Joe Wheeler has been labeled many things: as Father Christmas because of his editing/compiling America’s longest-running Christmas of story series — Christmas in My Heart (now in its 18th season); as one of America’s leading story anthologists (56 story collections by twelve publishing houses); as the world’s foremost authority on life and times of the frontier writer Zane Grey (he is co-founder and executive director of the international Zane Grey’s West Society); as a biographer, having written full-length biographies of Abraham Lincoln and St. Nicholas and shorter biographies of Louisa May Alcott, Abbie Farwell Brown, Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Gene Stratton Porter, Grace Richmond, Henryk Sienkiewicz, and Lew Wallace; and as a Renaissance Man because of his encyclopedic interest in everything (popular culture as well as the academic); and his master’s degree in the teaching of History, his master’s degree in English (thesis on Utopian and Dystopian literature), and his Vanderbilt doctorate in English (History of Ideas emphasis).
Because of all these variables, and stirring in his 71 books (and counting), this blog series promises to be unlike any other — and that’s why he titles the series, “UNCHARTED WATERS.”
This book was so beautiful and has easily worked its way into my top five favorite books. The writing was wonderful and the character development was so settle and yet very impactful. I loved Anne and her curiosity and imagination. I laughed a lot reading this book. I think having an almost 12 year old daughter also helped me to appreciate this story. I found so much likeness between Anne and my own daughter. I also enjoyed the love Marilla had for Anne and the deepening of their relationship throughout. I can’t wait to read it again!
Ah, I just love these types of stories and books - always have. It’s just sad that I didn’t read Anne of Green Gables when I was younger, but hey, it’s never too late. I’ll be reading all the books in the series. So many life lessons - so much hope and positivity - and such simple lives back then. If you’ve been curious about this book like I was for years and you like books set in the 19the century - then get this now.
I can't believe I am just now reading this..I grew up with the old movie and loved it and the book is even better. The emphasis on friendship, sacrificial love, kindness, imagination, and Anne's love of nature. I loved it all.
“Anne’s horizons had closed in since the night she had sat there after coming home from Queen’s; but if the path set before her feet was to be narrow she knew that flowers of quiet happiness would bloom along it. The joys of sincere work and worthy aspiration and congenial friendship were were to be hers; nothing could rob her of her birthright of fancy or her ideal world of dreams. And there was always the bend in the road!”
I realize that this is a beloved story for many but I couldn’t stand Ann. (Sorry friends who love this.) Reading this was like reading a version of Little Women in which the story is only told through Amy’s eyes and without Marme’s gentle guidance but only Aunt March’s.
I found Ann to be airheaded and self absorbed. During much of the book I just wanted her to stop her chattering. I will not recommend this book…ever.
An easy five star read. This is such a beautiful coming of age story of love and friendship and the best kind of chosen family. I only wish I had read it sooner.
