I think it was trying to cover the same ground as The Cat in the Hat. It had some great rhythms and silliness, so it's great to read aloud.

This is a cute fun book to read to young ones. However, once the word DUMB was used, my rating of it dropped drastically. It’s hard enough to stop my children from using the word. I don’t want them learning to read using books with that word in them.

2. A book review from Children's Literature said, "In this simple text, a young girl tries to convince a hatless, crabby tabby that he should don a chapeau of some sort. She extols the virtues of her rain hat, a hat to hide in and swim in, as well as all the people who wear hats such as the members of a marching band, sports teams, firefighters and construction workers. Throughout it all, the bad-tempered cat repeats that he has no interest in hats. To avoid further conflict, the little girl says that she will stop pushing hats and they can go sit quietly on the hill..."
3. This is a cute little book about a girl trying to get her cat friend to wear a hat. The cat is very stubborn and doesn't want to wear one but the girl continues to show the cat all different types of hats that he could wear if he wanted to. The author uses a lot of rhyming words and the illustrator does a nice job supporting the text with the simple, yet descriptive pictures. I would recommend this book for beginning readers in Kindergarten or first grade.

This book is a great as a read aloud. It is about a mouse trying to get a cat to wear hats. The mouse shows the cat different hats. The cats gets upset so the mouse promises no more hats but offers him shows instead.

The eddition I read was illustrated by Robert Gurney. The pictures looked like ink sketches. The pages were an aqua color and the drawings were in black. It was very simple yet really added to the story. The ending picture with the mouse sitting on the hill is my favorite picture. It makes you feel the emotions the mouse is feeling.

The writing is great. This is a great book to help children learn about rhymes. Since the mouse is persuading the cat to wear hats it can be used to talk about persuasive writing. There is a flow to the book which makes it easy to read it. The cat speaking creates interest. Beginner readers are able to read this book. There are a lot of sight words in the story as well.
