this third series, it was pretty much the same. Nobody besides the residents of Blackwood seemed to be involved until the second half of this book, when suddenly there was a meeting of the secret society tasked with saving the world, and Gabriel decided to intervene. I am sorry, but it was too little too late to have a real impact on the series. I still felt that the stakes were not as high, and the situation was not as dire in this book because of the lack of outside involvement.

Death’s identity is finally revealed, and it saddens me to say that, as was the case for the Ripper’s identity, I was not surprised at all. Also, the fight scene between Death and Dahlia’s group felt so anti-climactic. I was hoping more, expecting it actually. Instead, it was over way too quickly and easily to be satisfying.

I feel that this book was mostly dialogue and smut, with little “true” action and plot. It felt a little disappointing after reading the two previous series. I was also hoping for more of Caspian’s backstory, but it was lacking. We learn (almost) nothing new about him, his past, or why exactly he was losing his mind. It is vaguely explained, but once again, I was hoping for more.

Dahlia is not a bad main character, but I like her less than Sunday and Rosie. She just didn’t leave that much of an impression on me. I can’t pinpoint why exactly, but I don’t care about her that much. Her men were all very nice, charismatic, and sexy, too, but I find that they lack the chemistry that Sunday’s and Rosie’s group have. Because of that, I was not as invested in their story, sadly.

Also, while I know that there is one final series coming in 2025, I still have questions about this book and the events that occurred in the second half of it. Kiki was coming to save Dahlia, saying that she had Earth-shattering revelations to share with her, but we never learned what those revelations were and it’s killing me. Also, it is casually mentioned that Blackwood’s wards were finally down near the end of the book, but we never learn how it happened, and I am curious about it since it was such a big deal throughout the series. I just feel that many sub-plotline were just hastily tied up in this book, leaving an overall feeling of something not quite completed.

HOLD UP, THE FINAL MATE GAMES SERIES ISN'T COMING TILL 2025??? DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG THAT IS??? WAHHHHHHH. I'm already going through withdrawal. Hopefully there's something else in store for us while we wait (I have no hints, I'm just throwing that out there hoping it sticks).

OKAY SO, the ending was the most perfect ending x100, the epilogues were just so sweet and funny, I loved seeing cameos from other characters yet again (my favourite couple in the whole universe included, if you know you know). And THAT BONUS SCENE!!! STOP MY HEART CAN'T TAKE THE CUTENESS!!!!!!!

I've been holding off on reading the bonus scenes, because I figured it would be fun to read all of them at the end of the series and I JUST...WHO'S CRYING? ME? YES. That little puppy really is the goodest boy. Can't believe we got a crossover there too, mind blown in the best way.

All of those epilogues/bonuses had me smiling from ear to ear, the bloopers too. Now I fear I'll require bloopers after all the audiobooks I listen to, I've been so spoiled.

Plot wise, this is the closest we've gotten to an actual apocalypse, and I gotta tell miss ma'am Death what a good job she did!! So many twists I didn't see coming. I'm (almost) sad she lost? Like, she put so much effort into this, only for her plans to be foiled. Poor Death, let me give you a hug. She's my favourite villain in the series so far, even though the guys are technically villains too, but you know what I mean.

Speaking of resident hot villains, dear ol' Captain Hook had me laughing out loud yet again. His good mood is really contagious, I swear it made my headache better. If I said that he's my favourite Mate Games character ever, would the others be mad at me? HOPEFULLY NOT, THERE'S ENOUGH LOVE TO GO AROUND!! I just think Kim & Meg struck gold with Caspian, and I would not be opposed to more pirate characters in the future.

OH! Gotta mention this so I don't forget, that *IMPROVED* J. M. Barrie quote at the start really got me. I was giggling from the get go.

Now for the other three gents, are we ready? Yes? I know I always do a final ranking type of thing but...I don't know how to rank them this time. I love Tor, Kai and Cain/Hades equally. So I'll just say that I love how much they developed over the series, how close they got to each other and how all of Dahlia's men now function like a well oiled machine. They're still jealous from time to time, but they can properly share.

Also, I find it very fitting that Kai got to do the thing first. You'll know which thing when you get to it, hah.

Dahlia, meanwhile, finally came into her own, mastered her powers (for the most part), and became truly free with expressing her desires, that's my girl!! I love her so much, she's living the dream.

I don't remember if I ever mentioned Kiki in my reviews? Maybe, possibly? Either way, she was simply fabulous in this one. She's a true friend and would go to hell and back for Dahlia, quite literally. She had a bigger role here than in the past books which was honestly deserved.

