The Crawling introduces Bruce, Patricia, and Rambo (dog). Bruce is part of a specialized team that was originally formed to study and monitor gate activity, but the gates became too dangerous. Now they just shut them down. They quickly realize that the Shadow Pines gate is different than others before it, and the team is forced to evacuate.

"Invasion Event #4: The Crawling" is fourth in the series of five happenings in the "Darkness & Daemons" story. In this episode we are introduced to Bruce, a former pilot, and currently a member of Team 1 of a secret agency charged with closing the "gates" which appear at various times all over the globe. His team seldom has more than a couple hours advance warning before they must be at the site. After the gate opens, they have exactly 30 minutes to close it, or something terrible will happen: the infamous violet light pulse will flash again.
It turns out the brilliant violet flashes originate from within the gates. A new flash occurs every 30 minutes, and basically establishes a "restore" point for time. Really very similar to a computer establishing its own restore points, so that if something goes haywire with the system, the user can restore it to a previous point at which it is known everything worked correctly. The purpose of the gate's reset is apparently to cover its tracks, so to speak. If something were to go wrong, the next pulse would reset it to a time before "something went wrong", so the gate could take another approach at whatever it was attempting.
This time it appears things are going horribly wrong -- for the humans. The tarry black mist advances in columns through the air, and crawls along the ground as a liquid. Every sentient being it contacts becomes infected, mutating rapidly into some kind of unknown, gigantic alien bug, replete with multiple limbs, massive mouths full of razor sharp teeth, and powerful strength capable of piercing steel with its sharp, hardened limbs.
This time the rate of advance has greatly increased. The accuracy of the GPS position of the gate, on which they've always depended, is off by several miles, too far from the gate for them to do anything about it this time. Yet the alien black goo has advanced that entire distance in a matter of minutes. Various people, including many whom we've met in previous episodes, die from exposure to the goo. Nothing is behaving like is has at previous gate openings. The Team 1 helicopter, their backup plan loaded with explosives, has gone down and they cannot reach it to save Amber, the pilot. It is too late for Team 2 to drop conventional explosives into the gate. Team 3 is going to have to nuke the entire mountain very soon, before the crawling mass reaches the river, or the river will expedite its advance beyond any human ability to stop it.
Let's move on to meet Dr. Alexander Hunt, the "Professor", in "Invasion Event #5: The Infectious", the concluding segment of the "Darkness and Daemons" series.
