Twenty years before the Fall . . .

If only they'd tell Konstantin why he needed to marry so soon, to the right woman. And not like his idiot brother eloping with . . . the daughter of Kon's new boss at the Bureau of Intelligence. And why should Kon marry this particular woman when her aunt was so much more interesting . . .
As Kon investigates government contract fraud, he begins to suspect his Family is involved . . .
This author is new to me. Apparently, this new work will be a branch from a long running series.
What impressed me, first, was the pace of world building. As a new reader, this was wholly foreign. Yet, the shape of the society and its culture was perfect. Itdid not leave me clueless by page 5, as so many novice authors do. Nor, were there endless background - and boring- character discussions to clue the reader into the milieu. Well Done!
The main characters were solid, understandable, and their actions consistent with who we come to find they are.
Plot, not immediately evident by page 10, and then painful for the next 200 pages.
Absorbing throughout.
Certainly recommended. As light reading to pass the time in an interesting fashion.
Pam Uphoff continues to produce one heartwarming story after another! What an insanely broad and extensive universe she has created!, full of twists and turns, new enemies, new heroes all coming from the most unlikely places! She shows that even in the most toxic societies, good people can still exist, fighting against their corrupt and depraved environment, even as they care for strangers and loved ones alike.