We got a little sneak peak into the next series, I was wondering where that storyline was going and I'm glad we finally have an answer. I just wish we didn't have to wait so long to see it.

Lastly, stellar performance by all the narrators as always, these books and their narration make life worth living.

P. S. If you still haven't started this brilliant series, I'm judging you.

Another amazing series by these two authors! I can't wait for Apocalypse!!

“If you want it, love, I can help you feel me from the inside.” “Kai,” she said with a laugh, “I never took you for a Nine Inch Nails fan.” “Nine inches of what?” “Hopefully your dick.” I grinned. “Oh, it’s bigger than nine inches.”

---I absolutely love the Nine Inch Nails reference!!! Especially when its the lyrics to my favorite song of theirs.

Caspian will always be on the top of my list out of these guys. Even though I loved them all. Caspian just has a vulnerable villain-y way about him that I can't get enough of.

Caspian 💜
Kai
Hades
Tor

Now that this is the final book in the series, I can say the full-cast audiobook narration is fantastic. I love all the main characters in the story. The banter, tension and spice are brilliant. I was laughing and so interested in where this was going. I do recommend it for a fantastic audiobook. I do have overall series thoughts. I have been looking for answers to what is going on with the storyline since the start. I mentioned I’m struggling to grasp why things are happening. Finishing this last book, I’m still lost. Maybe it’s just me? I am not familiar with the gods and hell storyline other than the brief stories I have heard. I didn’t visualise clearly where these characters were a lot of the time, for example, rooms, buildings and outdoor areas. Any characters outside of the main cast, I would forget who they were and why they come into play.
Overall, the series is good, but I couldn’t grasp an understanding of why all of it was happening.

Talk about an epic conclusion!! Dahlia and her men had me in a chokehold right up until the very end and even then, there were a few surprises that had me sobbing into my coffee.

Stella Hunter, J.F. Harding, Jason Clarke, John Hartley, James Joseph and Samantha Brentmoor all came together for a full-cast narration unlike anything you've ever seen! James Joseph constantly compelled me with his narration of Hook and then Samantha Brentmoor as Kiki and Dor. Masterson I mean COME ON!! That wicked little laugh she does! Brilliant, nothing short of brilliant.

To be honest, my entire journey through the Death series in The Mate Games world had me going back and forth who to love and who to hate. Dahlia instantly had me from the very first page of book one because not only was she a strong and hilarious author, but she was also plus sized. And there is nothing I love more than a bit of positive plus- size representation.

The spice? It is Kim and Meg folks; you know the spice was there in abundance and just when you think your knickers can't handle more, they will throw you one last scene that will those knickers positively incinerated.

While we are not quite done with The Mate Games world, I will be not so patiently waiting for next year when we get what I could only assume to be Famine.

A tad disappointed in the ending of this one, but I suspect there’s a special reason for it; perhaps due to the next series in this universe - MG Apocalypse. We shall see.

Now that I’ve had time to think and process everything that’s happened in the last 4 books… this is the best worst series. Loved the idea, world and characters. Very fun and creative concept overall. I enjoyed seeing everything play out (some of those plot twists were in fact a bit twisted)and had good pacing.
However… this is some of the cringiest writing I’ve ever read and it was a bit hard for me to overlook. It’s one thing for the concept or idea of a shadow daddy to be portrayed and expected, but it’s another for “shadow daddy” to continuously be written and said in a book. A lot of the things the characters say are so cringe I had to set the book down.
But… I digress. It will hurt your soul to have to read that much cringe dialogue, but it’s worth the read.
Now I leave you with this; why settle for 1 man, when you could have 4?🤷🏾‍♀️
Absolute WHORES! All of them!!

This book didn't live up to the rest of the books. It seemed like the authors were just trying to wrap up the ending. I did love the references to other book characters as well as movies. There is a sad incident that was made bearable, and I can't wait to find out more about that storyline.
The fight scene wasn't as interesting as the other two horsewomen, although Death was deemed winner of her game because of who she was able to release

The epilogues leave a lot to look forward to in 2025 when the next book releases, I hope it lives up to all my expectations.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This series as a whole was..ok. If you want spice this series has it in spades. The first 3 books are almost only character driven with very little plot, whereas this book has a bit more plot. I would recommend the audiobooks over reading because the cast did such an amazing job and was the only reason I continued with this series.

Wow, what an ending!!!

What I loved most about each mate games series is that it is literally a movie in my head.

I loved every minute of the mates game death. My theories were always wr
ong I swooned and I blushed and I laughed sooo much and cried!!

