the astrology portion is terrible and inaccurate! it looks like someone who just learned astrology yesterday wrote it based on very generic stereotypes. the dates for each sun sign arent even correct. cant say anything for the rest of the book because based on how shallow and bad the astrology portion was i didnt think the rest would have any truth to it
Provides an overview of several spiritual disciplines and arts: Astrology, Tarot, Palmistry, Numerology, and Enneagram.
While I did garner a few good insights and new bits of information, overall I found this book to be a strange combination of overwhelming and confusing. Because each of these arts are rather complex in their own right, I can see how distilling them down would be a challenge. In some cases I felt the author did a good job of this and in others she introduced very complex ideas and then glossed over the details in such a way as to leave me more confused than clear, ultimately leading me to seek other resources for clarity. I can’t really figure out who this book would be good for, due to these conflicting ideas. It’s a little too basic for someone with some knowledge on these topics to gain further insight, and a little too complex for someone just getting started in any of these areas.
I was also disappointed because she doesn’t really relate any of these areas of study to the others. Maybe because this is too complicated to put in a book for the general public, or maybe these arts don’t relate or overlap clearly enough, I don’t know. That is what I’d ultimately hoped to gain from this book though. I’ve done quite a bit of reading on the enneagram recently, I’ve dabbled off and on in numerology over the years, as well as astrology, albeit at a very basic level. I wanted to know things like: do Leo’s often show up in the Enneagram as certain numbers? How does my astrological sign inform my numerology insights or vice versa? Etc…
Also, I’m finding that I’m in between in a lot of areas, but especially:
Enneagram: Am I a 1 or a 7? Depends on which quiz I’m taking, and how the descriptions are framed, but both are always dominant and very close in number.
Numerology: there are a few constants of course, particularly as they relate to my birthdate, but the numbers derived from my name vary and I find I see a little of myself in each of the various descriptions they line up to. Especially my Soul and Personality numbers. These vary depending on if I count “y” as a vowel or not, as well as if I use my maiden or married name, yet they all resonate at some level.
The more I read, the more I’m finding that I walk a lot of lines. I’m either very well rounded and developed emotionally and spiritually, or I’m very gray and unclear and need to work towards better clarity of self. I’m not sure yet which it is, maybe both. This is frustrating at times, and empowering as well. Maybe someday I’ll find the clarity I’m looking for, but this book only gave me more questions. That isn’t necessarily bad, but I had hoped for something else, leaving me feeling more disappointment than satisfaction.
This book was obviously rushed. I checked out a digital version from my library. I skipped to the astrology section to take a look. It's bad. I see people reviewing it and mentioning the lack of scientific backing. LOL This book doesn't even have a foundation of the spiritual systems she's writing about. A quick scan of the astrological section, reveals that the basic introductory info is inaccurate.
I have be interested but weary of divination but this book has kit a fire in me like no other. I am in love with all of it now. Highly recommended for beginners.
The Secret Power of You by Meera Lester is the new book in town you need to know about. It contains a wealth of information geared to enhance your personal life journey. No special skills are required; you can jump right in and begin your individual transformation. Plus, the colorful cover makes this a great gift for those spiritual seekers in your world.
Essentially, this comprehensive guide provides all the tools you need to unlock the gifts of the universe using astrology, tarot, palmistry, numerology, and the Enneagram. Following the author’s easy but thorough instructions, you will learn the secrets of relationships and the deeper significance of your role in the universe.
Each section is unique. In astrology, for instance, you will discover that it’s not just about reading your horoscope in the village newspaper. I discovered so much I didn’t know concerning planetary dominion and sun signs. Lester unerringly plots your way through the intricacies with a fun and pithy style. (Note: there is a misprint in the astrology dates. I contacted the author who confirmed that subsequent editions will rectify this error. In the meantime, readers can go to Lester’s site, http://meeralester.com/mlls/Secret.pdf, for a printable bookmark with the correct dates.) In my own case, I just knew—once a Virgo, always a Virgo. The sidebars in this section are instructive and entertaining—“His Cheatin’ Heart (Aquarius), “The Boneyard in the Closet” (Virgo), “You’re a Prize, not a Trophy” (Gemini). I love that one. Finally, there’s sex. But you’ll have to read the book to find out about that.
My favorite chapter has to be the Tarot. I’ve always been intrigued by the mysterious allure of the cards. In this chapter, the cards are displayed, and Lester describes the power of the Tarot to “tap into your unconscious where hidden are vast stores of information and memories to use in your quest for greater self-knowledge” (67). I love the way the author breaks down the intricate symbolism of the cards. Of all the mystical disciplines, this one resonates with me the most, feels the most responsive in present time to gradations of fortune.

During my "summer of divination" (I themed my summers in college), I went to this free birth chart reading in Berkeley. There I was told that my signs indicated that I was power-hungry, traditional/afraid of difference, and extremely organized. I scoffed and told the woman that those traits didn't fit me at all. She said that maybe that's not how I liked to view myself, but it's what I was at my core. I got unreasonably offended by it, and decided that astrology was stupid because there's no way everyone born at the same time/place as me has the same personality.
But then it came out that maybe the dates have shifted (though actually it's shifted only in the Vedic/Hindu system - the western signs remain the same). And suddenly maybe I'm actually a Sagittarius with Gemini moon, and I've transformed from the crotchety, narrow-minded goat to the truth-telling centaur. Way better. Don't get me wrong, I still think astrology is religion and not science, but if people are going to try to label me a Capricorn, now I've got something to come back at them with.
Anyway, this book uses the vedic astrology, and that made me like it a lot better. It's fun for a quick skim, and totally jibes with my Type 4, obsessed navel-gazing.
I read this to find out if there's any science involved. Well, there isn't. Not one bit. It's a lot of jargon-filled fluff expanded to seem highly technical, researched, and scientific. That having been said, I'm amused at how some minds have been creative enough to think up this much baloney and make it sound convincing to so many people. Then again, this isn't really surprising as most humans want to believe in something, be it religion, destiny, fate, etc.
Some of this fluff is still fun to read, laugh at, and play with though. E.g. There are enneagram tests with amusing questions, and you can get free online tarot readings and interpret the results using the information in this book.
Recommended if you want to see for yourself just how unscientific astrology, tarot, palmistry, numerology and enneagram tests are, or if you just want to have some lighthearted fun and/or kill time.
I'm embaressed to say I read this. It was thorough but silly, and no backing of any kind. I found the astrology section confusing, the enneagram section interesting, the palm section pretty new and interesting. OK, but take with a giant grain of salt.
