This is an academic text presented in a methodical and systematic fashion to begin the familiarization process of readers with what is expected of the systems discussed, as well as major areas of countersystem operations. Readers should be aware that the book focuses primarily on ship-based systems but many of the concepts and physics discussed wll be relevant for systems operating in other areas of terrain.

Boord and Hoffman engage with a physics-based approach, working up from fundamentals within a subset of the system and into a more macro systems-based view. Readers should expect to become familiar with a generalized model for the situational response timeline (detection, decision-making, interception, looping back if necessary), the balancing act between weapon/interceptor performance and sensor system performance (a major topic discussed in good detail), how performance can be measured in a system, how improvement based on performance data can be considered and designed, the base physics of incoming fire, detection, response calculation, interceptor and other ordinance aiming and launch, as well as the end-stage physics of interception, and, most interestingly, what networked and natural vs electronic warfare engagement looks like - essentially, what does missle defense look like in a modern world, especially with consideration of timelines of development and construction, as well as the incentive structures and mentality of the government-business environment.