I love Dahlia and her men and the relationship they have together between the banter with the guys and the love they share for each other.

I listened to the audiobook, and it was amazing as usual, and I feel like these books should only be experienced through audio.

Stella Hunter, as Dahlia, is honestly pure perfection her delivery of Dahlia wittyness and her inner monologue and the emotion she added to Dahlia her talent amazes me!!

J.F. Harding as Hades was outstanding with his softness with Dahlia and then demanding possessiveness when needed. He was the perfect choice for Hades also the way he says baby doll 😏

James Joseph as Hook might be my favourite of his performances when I first heard his voice. I wanted to him voice Hook and I got my wish and it was everything!!! He comedic timing he adds to Hooks lines and the emotion he added he just made me love Hook so much more.

Jason Clarke as Tor is everything growly and soft for Dahlia, but my favourite is probably he portrayal of asshole the accent, and they way he protays him just makes me so giggly and Iove every minute of it!!

John Hartley talent amazes me the accents he can deliver and the way he sounds as Kai and then as his dragon really blows me away!!

Samantha Brentmoor is the best addition to the Mate games. I loved her delivery of Kiki she just added the best friend energy, and you could really feel, especially when Kiki fan girls. The betrayal as a certain side character was amazing and made me annoyed because of the character and what she was doing hut like so happy because she portrayed it soooo well.

I can't wait for the next series 😍😍

I loved Dahlia so much. But I really felt the ending was so rushed so that was disappointing. I really wanted / needed more. In the end I still hated hook LMAO, and was even more obsessed with Hades. Overall I still loved it and would recommend it to anyone who loves paranormal / fantasy romances.

I am absolutely OBSESSED with the finale of this series! The twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Each moment of the mate’s games left me gasping for air, and I was shocked by how off my predictions were. This book made me laugh, swoon, blush, AND shed some tears. The bonds between Dahlia and her men are everything - their witty banter, unwavering loyalty, and fiery love for each other had me completely captivated. And let me tell you, my anticipation for the next series is unreal - I cannot contain my excitement!

Overall great ending! I was mildly disappointed that the final "fight" ended so quickly, but then all the stuff in the aftermath made up for it! I haven't read anything else from these authors that I'm aware of but I'm a fan now! Really solid smut, does a great job of hitting SO MANY KINKS! And again, the series doesn't take itself too seriously. It's just good fun the whole way through. I'm so salty that we didn't get a name for Kiki's ghost lover though! Guess I have to wait until next year and see where we go next!

Cerberus is my favorite though he wins the day for the whole series 🤣❤️

------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Plot 💬:

If emotional damage was a sport, Heartless Villain would be an Olympic event. This final book takes everything Dahlia and her crew have been building and explodes it in the best way. You want a clean, safe happy ending? Giiirl, this is The Mate Games. You’re getting betrayal, grief, murder, revelations, who-dunnit's and one emotionally devastating Asshole (IYKYK).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Audiobook 🎧:

The cast didn’t just deliver, they annihilated. This full-cast production was done sooooo well. Every narrator showed up with their A game and made it sound like these characters were breathing right next to me. Like, I needed a moment.

Stella Hunter as Dahlia: Honestly? Stella is unmatched. Her delivery was sharp, emotional, and so in tune with Dahlia’s descent into her own. The inner monologues alone deserves an award.

J.F. Harding as Hades: Big, brooding energy with the perfect amount of menace and possessiveness. His “baby doll” lines with that southern drawl had me feral. Peak Shadow Daddy performance.

James Joseph as Hook: James nailed that smirking, deadly charm and unhinged energy that Hook had. His comedic timing and voice acting added depth to the chaos and even to the side characters. You couldn’t help my love Hook. Ugh, my heart!

Jason Clarke as Tor: As always, Jason knocks his performances out of the park. Gentle but powerful. The way he portrayed Tor’s quiet strength and softness with Dahlia gave me chills.

John Hartley as Kai: This man! The dragon boy had range, okay?? John balanced the teasing, possessive alpha vibes with genuine emotion, and I felt that shift.

Samantha Brentmoor as Kiki / Dr Masterson: I didn’t really take Kiki as a standout character… BUT, then Samantha happened. Her voice brought so much depth and nuance to a character I was prepared to love and cry for. 100%, completely won over.

