Slinky Espadrilles

Rate this book
Rich with vivid surrealism, this is poetry that holds up a mirror to our world and makes us look long and hard, and not be afraid to laugh. This is poetry polished in the spotlight of the stage, poetry that tears up the rule that says performance poetry does not transfer to the page.In the tradition of Adrian Mitchell and The Liverpool poets, Adrian Henri, Brian Patten and Roger McGough, this is poetry that is consistently accessible and entertaining. Although written primarily for the live experience of performance, this is an accomplished collection that demands a place on your bookshelf.

I saw Ash perform some of his poems as part of Nottingham's Festival of Words this year, and it was the first time I'd ever seen a slam poet, and I loved his style straight away: His mix of comedy, bizarre scenarios as well as important issues in life. I decided to buy this collection. The first poem I saw (from casually flicking through and choosing a page at random) was 'Travel Diary'. I read it and all it took was that one poem to convince me.
On reading the entire collection of poems, I have literally cried with laughing more than once, in particular over 'Free Range Eggs' and 'Whiplash'. I love the pure imagination that has been put into these poems. They are different, and they are brilliant.
Very happy reading!