This cast straight-up delivered a theatrical experience. No skips. No weak links. Just chaos, trauma, and elite voice acting from start to finish.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sizzle Scale:

Scorching: 🔥 5/5 – The spice? Violent. The filth? Inventive. The tension? Fermented for years and aged to perfection. Also, one scene broke the spice scale and maybe my brain.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bookish Bite:

This finale was feral. Funny. DEVASTATING. I was crying, blushing, and fighting for my life on every page. The found family? The betrayal arcs? The character growth? K.Loraine and Meg Anne really gave us EVERYTHING in this book.

Also, the epilogues and bonus content were the perfect way to end this instalment. This is what happens when authors actually love their readers. It’s fan service in the best way. Every “MINE” moment, every soft villain redemption, every petty bicker and deadly kiss was crafted to absolute perfection. Chef’s kiss.

What a way to end the series. This is book 4 of this specific story and needs to be read in sequence as the story is cumulative. It's totally bingeable so if you haven't started yet, you're ready to rock. Start at Death book 1 and roll straight through.

This conclusion had it all. Laughter (thank you Hook and Kiki), Anger (so many WTF moments), Tears (my heart hurt!!!), Spicy spice times (group activities make for excellent Christmas presents) and melty swoony moments (these men will do anything for their gal and their HEA is well deserved). I adore the way they weave in crossovers with other series. I recognized several and am also looking forward to reading/listening to the ones I haven't experienced yet. The fact that it's all connected and I'm given series/stories to explore while I wait for the next one, it's fantastic.

After the way this one ended, I am eagerly anticipating the next series coming in 2025. I need a time machine so I can get there. I guess I'll just have to go back and finish War and Pestilence (and then revisit Death) in the mean time.

The audiobook was performed in duet style by a full cast of amazing talent.
- Stella Hunter is our Dahlia and brings most of the female characters to life. Seeing her fully embody her powers and put the pieces together really made for a satisfying conclusion. She went on an emotional ride in the climactic moments, but it was so powerful to experience.
- Jason Clarke is Tor, our Beast of Novosguard. So deeply torn with his personal demons and having to bring together who he used to be with who he is now that he is more beast than man. He is also Asshole, one of my absolute favourite scene stealing side characters.
- John Hartley is Kai the Scottish dragon shifter. I absolutely love how deeply engrained in his soul it is to care for Dahlia. I would love to have someone take such care of me, especially when I'm in a position where caring for myself is hard.
- James Joseph is our Fae Pirate, Hook. I started the series loving Hook and then he took a little bit of a back seat, but when he steps up, he steps up. As broken and eccentric as he is, Hook brings a lightness to every scene he's in and it's an art to make me laugh out loud in general, let alone in the middle of a spicy scene.
- JF Harding is our Shadow Daddy Cain, if you've read in sequence you know who he is, but just in case, I'm being careful. I love this character so much. His dominance, his protectiveness, sometimes a little playful, it's great.
- Samantha Brentmoor brings us Dr. Masterson, Kiki and Death. Kiki is the bestest ever best friend. I want a Kiki! I will never not say this. I want more Kiki!!! I love Samantha's performances in this one. She's got 3 characters but they are all so different and just a perfect example of her range and flexibility. love it!!

There's a side character named Janine and it made me stupidly giddy-happy to hear JF Harding say my name multiple times. I got one from Jason Clarke and a couple from Stella as well.

I requested and was provided with an advanced copy of both the eBook and Audiobook. These are my honest opinions.

F*cking fantastic!! Perfection of an ending to this amazing series. I feel so sad because I loved these books so much, that I feel like I’m loosing friends 😭. That ending! It felt so f*cking satisfying as that epilogue progressed for us to get a glimpse of every character’s final scene… it was just so good! Obviously I am excited for the next series, which will sadly be the last in The Mate Games world.

The narration of this book was f*cking fantastic! Duet , full cast narration with 9 narrators! Every single one of them did a f*cking fantastic job. I loved Samantha Brentwood as Kiki, she literally had me cackling! Stella Hunter always does an amazing f*cking job! She makes us feel what the character are feeling, that is how fantastic her acting is. J.F. Harding as Shadow Daddy…utter goddamn sploosh, his acting was top notch!! Jason Clarke was perfection as Tor, that damn deep voice *shivers*. I f*cking loved James Joseph as Hook, I could literally see him and that damn British accept is just panty melting. John Hartley and his Scottish accent?…*shivers again*. There were other narrators that I don’t want to tell you who they are, it’ll be a surprise! All this to say, I am recommending this book, this whole series to whoever will listen! Charge those toys b*tches and warn your significant other if you have one, because f*ck the smut was goddamn delicious! They really went out there…very f*cking creative… god I love these authors! Anyways, go read this b*tch!!!

This book started off like the rest of the books in the series, light and humorous but with a dark edge, then things went left. Things got a whole lot darker and the villain aspect (of the MCs) was dialed up. It was unexpected but still good. I was gasping, I had tears in my eyes on more than one occasion, and this book invoked a lot of feelings.

Somehow the book simultaneously went where I thought it was going and surprised me, plot and character-wise. I mean, I knew where the story was going but I was surprised by how we got there and by the characters' responses. I was sorta bothered by all the characters at the end, except for Kiki. She's my girl, I loved her and she was a true friend to Dahlia. I will say that the bonus epilogue did make me feel better about Dee and the guys, it was really great.

Heartless Villain was very entertaining with familiar faces, and lots of steam, and it sure AF got a lot darker, it wasn't my favorite book in the series but it was still a good one. Heartless Villain wraps up Death's game but there is still more to come and after that special bonus epilogue I really can't wait to see how things play out in The Mate Games: Apocalypse.

From all 4 books this book is my favorite! Love the whole ending! How everything came together. And the horsemen plotting revenge with Lillith and probably Gabriel! And Kiki, I literally cried when Death killed her! But honestly from the beginning I knew something was wrong with both doctors! Some places I got a bit annoyed bc I felt like even Hades wasn’t thinking clearly! Finally not so much smut! I get that this is about mates and they are all horny all the time, but why there needed to be so much sex in all 4 books! That part was annoying, bc I felt like almost a whole 2-3 book was only about sex and their relationship. Anw, this book had everything. The narrators were as well perfect. I don’t remember their names, sorry guys. However they made the books even better!
I suck in writing reviews so don’t judge.
Plot was good as always! Can’t wait for the next and I guess last series. I bet It is gonna be one hell of a ride Apocalypse! Considering probably the horseman will join in. I kind of like Gabriel, he is funny how he always pops up from nowhere dressed like a biker. I give 5/5⭐️.

Audiobook Review:

This is the last of The Mate Games: Death series and the next series will be The Mate Games: Apocalypse.

I loved these audiobooks! They’re so fun, mysterious and of course, spicy. I think this might be my favorite of the series because I kept laughing at all the references. Hozier, ACOTAR, Beauty and the Beast… nothing was safe 😆 And I just love Asshole the dog. He is the best!

This whole series was like a crazy movie in my head and I mean that in the best way. Why Choose will never be my favorite trope, but this series has been my favorite to listen to overall. You have to listen to them!

“Get out. You have a real-life Rhysand. No, better than Rhysand, because he’s a mothertrucking dragon.”

Oh, what a twist.

The Death Series was fantastic. I'd have to say Caspian is my favourite. He can dish it but can't take it 🤣 the banter he has between the guys and Dahlia is hilarious.

Now i have to "patiently" wait for the next set to come out.

The cast of narrators nailed it. Not surprising how well they did the other series.
It's recommended to read or listen to the Mate Games Series in order. Starting with The Mate Games:War

I think this set was my favourite yet. Absolutely brilliant. I had a great time listening and reading these books.

The whole cast did a great job on the audiobooks. Loved the little cameos. Loved that some bloopers were included, too, lol.

I'm so confused, lol. It's like it ended but didn't, and the next set in the series is not out yet. *cries* I don't know what I'm supposed to do with my life now... This world has been my whole personality since I read the 1st book on the mate games- war.

I really wish this series would have caught my attention sooner like the previous two. All in all I did enjoy it. I will be honest, I was starting to wonder how this one was going to get wrapped up but once information and details started popping up it was full on and everything seemed to all happen at once...lol!

The narrators are a massive part of why I enjoy this universe so much. They are all so amazing and I cannot wait to listen to Devotion and then onto the final series, Apocalypse!

The final book in this series and it was such a great ending.
Dahlia and her men finally getting their HEA was so great. While this wasn't my favorite of the 4 books it was still such a satisfying ending.
It kills me we have to wait until 2025 to get the next Mate Games series. These series are so incredibly entertaining and fun. I have to mention it again but if you aren't listening to these series on audio you are seriously missing out!!

Each of The Mate Games series has knocked it out the park and this one is no different. The banter, the plot, the characters, the 🌶️. Top tier.

Also, Asshole is my new favorite side character. Giving that big dog energy all day. IYKYK

This is book 4 in the mate games and the author saved the best for last. Dahlia and her 4 mates, Tor, Hook, Hades and Kai are in for the fight of their life. This is one story that kept me guessing right up to the bed. It is a stand alone book but reading the entire series is more fun. Everyone deserves a happy ending even villains.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
